To Shoot or Not to Shoot?, by Mr. White

…and really amps up the situation. Communicating also involves communicating with family or other members of your group. Family members need to learn to respond to simple commands that you may give in these moments. A simple  command like, “Bug out” should be all they need to hear. They should run, with or without you, without any questions. Communicating with other group members to alert everyone to something you see, or to obtain backup, is also very important. The bottom line is if you are not shooting, move and communicate. The preceding information has greatly assisted me in making these very critical and important decisions numerous times. I hope you find it useful. By all means if a bad man threatens your life, and you have the means, snatch his soul. But lets not let our trigger fingers get in front of our good sense. Be safe, and God bless….

My Two Cents, by G.H.

…recommendation is the military “Jerry” cans. Usually things were made better years ago. However, with military “Jerry” cans, unless you already have the metal ones, look at the Scepter plastic 20 liter/5 gallon plastic cans. The first time you pour out 5 gallons of kerosene, you will wonder how you ever got along without them! Ebay is the place to acquire used Scepter cans. You can legally own the Canadian versions but not the ones marked as U.S. military. Note: Scepter is a Canadian company, so they all come from Canada anyway! Look here for Scepter accessories: http://www.jagmte.com/index.php?route=common/home. These are two websites with instructions for making a DIY high-flow pour spout: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/off-roading-trails/224756-scepter-jerry-can-alternate-spout.html and http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/56733-2-quot-to-1-quot-PVC-fitting-for-Scepter-Military-Fuel-Container-Spout. I am fussy about my kerosene. You can use K1 from “locked” pumps. However, if you can find it, Canadian #1 Stove Oil is the best due to its 15ppm sulfur content. I then add .5…

Notes from HJL:

…we can now get it in just a few weeks. What if the county doesn’t like the gear that is under contract with that bidder? No problem. Most states have a wide base of contracts. One large fire company may prefer gear from Company A and another may prefer gear from Company B. It’s a pretty good bet that both companies have contracts with the state. In fact, the state may pursue contracts with both companies because they know the individual fire departments may prefer different gear. If relatively similar contracts are procured between both companies, it saves the taxpayer money and the fire departments get their equipment easily and quickly. On paper, it looks like the state is getting ready to purchase 2000 sets of gear, but the reality is that only the gear necessary for the job will get purchased over the course of a year. This same…

Winter Outdoor Survival Lessons Learned, by Jim N.

…focus was to not die. Curled up comfortably in my emergency blanket with my face towards my fire and my back to a large log serving as a heat reflector, I realized that without the proper skills and some basic gear the situation good have been deadly.  The sounds of a distant wolf howl in the night reminded me of the thin veneer between polite society and the wild, were man is reduced to the basic necessities of survival; food, fire, and shelter.  In my experience, most people fail to realize how delicate the balance of our society is and how quickly they can be thrust into a situation where the main focus is survival.      Not dying has frequently been a priority of mine while fighting in Iraq as an Infantry team leader and designated long range marksman, followed by a career in law enforcement in western Montana.  My…

Many states will require you to complete a basic pistol shooting class before you can obtain your CCP. This class is taught by instructors certified by the National Rifle Association. To locate a class nearest you visit www.nrainstructors.org . Here you can find information on a plethora of courses offered by the NRA. Even if you don’t plan on obtaining a CCP, it is still beneficial to attend one of these courses. I recommend it for both beginners and also veterans who haven’t completed the course. Many veteran shooters do not use proper shooting techniques such as breathing and stance that could improve their precision and accuracy. The course normally ranges in price from about $50-$150 and requires about 50-100…

The J-Pole and Other VHF/UHF Antennas, by Tunnel Rabbit

…and from many different materials that were comprised of steel, copper and aluminum, copper is my favorite. Unfortunately, copper is now expensive. But fortunately, the latest pile of copper was almost free to me. Last summer, I traded one antenna for a huge pile of new-condition copper pipe. One can find scrap copper, however, with hyper price inflation soon to be at our door, even scrap copper will get expensive. And so will be the fittings, yet if one is building just a few antennas, it is still worth it to buy it new as it a good way to get started. Eventually, we can learn to make J-poles from many different kinds of scrap materials, but it best to begin with standard 1/2″ ridge copper pipe, and fittings, and use an online J-pole/Slim Jim calculator to obtain the pipe lengths. The copper pipe J-pole has a major advantage for

Hybrid Field Phone System for Remotely Controlled Transceivers Often, yet not in every case, the military field phone can ring the commercial phone. Not all commercial phones are compatible with field phones. Electro-mechanical ringers require much more current to ring. If so, then a piezoelectric buzzer, instead of a electro-mechanical ringer, can be used. Or if the commercial phones are equipped with electronic ringers, many more phones can be rung simultaneously by the magneto crank type generator of a military field phone. As it is untested by myself, do not use the TA-1, or other sound-powered phones in this system. Unfortunately, the commercial phone can not ‘call’,…

Farming and Prepping As a Lifestyle, by Bulldog

…I always keep in mind that my grandparents mixed different livestock for similar reasons. The chickens and ducks followed the cattle and hogs finishing up undigested grains, particularly corn from the waste of the later. We don’t feed anything beyond 12% grains and try to provide that sparingly. The primary reason is that if all commerce stopped tomorrow we will have to get by with what we have here. I also use a commodity mix rather than the usual goat or bovine dairy feeds. Always keep in mind that at some point there may not be a local farm feed store to obtain grains. We store the various grains, salt, minerals, and diatomaceous earth in 55-gallon barrels in our rodent-proof grain room. Here I would point out that generally speaking, we have found that such grain storage may only last a year to a year and a half. Too frequently…
