The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “JWR”. Our goal is to educate our readers, to help them to recognize emerging threats and to be better prepared for both disasters and negative societal trends. You can’t mitigate a risk if you haven’t first identified a risk. Today, we look at riots and their sociopolitical fallout.

Manhattan’s 5th Avenue Stores Boarded Up

SurvivalBlog’s Editor-At-Large Michael Z. Williamson mentioned this television news reports, showing this sign of the times: Luxury Stores Board Up Along Manhattan’s 5th Avenue

Disarming Elmer T. Fudd

Mike Williamson also sent this news of modern Politically Correct absurdity:  Looney Tunes: HBO Max Series Bans Elmer Fudd’s Rifle. Yosemite Sam will also be disarmed. So it seems that back in the early 1980s Hank Williams saw it all coming, when he wrote the lyrics to The Coalition to Ban Coalitions.

No Legal Justification For Lockdown

Reader D.S.V. sent the link to this piece by Bill Sardi: Americans Have Been Duped: No Legal Justification For Lockdown. Here is a brief excerpt:

“Did the COVID-19 coronavirus “epidemic” ever pose such a threat to human life that the entire population of the world needed to be locked down and quarantined?  Even in malnourished populations in 3rd world countries that are expected to have weak immunity, there are far fewer COVID-19 coronavirus-related deaths than in the U.S., which suggests treatment-related deaths or over-reporting.”Continue reading“The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods”

The Editors’ Quote of the Day:

“The core elements of debt, civic decay, and global disorder are now coalescing into a perfect storm of consequences for a nation and world built upon a teetering edifice of unpayable debt, unfulfilled promises, the unbridled greed of a blood thirsty ruling class, and the unbelievable delusions of people who think a world built upon borrowing to consume is sustainable.

The dichotomy between what is happening in the real world and what is happening in the world of the financiers will lead to violent upheaval on a timeline not anticipated by the ruling class. There is a good reason gun stores were overwhelmed with business at the outset of this over-hyped flu pandemic. As Strauss and Howe pointed out twenty three years ago, trust in the government, central bankers, the corporate media, and “experts” is disintegrating rapidly. The anger and disillusionment grows by the day and pockets of resistance are propagating throughout the country.” – Jim Quinn, in his The Burning Platform blog

Preparedness Notes for Wednesday — June 10, 2020

Some Observations on Recent Events: This whole kneeling thing (most recently in the Capitol rotunda) is getting over-played. In my estimation kneeling positions are apropos only for praying, proposing marriage, or for shooting. I am happy to extend a hand of friendship anyone of any skin tone, or any religion, if they show mutual respect for law and reason. And I would give my life, fighting for the rights of others to assemble publicly, to speak out, and to seek redress for grievances. That is where I draw the line: Protesting?: Yes. Looting?: No.

I submit only to Lord Jesus (Yeshua.) I do not worship “Diversity.”  And I certainly don’t grovel and beg forgiveness for the crime of enslavement that I didn’t commit. (Nor did my parents, grandparents, or even my great-grandparents.) All that I ask is that we unite as rational Americans of all skin tones and agree to respect each others lives, property, liberty, and other fundamental rights. I have no patience for someone who irrationally claims that there are “seven genders”, or someone who “identifies” as a baby, or someone who claims that they are presently oppressed because their great-great-great grandparents were enslaved. Neither can I agree with someone who says that the government has a right to forcibly take 28% of what I’ve earned from my wallet, and redistribute it to someone who refuses to work. That is not charity. That is strong-armed robbery, under fictitious, fabricated law. I also refuse to go along with the fiction that a human fetus in the womb is a “nonviable tissue mass.” Lastly, I refuse to be disarmed, just because a few others (in fact, only around 1%) misuse firearms. That is like forcing someone to be castrated because their neighbor committed a rape. Don’t expect me to kowtow to any of this patently irrational nonsense. I am a rational man and a free man, and I will die that way. – JWR

Synthetic and Natural Fibers, by Madison B.

Modern commercially-produced clothing probably makes up the vast majority of your wardrobe. Commercially-produced clothing has many advantages: It is inexpensive, it is widely available, and it comes in millions of different colors and styles. It is also available in a myriad of textures and materials. Many of these materials promise to perform at levels that would only be found in a Sci-Fi novel twenty years ago. Moisture-wicking, antimicrobial, ripstop fabric pervades sportswear and workwear alike. The modern performance fabric also has a sleek clean look that promises ease of movement and impenetrable protection. For all of the benefits these fabrics offer, they have one major downfall: sustainability.

I know what you’re thinking, “Oh here we go: Another bleeding-heart liberal complaining about the environment.” While synthetic fabrics are extremely damaging to the atmosphere and ocean and cotton is a major contributor to water shortages around the world, I’m not actually talking about environmental sustainability. I am talking about the ability to produce, procure, maintain, and use these fabrics in a SHTF situation.

Take a look at what you’re wearing now. Check the tags on all of your gear. If you look at the fiber content for the majority of the fabrics that surround you, you will notice one thing. Almost everything is a synthetic fiber or a synthetic blend. Synthetic fibers include Polyester, Nylon, Spandex, Lycra, Acrylic, Kevlar, Olefin, Acetate, and Zylon among others. All synthetic fibers are made of plastic. Fibers like Rayon, Lyocel, Tencel, and Cellulose Acetate are considered pseudosynthetic and are made of plant cellulose. Both synthetic and pseudosynthetic fibers require intensive laboratory procedures and equipment to manufacture and are nigh on impossible to produce at home.

Synthetic fiber production also relies on refined petroleum. If for any reason the supply chains of petroleum or other chemicals were to be compromised, the manufacture of synthetic and pseudosynthetic fibers would come to a standstill. Without fiber production, the manufacture of clothing, home goods, outdoor goods, and other industries would grind to a halt. Even an oil embargo could cause the cost of synthetic fiber production to rise to inaccessible levels.Continue reading“Synthetic and Natural Fibers, by Madison B.”

Preparedness Notes for Tuesday — June 9, 2020

On June 9, 1940 Norway surrendered to the invading German army, during World War II. The citizenry was then quickly disarmed by the Nazis, so resistance was limited. (The invaders had access to the Norwegian police gun registration lists.) To limit reprisals by the Germans, King Hakkon the 7th ordered that only  Norwegian troops operating from offshore should overtly resist the Nazis.  The “H7” logo became the ubiquitous symbol of resistance in occupied Norway.

We’re Back Online!  SurvivalBlog was unavailable for several hours yesterday afternoon and evening (June  8, 2020) due to a server migration—from one server rack to another, in Holland. We had announced that for two days in advance, but apparently a lot of readers missed those announcements. That resulted in a few panicky e-mails.

No worries, folks. All is well now.

Open or Concealed: Our Freedom to Choose

I often hear comments from SurvivalBlog readers with conflicting views on concealed carry versus open carry of firearms.  Some claim that concealed carry is “the only way to carry” and that carrying openly makes you a target. But others say that open carry acts as a visible deterrent to crime.  My position is that both are apropos at different places and at different times.  So I believe that you should both train and acquire the right holsters and slings, to be ready for either, as the situation arises. In recent weeks, open carry whilst wearing a Hawaiian shirt has become popular. The shirt serves as a quick identifier, to differentiate open carriers from any black-shirted Antifa types.

It is noteworthy that armed citizens have showed up, at many Black Lives Matter protests, just to make sure that they don’t devolve into rioting, arson, and looting. This is confirmation that an armed society is indeed a polite society. I commend the folks who have done so. Just be sure to reassure the protestors: “We aren’t here to intimidate you. We are here to protect you, and your freedom to speak out.”

We must remember that the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (RKBA) pre-dates the Constitution.  The Constitution’s declaration of that right is not granting that right. It merely assures that this antecedent right will continue to be protected. And the Constitution makes no differentiation between bearing arms openly, or concealed, on foot, or horseback, in a private conveyance, or in a public conveyance, in the confines of a town, or out in the hinterlands, nor does it delimit that right to  private property versus out in public. It implies that all are protected, because that was clearly the intent of the Founding Fathers.

Assuring Continuity

One thing that is not apparent to many observers and even news reporters is the importance of an uninterrupted continuity of the RKBA, with no strings attached. This means circumstances, and “emergencies”, or simply lack of popularity cannot be used as excuses to deny a right. Nor can any “license”  or “permit” be added.  I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: Whenever someone must buy a license or pay a fee to exercise a right, then it is something less than a right. It is in fact a mere privilege, subject to the whim of petty bureaucrats. Fundamental rights are not abstract tokens that are given or sold by other men. They are in fact primary liberties bestowed upon us by God, our maker. Rights are not substantially secured by asking, “Mother may I?” of any government agency. Rights are more properly demanded or boldly seized and then conspicuously exercised regularly. This secures the liberties that have legitimately belonged to us since birth. If need be, lost rights can and must be restored through proscriptive use. If you live in a land where your rights have been marginalized into privileges, then it is either time to change your government, or to change your address. Much like a muscle that atrophies with disuse, any right that goes unexercised for many years devolves into a privilege, and eventually can even be redefined as a crime.

Do It Correctly

With rights come responsibilities. So it is important that  If you choose to exercise your RKBA, that you do so in a responsible way that carries the right message, and that keeps your gun in responsible hands. If are going to carry concealed, then keep you gun fully concealed. If the outline of your pistol is “printing” through your clothes, then you might as well have a flashing sign that says “Concealed Carrier!”

If you are going to carry openly, then you need to be vigilant about controlling your weapon. If you get tackled and some thug takes your gun, then you are in part to blame. Maintaining control means always sitting with your back to a wall, and never dropping below Condition Yellow.

If you are going to carry for part of a trip into town, then be prepared to secure your weapon if you leave it in a vehicle. Unfortunately congress enacted a wicked law that prevents any carry of post-1898 firearms or any ammunition inside of a U.S. Post Office. This is beyond bothersome. It means both parking on the street (rather than inside a post office parking lot), and locking up your gun in your vehicle before entering a post offioce. In a high crime area that necessitates buying one or two vehicle pistol lock boxes.

Please show courtesy to others, by putting them at ease. You should carry with an air of casualness and confidence. If some Special Snowflake feels intimidated by the mere sight of you being armed, then you’ve lost a point in the Public Relations War. If anyone complains, then be quick to remind them: “Your freedom of speech, including your freedom to say what you just said, is guaranteed by our right to keep and bear arms. The Second Amendment is the insurance policy for the First Amendment.”

I must underscore the fact that I am an advocate of both the Second and First Amendments. That is why I originated CFAPA.org, to provide press credentials to any adult citizen who desires them. So I recognize the right to carry a gun, and a camera. And whenever I’m covering an event as a journalist, I reserve the right to also be armed.  Just because I’m exercising my First Amendment right doesn’t mean that I have to leave my Second Amendment at home, or locked up in my car.Continue reading“Open or Concealed: Our Freedom to Choose”

Preparedness Notes for Monday — June 8, 2020

On June 8th, 1776, Canadian Governor Sir Guy Carleton defeated American Patriot forces under John Sullivan. After taking heavy losses and the loss of General Richard Montgomery at Quebec, the Patriots were pursued by Governor Carleton. Halfway between Quebec and Montreal, at the Trois-Rivieres, the Patriots turned to fight. The Redcoats and German mercenaries killed 25, wounded 140, and captured 236, but Carleton allowed the rest of the 2,500-man force to complete their retreat. This battle changed the priorities of the Patriots, and Colonel Benedict Arnold wrote, “Let us quit and secure our own country before it is too late.”

We are scheduled to complete our server migration to a new rack, this evening. This sever is at our off-shore server site, in Holland. So if you notice that SurvivalBlog is briefly unavailable, don’t panic!  Rest assured that we aren’t having Vogon Problems, or DDoS Hack Problems, or Black Helicopter Problems.

A reminder: We need your article!  Round 89 of the SurvivalBlog non-fiction writing contest ends on July 31st, so get busy writing and e-mail us your entry. Remember that there is a 1,500-word minimum, and that articles on practical “how to” skills for survival have an advantage in the judging.

And a brief observation: Have you noticed that the liberals who are now screaming: “De-fund the police departments!” are the same people who want to enact laws to disarm the citizenry?  Their illogic is just stupendous.  Perhaps someday it will get through their thick skulls that there is indeed a legitimate and inherent right of The People to keep and bear arms.

Beretta 92FS Stainless, by Pat Cascio

In 1985, the US military adopted a new handgun for our warriors, and right from the beginning, and even through today, the Beretta Model 92FS (M9/M9A1) continues to get criticism from all sides, for any number or real or imagined reasons. I won’t go into all the details, on this, you can find article after article about the Beretta 92FS on the Internet – some people simply have nothing better to do with their lives, other than to complain about things – anything – based on their wild imagination. The number one complaint was, and still is, we switched from the 1911 .45 ACP handgun, to the Beretta Model 92 FS that “only” fires the “puny” 9mm round. There is a little bit of truth to the fact that, the .45 ACP with FMJ ammo is a better stopper, compared to the 9mm FMJ round. However, it still comes down to proper shot placement. For years, I swore by the .45 ACP in a 1911 as the do all round for self-defense. However, with better bullet designs now available, the FBI says the .45 ACP, .40 S&W and 9mm rounds are all just about identical when it comes to stopping power. Many police departments in the USA were sold on the .40 S&W, however many are now switching back to the 9mm.

Most militaries in the free-world issue handguns chambered in 9mm, so the US military isn’t going to switch back to the .45 ACP anytime soon. Plus, as a member of NATO, we are required to use the 9mm round – simple as that – cry all you like about it, but we’re not changing to a different handgun caliber anytime soon.

There was some controversy about the slide cracking and coming apart on the Beretta M9 early on. Yes, it’s true, but most people weren’t interested in hearing the facts. The matter is, those guns were firing some very hot ammo, and sooner or later, any 9mm handgun is going to break. The ammo being used in those guns were SMG rounds – they were hotter than +P rounds by quite a bit, and the early M9 handguns couldn’t handle the high pressures being generated. This was through no fault of Beretta, it was the ammo. However, to settle the matter, Beretta added a huge “button safety” in the frame of the gun, that wouldn’t allow the slide to fly into the face of the user, if the slide broke. Beretta stayed on top of this and still do.Continue reading“Beretta 92FS Stainless, by Pat Cascio”

Recipe of the Week: Potato Pancakes

The following Potato Pancakes recipe is from The New Butterick Cook Book, by Flora Rose, co-head of the School of Home Economics at Cornell University. It was published in 1924. A professional scan of that 724-page out-of-copyright book will be one of the bonus items in the next edition of the waterproof SurvivalBlog Archive USB stick. This 15th Anniversary Edition USB stick should be available for sale in the third week of January, 2021.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups grated potato
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • Milk
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Onion Juice
Directions

Scrub and pare the potatoes and grate them into cold water to keep them from discoloring. Drain well and to every two cups of potato allow one beaten egg, two tablespoons of flour and sufficient milk to make a stiff batter. Season with salt, pepper and onion-juice [to taste]. Cook in a frying-pan with hot fat to the depth of about one-half inch. A large spoonful of batter makes a good-sized cake. Cook until well brown and crisp.

SERVING

Serve as a vegetable with meat and gravy. Especially good with a stew.

Do you have a favorite recipe that would be of interest to SurvivalBlog readers? In this weekly recipe column we place emphasis on recipes that use long term storage foods, recipes for wild game, dutch oven and slow cooker recipes, and any that use home garden produce. If you have any favorite recipes, then please send them via e-mail. Thanks!
