The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “JWR”. Our goal is to educate our readers, to help them to recognize emerging threats, and to be better prepared for both disasters and negative societal trends. You can’t mitigate a risk if you haven’t first identified a risk. Today, we look at the aftermath of the recent tornadoes.

In Rural Kentucky: The Tornado Aftermath

First up, at CNN: ‘It gets harder every day.’ For many in rural Kentucky, their Christmas gift is survival.  An excerpt:

“A week after the deadly long-track tornado ripped through western Kentucky, residents of the region were rallying around those who had suffered the worst damage, much like the Amish community that had gathered in rural Graves County, several miles outside Mayfield.
In Mayfield, a town of less than 10,000 people where more than one-in-three residents live below the poverty line, many people said they were committed to remaining in the area and rebuilding what they had lost.
But anxiety over the economic blows so many had suffered had also set in, with many beginning to confront the long process of recovery with more questions than answers.”

Mountain Lion Breaks Into California Home

H.L. sent this, at Newsweek: Mountain Lion Breaks Into Family Home, Tries to Eat Pet Dog. JWR’s Comment: Take note that this happened in southern California. Surely, local animal rights advocates will claim  that the big cat was simply making “a lifestyle choice.”

Rural Retreat Communities for Orthodox Jews in the U.S.

I’ve been in correspondence with the organizers of several rural retreat communities in the eastern, central, and southern U.S., for Orthodox Jews. Take note that these are conservative capitalists, not socialist kibbutzim. Anyone who is interested should take a look at their new web page, at:  JewishHomestead.com.

Outspoken Marine Discharged After Afghanistan Debacle

Viral Marine Scheller discharged from military after Afghanistan debacle.  The article’s opening paragraphs:

“U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller – who went viral for his videos in uniform publicly criticizing military leadership over the Afghanistan withdrawal – was discharged from the military on Thursday after 17 years of service. The discharge was processed after an unexplained two-month delay following the Marine Corps’ accepting Scheller’s resignation as part of a plea deal.

Scheller announced the official action in a Facebook post on Thursday. “I was released from the Marine Corps today, Thursday, December 23rd, 2021. I am filled with mixed emotions. I would like to sincerely thank the Marine Corps for forging me into a man. And from the bottom of my heart, I’d like to thank all the Marines who served, led, bled, and suffered alongside me the past 17 years,” he said.”

California’s Small Generator Ban

It’s Official: Generator Ban Passes in California.  This ban goes into effect in 2024.  (Thanks to G.G. for the link.)  Here is a quote:

“The California Air Resources Board (CARB) passed a regulation aimed at “Small Off-Road Engines” on Thursday that will ban the sale of portable generators in the state — which includes generators mounted in recreational vehicles.

The ruling bans the sale of gas-powered leaf blowers and lawnmowers in the state beginning in 2024. Portable generators will be required to meet more stringent standards in 2024 and meet zero-emission standards starting in 2028.

In the 2024 model year, portable generators will have to improve their efficiency by somewhere between 40% and 90%, which seems unrealistic in such a short period of time, so the reality is, it will be very hard to find a generator in Calfornia in two years.”

Beverly Hills Residents Arming Themselves With Guns

Reader G.G. flagged this news story: Beverly Hills residents arming themselves with guns in wake of violence. A quote:

“According to LA County Sheriff Alejandro Villanueva, the department has received 8,105 concealed carry weapon applications and approved 2,102 of them since he took office in December 2018, compared to his predecessor having issued 194 permits in four years.

“Even hardcore leftist Democrats who said to me in the past, ‘I’ll never own a gun’ are calling me asking about firearms,” said Joel Glucksman, a private security executive. “I’d say there has been an increase of 80 percent in the number of requests I’m getting this year.”

That trend increased last week, Glucksman said, after a beloved black philanthropist, Jacqueline Avant, was killed in her home.”
