JWR’s Recommendations of the Week

Here are JWR’s Recommendations of the Week for various media and tools of interest to SurvivalBlog readers. This week the focus is a how-to video on how to make hatchet sheaths.

Books:

I’ve noticed this book on the bookshelves when visiting several friends and relatives, so it is probably not a coincidence: 100 Deadly Skills: The SEAL Operative’s Guide to Eluding Pursuers, Evading Capture, and Surviving Any Dangerous Situation

Winter in the Wilderness: A Field Guide to Primitive Survival Skills

o o o

Primitive Bread: Remembering the Old Ways

Movies:

Dunkirk. Speaking of which, this little segment was fascinating: The sound illusion that makes Dunkirk so intense

Man, Myth,Legend: Milius.  A fine documentary on one of America’s greatest screenwriters. I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Milius a few years ago, at the Safari Club International (SCI) convention in Las Vegas. This was just a few years after his stroke, so his speech was halting. Available for free streaming to those with Amazon Prime.

Vlogs and Instructional Videos (Hatchet Sheaths):

Making a Simple Hatchet Sheath With Shoulder Strap. (JWR’s Comments: This nicely done YouTube video is nearly 20 minutes long, and quite detailed. But there is no narration–since none is needed. The method shown requires no rivets, stitching, or special tools. Of course using heavy duty leather cutting scissors is a safer and easier method for cutting full thickness cowhide leather.  And I would prefer to use paracord that is cobra braided for the strap, to make it more comfortable and versatile. (Paracord straps can be disassembled for many uses, in a pinch.) By the way, paracord is available in a variety of colors from a number of SurvivalBlog advertisers, as well as from ToughGrid.com — one of our generous long-time Writing Contest prize donors.

Gear:

Dremel 409 Cut-off Wheels .025″ thick, 36 Pack

O’Keeffe’s Working Hands Hand Cream. I’ve mentioned this cream once before. But it deserves another mention because this winter I discovered that it really helps with dry, cracked feet, too!

RAD Cycle Products Bike Lift Hoist Garage Mountain Bicycle Hoist 100LB Capacity (2-Pack).   These are great, especially if you have a garage with a high ceiling.

  1. Clint Emerson also has another book titled “100 Deadly Skills: Survival Edition: The SEAL Operative’s Guide to Surviving in the Wild and Being Prepared for Any Disaster” that makes a great addition to the one mentioned above.
