You are completely prepared for literally anything that might happen. ”Bring it” is your motto. Happy and confident that you have reached the pinnacle of prepping, you sit down at the keyboard to take care of some work e-mail. Letter Re: Moving to Alaska

Hugh, This is just another opinion, but it may help. I moved to Alaska when I was young. I lived there for 28 years. It was a glorious time. Alaska is a beautiful place. It is a great place for young people who have lots of energy and are unafraid of work, seasons, and learning new things. I learned to hunt, to fish, to reload ammunition, to cut my own meat, and I got married. We now live in the Redoubt. There are lots of former Alaskans here. Why did we move? First, Alaska becomes more difficult to deal with …

Letter Re: Buying and Selling Rural Land

Hugh, If you have narrowed down your list to one or two properties, consider chartering an aircraft to do a visual inspection. It might cost you $300-$500 but it allows additional validation of a significant investment. Even at 1,000 feet above ground level (AGL in pilot speak) you can quickly take some pictures, makes some notes, and assess things such as the terrain, trees or vegetation, and even a potential risk if say a neighbor has something on their property that could ultimately contaminate your water supply. I know some readers will scream “my privacy!”. Here in the USA there …

Letter Re: Moving to Alaska

Hugh, When I saw the title “Moving to Alaska”, I thought to myself “WHY?” Although my wife and I have lived in Los Anchorage for over 40 years, yes, it’s getting very blue here. I must echo everything Bryan B. has said and more. About two years ago my wife and I saw the trend coming and worked and paid off our home, and our rental is almost paid off. If needed, it will be our BOL due to its size. We also partially closed our business. We get two ships a week to Anchorage; 85% of our groceries come …

Letter Re: Moving to Alaska

HJL, A recent contributor had a great letter about their move to rural Alaska. I wish them the best of luck. Living in rural Alaska myself, though off the road system, I can only hope they fair well here. My family are in the process of doing the reverse move from Alaska to the Redoubt. Interestingly enough, I had a letter posted on Survivalblog about eight years ago about my move from the city to rural off-road system Alaska. Alaska has some distinct advantages, mainly the lack of people outside cities and available subsistence in some areas. But everything else …

Buying and Selling Rural Land: Considering The Basics

Much of my work as a consultant revolves around selecting retreat properties. For more than 15 years I have assisted my clients in their quest for the most suitable and practical properties available, to assure their families the best possible chance of surviving anything from a short-term localized disaster to a long-term societal collapse. Over the past 10 years of editing SurvivalBlog, I have included many insights about the retreat property selection process, interspersed in articles and replies to letters on related topics. But in this article, I’d like to distill a lot of that experience into just one concise …

Making a Living in the Hinterboonies

One of the great quandaries faced by many American preppers is that their desire to move to a lightly-populated rural region is usually not consistent with the ability to earn a good living. Let’s face it: The job opportunities in the Hinterboonies are scarce. Unless you are retired, self-employed, or you are in a high-demand profession (such as medicine or dentistry), then it might be difficult to have the same standard of living that you’ve enjoyed in an urban or suburban community. Part of the following repeats what I wrote in SurvivalBlog back in 2009 about the sorts of jobs …

The Prepper’s American Dream: A Practical Guide To Strategic Relocation- Part 2, by Charles T.

Planning a relocation When my wife and I realized that our current location was not where we wanted to stay long term, we had to take the hard step of figuring out where else to go. To do this, we leaned heavily on the core values we had identified for ourselves. We began our relocation pursuit by identifying that we were looking for somewhere that met the following criteria: We could afford to purchase a house on one salary. We could afford to have my wife stay at home with kids. There were mountains and plentiful outdoor spaces to explore. …
