“Zero Tolerance” is a bold name for any company. This is a knife company is actually a division of famed Kershaw Knives. Today we’re looking at their ZT0393 model folder.

I don’t care who you are, or what you make, when you name your company “Zero Tolerance” the consumers expect nothing less than perfection in your products – all your products. That’s a tough claim to live up to. However, when we’re talking about knives, it is a very bold step to imply that your products are made to perfection, and without flaw.

Many years ago, I used to collect – and design – custom knives. I’m no knife maker. I tried my hand at it, and its tough drawing a straight line with a ruler. However, I can make my thoughts come out on a piece of paper, where a knife company or custom knife maker can bring my ideas to fruition. I sold off all my custom knives many years ago, even the ones I designed and had made for me but several custom knife makers. Of course, I regret letting those knives go, that I designed.

Today, many custom knife makers make use of CNC machines and other equipment to manufacture their knives – just like the big name knife companies do. In the past, custom knife makers did most of their work free-hand on custom knives. And, many of those knives had some small flaws or defects – you had to look closely to spot them, though. Yet, it didn’t distract from the fact that, your knife was one of a kind, if was made by a custom knife maker. One thing that bothered me back in the day, was that, many knife makers simply couldn’t put a halfway decent edge on their knives – how very odd that was. You paid $600 for a custom knife, and when you got it, it had a tough time slicing through a piece of paper. I guess a lot of people simply collected custom knives, and never used them. Not me!

Recipe of the Week: Gomma’s Mushroom Chicken in Sherry

This was an old a Rawles family favorite.

Ingredients
  • 4 Large Chicken Breasts, skinless (or substitute 6 small skinless breasts.)
  • 1 Can Cream of Mushroom Soup
  • 1 C Sour Cream
  • 1/2 C Cooking Sherry
  • 8 Ounces Sliced Mushrooms
  • Paprika, to taste.
Directions
  • Put Chicken in a large, lightly-greased rectangular baking dish.
  • Mix together the soup, sour cream, mushrooms and sherry, in a large bowl. Then pour over the chicken breasts. Sprinkle with paprika.
  • Bake uncovered at 375 F for 1 hour to 1-1/2 hours, until juices run clear.
Notes and Serving Suggestions

I usually serve this over a bed of steamed rice. Typically, we also serve it with a steamed vegetable side dish.

A Review of The Bunker: Surviving an Economic Collapse by Wayne Bosak

MORE REALISTIC THAN MOST

Finally, an apocalyptic book that shows a truer picture of human nature than any other that I’ve read. My belief is that the world is full of good people, and not everyone with a can of Mountain House is a bloodthirsty gunslinger.

In the novel The Bunker: Surviving an Economic Collapse, by Wayne Bosak, the main characters are, of course, trying to get home. They encounter many normal people who give them shelter and aid. Sure, there are the usual gangs, looters, and murderers who get put down. But rural people are correctly portrayed, at least where I live, as open and generous.

I like end-of-the-world books, but often most other ones  are unreadable due to poor editing. While only finding a few errors in this one, it was not to the point of being distracting.

Camouflaging Techniques, by Concealed Prepper – Part 2

Vehicles

Vehicles are a little more difficult to camouflage. The easiest way to get at least some camouflage on your vehicle is just to repaint it a flat earth tone. If you want to go more serious than that you will need some Hessian poles. These are long poles that stick in the ground and are draped with camouflage netting. They are designed to break up the distinctive outline of a vehicle. If you have any large length of scrap metal or smooth branches around , you can use them  or “spreaders” at the ends of the Hessain poles. If your vehicle is small enough–such as a traditional “ride astride” ATV–then you may use some old clothes hanger T-bars fro spreaders. The netting doesn’t have to be as covered as heavily as your ghillie suit is. Just enough to break up the vehicle’s outline. Caution: Don’t merely drape the netting over the vehicle. Otherwise the shape of the vehicle will still remain.

Sniper Hides and Foxholes

Sniper hides are similar to a foxhole, but generally they aren’t deep in the ground, so they don’t provide much ballistic or indirect fire protection. You can use many of the same rules for these as you do a foxhole. To construct a sniper hide, you will need some sturdy, natural vegetation. You will be building this sniper hide in a dense wooded or brushy spot. (But not too dense!)

Avalanche Lily Reports

Dear Readers,
This week Jim was still traveling, to help an ailing relative. His only prepping this week was helping that family stock up. Jim says: “Costco rocks!” But we try to only buy American-made goods there.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the weather, this week has been cold and very rainy with only a few breaks in the weather, here and there.  It was a week of doctor appointments for the girls, and wrapping up classes and studying for exams. So therefore, not too much prepping occurred. No exercise for any of us, or our horses, either, sadly. I did get the asparagus planted, but not the raspberries.  I was able to spread some rotted-down cow manure on a section of garden that didn’t receive it last fall.  And I did do some stocking up shopping while in the towns.  One stop was at Costco for paper items, laundry soap, fresh fruit, and veggies.  I bought five bags of mixed sweet peppers to chop up and freeze. I also bought a bag of large onions.

In the greenhouse the broccoli and cabbage are already sprouting.

Camouflaging Techniques, by Concealed Prepper – Part 1

When times get bad, and you feel unprotected and exposed, you will want to have camouflage to keep you and your family safe. For some people that may mean just a simple set of BDUs or even just the first camo clothing you see at Walmart. However, that may not be enough. There is a lot more to camouflage and concealment than just these.

Get proper camouflage: you will want some proper mil spec BDUs. These are sturdy and will come in handy for making ghillie suits, holding extra supplies, and recognizing your fellow group members. It is not necessary to get matching camo patterns for your family, but it helps. Be careful of going “Camo Crazy” where you only get camo clothes–even underwear.

Make Your Ghillie Suits

If you get good at concealment, a ghillie suit helps a lot. They take a notoriously long time to make. You may buy ghillie suits, but they will either be very expensive (several hundred USDs) or of low quality. I recommend making your own. You will need a sewing machine or some very strong glue and BDUs (or flat earth tone garments) in a size slightly bigger than you. Including a boonie hat. Even better is to start with a set of oversize military surplus olive drab overalls. They hold on to you very well and in my opinion, are more comfortable. You will also need some tough fish netting or similar material. Try to get the netting holes more than 1 cm in diameter. Find a source for a lot of jute thread or burlap that is in the same tone of your local environment. You may end up using many rolls or just a few depending on how thick you want your jute. Sew or glue on the netting to the BDUs; this will take a long time, but don’t worry if the netting is messy or not straight. Then tie on the jute thread, you should have a large brownish, greenish lump now. Then for a final touch, if you want, drag it around in the dirt a bit. (Be careful not to damage it too much). It will be hot, heavy, and smelly. But it may save your life.
