On June 16, 1896, the people of Japan awoke to find that many of their friends, neighbors, and family had perished in the night due to a tsunami. A disturbance in the Japan Trench resulted in an earthquake that reached 7.6 on the Richter scale. Following a revolt by the English nobility against his rule, King John put his royal seal on the Magna Carta, or “Great Charter” on this day in 1215AD. John Wayne, the iconic American film actor, died on June 11th, 1979.
