SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. How secure are your water sources? There is a looming water crises and you need to make sure you have your bases covered.
Eye Bleeding Outbreak
Uganda’s Health Ministry finally confirmed that they may be facing a large scale outbreak of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever. They also fear a large scale pandemic of this disease. Emergency response teams are being deployed to the districts of Nakaseke and Luweero. While only the nine year-old girl has succumbed to the disease in Uganda, three people in neighboring South Sudan have also died of the disease. The disease is spread to humans via tick bites or contact with raw meat and infected animal blood immediately after slaughter. It’s worth noting the rapid response is due to its high fatality ratio (10-40%) and the difficulties in treatment and prevention. Thanks to G.P. for the link.
The media blew up this weekend with a private conversation of President Trump leaked to the press where he called the less-desirable countries by a specific name. Setting aside for a moment that it was a Democratic Senator that inappropriately leaked the private conversation, that it has been taken totally out-of-context and the fact that the media never blew up like this at Obama who regularly used unsavory words, it’s interesting to note that California now counts as one of those countries.
Yep, you read that right. California, whose budget exceeds that of most countries now has the highest rate of poor and under-classed people in the United States. How’s that immigration policy working for you now? (Note that the U.S. definition of “poor” is considerably different than the rest of the worlds. Here, you can still own a 100” flat screen TV and be poor.) Thanks to M.M. for that link.
Reader TZ sent in this article on the looming water crises in the U.S. Given that water is incredibly important to your survival (only behind air and shelter in the standard list), you may want to re-evaluate your water sources. Can you filter heavy metals from your source? Do you have an independant soure? How about a backup source for when your primary is somehow fouled? The Urban water sources in the U.S. have long been neglected and many rural water sources may have been contaminated and never checked. Do your homework and make sure you have a plan.
Forget copying 20 dollar bills. The new counterfeit schemes revolve around merchandise that is often moved through major channels like Amazon or Ebay. In the last two years, we have seen plenty of counterfeit Rawles knives pop up in both places, so you have to be careful before you buy. But the ramifications can be even greater. Reader DSV sent in this article showing how one mans purchase of an upscale luggage from Amazon cost him his Trusted Traveler Status through the TSA.
Apparently the bag he ordered was off of Amazon and he paid full price for it. The bag, however, was counterfeit and he never received it as it was confiscated in route. All he knew is that he didn’t get it and he received a full refund for the bag from the original company. Behind the scenes, the TSA flagged him as an importer of counterfeit and revoked his traveler status.
Wells Fargo has announced that it will be closing 800 more branch banks by 2020 making it more difficult to get your money if you bank there. Some analysts think that this move is in response to its expenses from the fake account scandal and other high profile troubles. Nationwide, the bank will have about 5000 locations after the closures. It has also not specified how many employees will lose their jobs. I suspect our local branch will be one of those closed. I still occasionally have to do business there for a variety of reasons and they are the most sullen and unhappy bank employees I have ever dealt with making the customer service some of the worst I have ever received. Good news for those survivalists that enjoy their beer. Dogfish Head brewery is launching a beer aimed specifically at survivalists. The “It’s the End of the Wort as We Know It” (sic) is packed with more ingredients and contains more essential vitamins and amino acids. All kidding aside, it would appear to simply be cashing in on the market. Any survivalist knows that if you want beer at TEOTWAWKI, you need to learn how to make your own.
Mrs Latimer’s standard answer to cold and flu season is Elderberry syrup. During those times that we have to deal with the public when you never know if they are sick or not, she lines the whole family up and every one gets a full tablespoon every morning. It’s sort of like when mothers used to dole out the cod-liver oil, except it’s much, much tastier. Rob Moffett has posted a YouTube video on his experience with Elderberry. It’s been five years since he’s had a cold or the flu. Pretty much sums up our experience too.

Please send your news tips to HJL. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who watch news that is important to them. Due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” news. We often “get the scoop” on news that is most likely ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!
