Letter: Remote Versus Truly Remote Rural Retreats

Dear Editor:I’ve been reading SurvivalBlog for a few weeks now, and while I admit that isn’t remotely enough time to wade through all the data present, I’m an old school (former) U.S. Marine that has long had a survialist mindset; I see one particular issue that jumps out at me. The standard advice, for looking for a bugout location or retreat, whether inside or outside of the ‘Redoubt’ seems to be this… 1) Find a plot of 20 acres or more that is, (2) off the beaten path BUT (3) has a well established road access, (4) with a good …

News From The American Redoubt:

The Economist (a leftist magazine and web site) did a pretty decent writeup on the American Redoubt featuring JWR. There are a few back-handed compliments, but overall it’s a good article. On the other hand, the comments (367, at last count) are pretty amusing and some are outrageously ill-informed. FYI: No, Idaho is not a “Blue” state. No, JWR has not undergone heart surgery. He is very healthy and active. While not a farmer, he is a rancher, and he most definitely does live inside the American Redoubt. He also coined the term “American Redoubt” in 2011–not “more than 10 …

How Do You Find A Good Survival Retreat Property?, by D.R. in TN

With global economic instability rising and personal security issues taking center stage in the U.S., consumer demand is increasing for remote properties that offer security and the ability to be self-contained. This could include providing your own electric power, drinking water, food, and personal protection. In other words, it’s the ability to live independently, in a self-sufficient manner, with renewable resources far from urban chaos.  Are you looking for a remote survival property? Think very seriously about it. We did, and what follows is a checklist of considerations for finding a survival retreat. It is the culmination of a four-year …

Letter Re: Moving to Alaska

Hugh, This is just another opinion, but it may help. I moved to Alaska when I was young. I lived there for 28 years. It was a glorious time. Alaska is a beautiful place. It is a great place for young people who have lots of energy and are unafraid of work, seasons, and learning new things. I learned to hunt, to fish, to reload ammunition, to cut my own meat, and I got married. We now live in the Redoubt. There are lots of former Alaskans here. Why did we move? First, Alaska becomes more difficult to deal with …

Letter Re: Buying and Selling Rural Land

Hugh, If you have narrowed down your list to one or two properties, consider chartering an aircraft to do a visual inspection. It might cost you $300-$500 but it allows additional validation of a significant investment. Even at 1,000 feet above ground level (AGL in pilot speak) you can quickly take some pictures, makes some notes, and assess things such as the terrain, trees or vegetation, and even a potential risk if say a neighbor has something on their property that could ultimately contaminate your water supply. I know some readers will scream “my privacy!”. Here in the USA there …

Letter Re: Moving to Alaska

Hugh, When I saw the title “Moving to Alaska”, I thought to myself “WHY?” Although my wife and I have lived in Los Anchorage for over 40 years, yes, it’s getting very blue here. I must echo everything Bryan B. has said and more. About two years ago my wife and I saw the trend coming and worked and paid off our home, and our rental is almost paid off. If needed, it will be our BOL due to its size. We also partially closed our business. We get two ships a week to Anchorage; 85% of our groceries come …

Letter Re: Moving to Alaska

HJL, A recent contributor had a great letter about their move to rural Alaska. I wish them the best of luck. Living in rural Alaska myself, though off the road system, I can only hope they fair well here. My family are in the process of doing the reverse move from Alaska to the Redoubt. Interestingly enough, I had a letter posted on Survivalblog about eight years ago about my move from the city to rural off-road system Alaska. Alaska has some distinct advantages, mainly the lack of people outside cities and available subsistence in some areas. But everything else …
