My Continued Handgun Search – Part 1, by The Novice

I have been on a quest. It is the search for my ideal handgun. The ideal handgun for me may not be the same as the ideal handgun for you. If you have not yet found your ideal handgun, then perhaps the story of my search will give you some ideas and inspiration for your own search. If you have already found your ideal handgun, you may at least find this story to be entertaining.

Most modern handguns have an intrinsic accuracy that is more than sufficient to meet my needs. The problem is that I am not a human Ransom Rest. I can take two handguns with the exact same intrinsic accuracy and fire one of them much more accurately than the other. If I practice a lot and concentrate, the difference in my accuracy between the two guns may become smaller. But in a high stress situation, I will have a natural tendency to be more accurate with the gun that fits me the best.

The anticipated use for the handgun also impacts which one is ideal for me. For example, do I want to use it for competition, plinking, hunting, home defense, concealed carry, open carry, etc.? The gun I am looking for is for both plinking and home defense. For these uses, a larger frame and longer slide and barrel may give me better results than a smaller package.

New Survivalist Film: Radioflash

Blog reader William J. wrote to mention that a new post-EMP survivalist film called Radioflash will be released November 15th, 2019. It was made clear by the trailer that this film was not low budget. The lead actress, Brighton Sharbino, played Lizzie Samuels from 2013 to 2015 in The Walking Dead. Folks who live in the American Redoubt will probably recognize some of the locales around Spokane, Washington, Clark Fork, Idaho, and northwestern Montana. Most notably, I quickly recognized Kootenai Falls. I’ve previously dubbed this “best supporting background” scenery for The Revenant and The River Wild.

More About California’s 15 New Anti-Gun Laws

At The Federalist: Gov. Newsom Fiddles With Pointless Gun Restrictions While California Burns.   JWR’s Comments:  All of these laws are violations of the Second Amendment. The Red Flag laws also violate the 5th and 14th Amendments (the right to due process), the 4th Amendment (search and seizure), and the 6th Amendment (the right to have the representation of an attorney, the right to confront one’s accusers, and the right to cross-examine witnesses.) It is also noteworthy that the ban on the Del Mar gun show is a violation of the Bills of Attainder clause. (Article 1, Section 10, Clause 1). Our federal and state government cannot pass laws singling out just one person or one company for deprivation of property or livelihood. Yet this is precisely what that new law does, because the Del Mar gun show was operated for many years by just one gun show promoter. Shame on Governor Newsom and his minions!

“Proudly Overbuilt In The USA!” That’s what is written on every Zero Tolerance product box that leaves their factory.

A longtime friend, and fellow gun writer, once told me that, you have to catch the reader’s attention in your first couple of sentences or first paragraph of an article, or the readers won’t read any further. I certainly hope I caught your attention. I know a lot of our readers are like me, they love Zero Tolerance (ZT) knives, for several reasons, one is that they are built in the USA, right here in my home state of Oregon. Secondly, when you unbox a ZT knife, and inspect it, you will find no flaws in the manufacture and design of the knife —ZT truly means “zero tolerance” and they won’t put up with anything but perfection in all their products. I’ve had a lot of ZT knives go through my hands and have yet to find any flaws or imperfections in any of their products.

I won’t bore our readers with this, because I’ve mentioned it before, but I still do some knife designing, and had many of those knives built by custom knife makers. And, the ZT line is the equal to the best knives that many custom knife makers turn out! Today, many custom knife makers make use of modern equipment, like CNC machines to mill out their knife blades, and even the handle scales. For a time, we called those knives “mid-tech”. That meant: not quite hand made, but not fully machine made, either. I’ve toured the Kershaw Knives factory — where ZT knives are made — a division of KAI Corporation, and have watched knives being produced from the knife blanks, to the CNC machines, to the assembly and final fit, plus the sharpening of the blades, its quite the process to watch.

Zero Tolerance knives are always in great demand. Quite often, I have to wait for a newly-released folder to get into my hands, because they get sold out just that fast. I don’t mind waiting in the least, either. It is always a welcome sight when I know UPS is bringing me something from ZT. And, I’m never disappointed, when I unbox a new design. Many readers ask me to review higher-end knives, and I do my best to accompany those requests, but there are only so many knives that fall into this category. Recipe of the Week: Avalanche Lily’s Fried Potato Apple ‘n Onion

Here is a new variation of Almanzo Wilder’s favorite side-dish of fried Apples ‘n Onions which is great for fall breakfasts.  Almanzo Wilder is the husband of Laura Ingalls Wilder who wrote the Little House on the Prairie series.  In the book “Farmer Boy”  Laura mentions how much Almanzo loved Fried Apples ‘n Onions.

This week, for breakfast I started to fry up potatoes and onions and thought of Almanzo’s Fried Apples and Onions and thought, “Why not add Apples?”  I had never tried Fried Apples and Onions. So I did.  It was a hit with the family, and very yummy.  So, here is the recipe:

Ingredients
  • 8 medium potatoes peeled and cut to 1/2″ cubes
  • 3 large apples peeled and cut to 1/2″ cubes or slices
  • 3 medium onions, diced
  • Cooking oil (I prefer olive oil)
  • Himalayan Salt (to taste)
Directions
  1. Heat a large fry pan and coat with oil.
  2. Brown the desired quantity of chopped onion
  3. Pour in the potatoes and apples, simultaneously
  4. Cook, stirring often, until the potatoes and apples are soft and slightly browned.

SERVING

Serve with any other breakfast dishes.

STORAGE

Best is eaten immediately, while still hot. Will not store well regrigerated, especially if the potatoes were pre-cooked.

Another from Wolf Street: Why Banks Didn’t Lend to the Repo Market When Rates Blew Out: JPMorgan CEO Dimon. A pericope:

“But at the end of 2018, JPMorgan “had more cash than we needed for regulatory requirements,” Dimon told analysts today (transcript of the earnings call via Seeking Alpha). So as “repo rates went up,” JPMorgan withdrew cash from “the checking account which paid IOER” and lent it to the repo market. “Obviously makes sense, you make more money.”

But this year in mid-September, JPMorgan’s cash account at the Fed fluctuated between $120 billion and $60 billion “during the course of the day,” he said and added:

“That cash, we believe, is required under resolution and recovery and liquidity stress testing. And therefore, we could not redeploy it into the repo market, which we would’ve been happy to do. And I think it’s up to the regulators to decide if they want to recalibrate the kind of liquidity they expect us to keep in that account.”

He is blaming the regulators. But it shows that JPMorgan’s cash on deposit at the Fed had been drawn down to the range of $120 billion to $50 billion, when a year ago it was much higher.”

Today is the birthday of shootist Ed McGivern (born 1874, died December 12, 1957.) He was born in Nebraska, but was a long-time resident of Butte, Montana. His book Fast and Fancy Revolver Shooting is fascinating reading.

October 20th is also the birthday of actor Viggo Mortensen (born 1958.) He lives somewhere in the American Redoubt. On his ranch is his horse-for-life “TJ”–one of the five paint horses used in the filming of the movie Hidalgo. Most SurvivalBlog readers probably know him best for his starring role in The Road.

Here’s How The New U.S.-China Trade Talks May End, by Brandon Smith

With the U.S. and China in the midst of a new round of high level trade talks, this Thursday marks 22 months since tariffs were launched and the trade war began. Far from being “easy to win”, the trade war has lasted far longer than most analysts in the mainstream and alternative media predicted. In past articles, I have warned that the trade war itself is probably not meant to be won at all; rather, it is a massive distraction and a convenient scapegoat as global banks set the implosion of the Everything Bubble in motion. I continue to stand by this assessment, which is why I think it is unlikely that the current talks with China will accomplish much of anything.

This conclusion runs in stark contrast to all the hype we heard in the investment community in September. The way stock markets levitated, one would have thought a deal was assured. Never underestimate the power of blind optimism, I suppose. I believe there are a very limited number of end games to the meeting, none of which will result in an actual “deal”. However, it’s important to understand the dynamics at play here.

First and foremost, if we are to approach the trade war from a mere surface examination, there is really no incentive for China to capitulate to Trump’s demands. There is only one year left until the 2020 elections, and while both economies are certainly seeing a downward plunge, China is hardly crippled by tariffs on exports to the U.S. China can simply bide its time, waiting to see how the U.S. election unfolds. The more unstable the U.S. economy is in 2020, the less likely it will be that Trump will win a second term. Trump has tied himself so completely to the performance of the economy and stock markets that whatever happens, he now owns the end result.

The U.S. only accounts for 18% of total Chinese exports, which is not a small amount to be sure, but nowhere near enough leverage to push China into long-term concessions. China has already begun replacing U.S. agricultural products by turning to alternative markets in countries like Brazil and Mexico. The meme six months ago among trade war cheerleaders was that “the Chinese people would be starving within months without U.S. soy and pork”, and the Chinese government would “have a revolution on its hands.” I hope these people now see how ridiculous this assertion is. Relocate soon, before you are targeted by a busybody neighbor and then tried by the New Star Chamber, in absentia!  Face it, folks: California is a lost cause. The Democrats now solidly hold the State Assembly, the State Senate, and the Governor’s Mansion, with no end in sight. They have an entrenched Democrat constituency. Not content with just honoring the memory of Cesar Chavez, California is now on the path to going Full Hugo Chavez. This is the same state that now requires background checks for ammo sales, and that will soon mandate that only licensed dealers can sell gun parts. They also just instituted putting illegal aliens on State Boards. California is now a state ruled by rabid collectivists. This is nothing short of a descent into socialist insanity. Vote with your feet. Flee!
