The Time Has Come, by JTH

Suddenly it hit me. We are DOING IT! After years of dreaming about moving to the Redoubt, planning, plotting, learning new skills, understanding what is important, we are finally doing it. I am scared and excited at the same time. We have two more months of frantic remodeling and updating our home, in order to get top dollar, and then we’ll put the house on the market. After searching for property in Idaho online and with the help of several couples who live in Idaho and a realtor recommendation, it’s time to make a couple of trips out and get …

Safari Club International Convention Roundup

I recently attended the Safari Club International (SCI) convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. Despite the OTT crass glitziness of Vegas, I greatly enjoyed the convention and met some great subject matter experts who kindly shared some details about terrain, climate hydrology, fauna, and flora of a region of Africa that will be featured in my next novel. While the African “Big Five” guides predominated, one thing that surprised me was the number of exhibitors at the show who hailed from The American Redoubt. I’m sure that there were others, since the convention floor was enormous and I just zoomed through …

Letter Re: Idaho as a Retreat Locale

Hugh, In response to Jonathan’s letter about places to consider in Idaho, I would like to make the case for two small towns named Pierce and Weippe (We-I-P). While JR got close to talking about them when he mentioned Fraser (“Freezer”), I think he may be overlooking a couple of gems. The population of Pierce is just over 500 and Weippe just over 400. The local K-12 school (Timberline) has a total of just over 200 kids with an average class size of 16 (several classes only 3, 4, or 5). Pierce and Weippe are about 10 miles apart, and …

Letter Re: Idaho

Hello, This is intended for Jonathan Rawles. Thank you for that article. I’ve been a reader since 2007. I’ve lost my income and am loosing my home here in Montana. It is a “mix bag” in Montana with liberals everywhere. Also, this area of Montana– Lincoln County– will be a target. I am also well known to be a survivalist around here, and it might be best if I was not so well known. Because of your fine article, I will be looking at those areas mentioned. Thank you.

Getting By In Wyoming, by DBF

Retiring back in Wyoming, where I grew up, has been a real blessing. I had way too much of living in cities during my thirty years with the military. I think a lot of folks out here could be called preppers, but for us it is just the smart way to do things. We don’t have to wait for the system to collapse; every year the weather, or some other thing, has us getting by on our own. We use a lot of the techniques discussed on SurvivalBlog, and there are a few others I’ll list here that you might …
