2018– The Decisive Year, by R.M.

…caused by this mindless leadership that will ultimately lead to societal breakdown and an “every man for himself” attitude. Unfortunately, while we prepare, others do not. The question for preppers becomes, can we realistically hold down the fort and protect what is ours in an onslaught of humanity bent on taking what we have at all costs? Those Who Prep Desire To Protect Families and Survive That’s not to say that those who do not prepare are evil or start out with malicious intent; most people simply have a desire to protect their families and survive. Ignorance or economic disadvantage may have prevented their putting things back. Even if we isolate ourselves at a so-called bug out location, can we honestly keep the hordes of humanity at bay, especially after they may get a whiff of a meal cooking at our place? It seems ludicrous to believe that one can…

Letter Re:Your Two Foot Bugout

…emergency evacuation in various cities and gave Phoenix a grade of “F”. But it’s actually worse than that. In a state where adequate grazing land is considered to be 80 acres to support one cow, there is no area that has the carrying capacity to support 4 million people. The author might make it to Lake Pleasant and up the old Phoenix to Prescott Toll Road into the Bradshaw Mountains. Or he could go up the old sheep trail along the Verde River through Bloody Basin. But either way, he’ll have to get a head start on the hordes of refugees heading north. An alternative plan would be to travel as far as possible by car or ATV, then use the stroller as a last result. With a Tsunami of desperate people breathing down your neck, escape is all about getting a quick start, ahead of the hordes. – K.L….

What if TEOTWAWKI Arrives as a Slow Gradual Boil?, by LongJim

…or some mysterious alien military force attacking the planet, or the simple world economic currency meltdown. These all propose, and assume, a sudden, rapid world-wide calamity rendering large cities places of mob rule, fire-ravaged, food-looted wastelands of desolation, forcing us who’ve prepared ourselves and our homes, into hunkering down to await hordes of refugees ascending upon our rural retreats like a Biblical plaque of  locusts. The local law enforcement authorities, and maybe the federal military and Homeland Security goons absent, or forcing us to live under an imposed  version “Martial Law”. What if the end of the world as we know it, arrives like the proverbial frog getting slowly boil to death in a pot of water-scenario?  What if we see the currency, over a period of weeks, months, or even years, slowly erode, inflate, deflate, or simply disappear, and be replaced once, twice, or three or more times, with…

Letter Re: Dealing With Livestock and Neighbors in The Crunch

…to kill and preserve, or trade them off, early in any economic collapse scenario. Second, we are remote enough (in People’s Republic of West Virginia), and sufficiently off beaten track, to have little concern about the hungry urban refugee hordes. There are however two real, local threats to our security. The first is neighbors, who are not well-prepared with supplies of their own for the long-term, but know or suspect that we are. We are deliberately on good terms with them all, but hunger trumps politeness for most folks. Some country people have moral codes they live by, but many that are raised on public school and “disability” and sixteen kinds of welfare, are more elastic. The second is, alas, the Sheriff. Ours currently is a former Marine, who was elected as perhaps most are in hopes of improving an office seen as corrupt and ineffective. Unfortunately he turns out…

Guest Article: Shooting Second Amendment Blanks- Part 1, by David M. Zuniga

…U.S. Constitution Article I, Section 8, Clause 15, We The People stipulate that “to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections, and repel Invasions” is the duty and the power of the Citizen Militia. No police forces, sheriffs, or standing army are stipulated in the law, but the Citizen Militia’s power and duty is law enforcement— especially enforcing the Constitution itself against organized crime in our legislatures! — riot control (against thugs in Antifa, neo-Nazi and Black Lives Matter hordes), and border security against the current invading hordes of Muslims and Latin American gang-bangers and welfare queens. The Basic Civics Dr. Vieira’s book Thirteen Words is the best explanation of the Second Amendment, but my point is, forget Amendment 2 “rights” until you first exercise our Article 1 power and duty! In the first three words of the Constitution, We The People stipulate that we’re the highest power in…

Seven Common TEOTWAWKI Misconceptions, by Brian T.

…uses.  Consider seriously the weight of your BOB, or perhaps plan on using a shopping cart, if any are left, or pulling a child’s wagon if you “need” all your stuff. Are you in shape enough to do that? How do you know? Put on that pack and give it a dry run, or excuse me, dry walk. Misconception number four:  Roving criminal hordes will come from the urban environment to your rural home or Bug Out Location (BOL).  Nope, these people do not play chess or even checkers; they do not plan ahead much at all.  Criminals, with few exceptions are lazy.  And many are on drugs.  Yes, a few will flee at the very beginning if they have a specific refuge in mind, the uncle with the farm, but most will not leave their familiar comfortable environment.  Even if they have an operational vehicle capable of the trip…

Welcome to the Promised Land, by Rod E.

…the store to replenish your supplies. Remember, you have no job so you have no money and even if you did, money is no longer worth the paper it is written on. There are no stores to go to and no one is going to sell you food or trade their food for your meager possessions. So get that out of your head. Gold coins, if you have any, might make good sinkers should you decide to go fishing but a pound of gold won’t buy a pound of rice because no one does that much fishing. Do you plan on hunting for food? So do a million other people and those heavily armed, hungry hordes with their guns, snares, spears and home made bows and arrows will be stumbling over each other in the woods. You are better than the competition so one shot, one kill and you miraculously…

Two Letter Re: Some Observations on Fortifications Versus Camouflaged Retreats

James: Just a quick observation about the wisdom of sheltering in a missile base or some other Cold War-era fortification. While Chris is correct that history demonstrates that fortifications can and will be breached by enemy forces with the resources and determination to maintain a well-conceived siege, I question whether after TEOTWAWKI the marauders most likely to be challenging such a retreat will have the resources to see a siege through to a successful conclusion. Presumably, the scarcity of resources is precisely what would make a fortress such an inviting target. Unlike the armies that successfully overran ancient fortifications, there is little hope of people armed only with conventional weapons successfully breaching the walls or blast doors of a structure designed to withstand anything but a direct hit from a sizable nuclear warhead. Additionally, the barbarian hordes in a post-collapse scenario will not have the luxury of sitting in place…

Five Letters Re: Escape From (Fill in Your City Here), 2009

…established long before the crisis hits, preferably far enough away that it’s just too difficult for city hordes to get to you. (A tip of my hat to Frank B – 15 miles from the nearest asphalt road.) You’ll still be in danger from unprepared locals and groups that do make it out to the frontier but the farther away and better prepared the better. Meanwhile, what about the millions of us who can’t relocated and are stuck in the cities? After 30 years of survival thinking related to earthquake preparedness I determined that the only effective strategy is to stay put and lay low. Don’t fire up your generator, blast your radio, and light up your house will the oil lamps you so carefully stashed for just the very event. In fact, leave all your survival equipment stashed for a couple of days until the first big wave of…

Letter Re: Advice on Protecting My Home from Gunfire

Jim, I am currently in the position of not being able to leave in the event of collapse or epidemic or whatever God may throw our way. I do, however, have the opportunity to build a “storage” area that may also be able to severe as a safe haven for my family when the hordes come out of Atlanta. Thanks to your blog we are way better prepared to survive than we were five months ago. However I feel we have virtually no gunfire protection in the mobile home we currently live in. I am going to be extremely irritated (assuming I survive) if, having prepared, it is taken from us by these hordes. So how do I build this storage area to protect us from gunfire? I have the fire protection pretty well down but I don’t know what type of building material would be best to use for…

You Might Just Be a Survivalist If…

…water hookup, and a Big Berkey to purify the water. – You have sapphire lights, survival whistle, and a Swiss Army knife on every family member’s key chain. – The people in line at Costco ask you if you run a store or restaurant. – You require a shovel to rotate all your preps properly. *- You no longer go the the doctor’s because you can either fix it yourself, make it at home, or know and understand the Physician’s Desk Reference better than he does, and can get the goods at the vets or pet store for much less moolah anyway. *- You know that a ‘GPS‘ has nothing to do with the economy. – You track your preps on a computer spreadsheet for easy reordering, but have hard copies in a 3-ring binder ‘just in case’. – You’ve thought about where the hordes can be stopped before entering…

Selecting a Retreat Location in Australia, by Mike McD.

…Pacific Highway between Sydney and Brisbane will become the Highway of Death as the Golden Horde heading north out of Sydney meet the Golden Horde fleeing south from Brisbane. Similarly the roads and regions between Sydney-Canberra-Melbourne will suffer from the effects of two or more Golden Hordes meeting. Outside these densely populated areas the country is vast and lacking in infrastructure. It is possible to travel 1000 miles (or more) in a straight line without once crossing a sealed road. A number of rough dirt tracks cross these empty regions however travelling these in anything less that a well prepared 4WD is foolhardy in the extreme. Every year deaths occur when the unprepared attempt to cross these regions. Water In the driest inhabited continent access to water is the number one consideration in selecting a retreat location. The average annual rainfall over 80% of the continent is below 24 inches…

Jim’s Quote of the Day:

“The monastic communities for survival will be located in high places, because in dangerous times it is heights that are easiest to defend. They enable the advance of hostile hordes to be seen from a distance and prepared for; and they favor the traditional counter- attacks that are helped by force of gravity — the rolling down of rocks and stones against assailants. Further, hilltops are naturally protected against floods; they are also very likely to be left alone by the large masses of people on the move, since migrant hordes are inclined to go after easy prey rather than undertake an arduous siege of doubtful outcome.” – Roberto Vacca, The Coming Dark Age…

Retreat Owner Profiles

…LR, 12 gauge (both #4 buckshot and some birdshot), .45 ACP, and plenty of 7.62x39mm (AK47). Get a lot of extra for barter. Store it all in military surplus ammo cans. Throw a freshly dried bag of silica gel in each can for moisture protection. Be sure to spread those ammo cans around to your various relatives houses so that you won’t get cleaned out in the event of a burglary. Even if the starving hordes from Nicaragua never arrive, there will be the perception that they might. That will make ballistic wampum a very valuable barter commodity. Construct hiding places for each of your guns. (False wall, or a wall cache fronted by solid bookcase. Get creative.) Install a Golden Rod dehumidifier in each gun storage space. Possibly some non-hybrid gardening seed if your neighbors don’t save their seed annually. (Ask!) Buy four Motorola FRS radios, plus extra NiMH…

Start Now, While You Can, Because You Can, by Old Bobbert

…never be enough in the future. If these are the sum total of your preps, you will not survive even the slightest tremor of chaos and hordes of hungry rabid thieves and killers. You will surely seek to desperately bargain with them, to appease them, and to bribe them. They will keep you talking while they surround you and sniper-kill your leaders. And then you will belong to them, you, your food, your supplies, all of it! They’ll take your tools and fuels, all of them and most especially your drugs and always your women. Even granny and your little girls will become hard-used throw away property. We can’t just shout, ”Look at me” or “Listen to me.” We can’t just announce that we are preppers and expect the bad guys to go away. No way. Writing prepper articles and sending email to our homespun literary works to friends and…
