The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods – a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. Today’s focus is again on Islam.

Second Amendment

Reader W.W. sent in his Christmas wish list for the year. St Louis Police are upgrading their hardware and will be selling 27 Thompson Sub machine Guns. These were purchased 100 years ago for $125, but they will be selling them for $22,000 each. One does have to wonder how much of that is due to ATF restrictions and how much is inflation.

Once again, the liberal progressive media demonstrates that they are above the law. The judge in Katie Couric’s anti-gun documentary debacle has dismissed the case against her even with the evidence showing how she and her producers edited the piece to make the members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) look unsure of their answers. The judge determined that even though they did have answers, none of them answered her question. Thanks to H.L. for the link.

Islam

A Virginian imam is struggling after his mosque condemned his speech on female genital mutilation (FGM). Imam Shaker Elsayed suggested that the practice was necessary to keep young girls from being hypersexually active. Of course the mosque only rejected his speech after a watchdog group circulated his speech online, which caused the mosque to receive public condemnation. It’s worth noting that the World Health Organization and most governments bran FGM  as a human rights violations.

Reader B.B. sent in this article from The Captain’s Journal which outlines some realities of sharia law. These are things that we can expect to become normal as the invasion of Muslim immigrants continues. From individual atrocities such as a man cutting off his wife’s fingers simply because she wanted to continue her education to whole communities which have become relatively sharia compliant, the problem is increasing. While mostly a European issue at the moment, it will become an American issue if the policies are not changed.

Reader DSV sent in this article on how sex slavery apologists subverted America’s wealthiest community foundation. The Silicon Valley Community Foundation regularly supports extremists organizations, such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and Islamic Relief (IR), rather than supporting reformist Muslim groups. Both CAIR and IR provide platforms to Imams who promote concubinage and other brutal practices, like Shariah sanctioned rape and sex slavery.

Security

Reader DSV sent in this article on using passphrases instead of passwords. Why? Because they are easier to remember and if sufficiently long (16 to 64 characters) they are extremely difficult to crack. You don’t have to remember obscure random character passwords to have good digital security. There are a few other good password tips, such as not reusing passwords across accounts.

Mike Williamson, SurvivalBlog’s Editor at Large, sent in this article with a demonstration of the security vulnerability in our intelligence community. The Intercept released documents on how Reality Winner (What were her parent’s thinking when they named her?) was tracked down by the NSA. You’ve heard of the “yellow dots” that modern printers use to leave an identification mark and now you’ve seen how it works.

Middle Class

Reader H.L. sent in this article on 5 trends that are destroying the middle class. College degree costs are out of sight with little return on investment. Manufacturing is being sent overseas. Stagnant wages mean both parents must work to maintain their accepted standard of living. And finally, the “gig economy” (Uber, Airbnb, et cetera) are gaining traction. While these represent jobs, they typically don’t include benefits or legal protections. Personally, I think it’s deeper than that. For years, we lived a debt driven lifestyle that subjugated us to the banking cartels. The bill is coming due now.

  1. JWR and Hugh, I just want to say that although I initially resisted the format changes here afte 7 years of reading it, the blog is now SO much better. It seems more in-depth now. Especially love the expanded commentary from HJL here and the expanded history today and the reader comments.

I find I spend a LOT more time on the site without clicking on to elsewhere. I spend as much time reading the comments on Breitbart.com as I do reading their actual articles. I think SB blog will be the same as the amount and quality of commenters increases.

Thank you for all of your hard work.

  2. I must agree with “Jefferson Franklin” I flat out HATED the change. However, now that I have become used to it, I also like the more complete articles and, my favorite, “Odds and Sods” column. (It is always the first thing I read after the “Today in History” at the top.

Keep up the good work fellas.

  3. In a past life I worked in the printing business. One time we were in the process of receiving a new piece of printing equipment, and while the technicians were reviewing the installation, I asked if they could help clear up this problem I was noticing in the print-outs.

“There’s these little yellow dots all over, I can’t seem to get rid of them….”

The older technician smiled and continued his work while the younger one jaunted over to see what was amiss. After letting him snipe-hunt for a few minutes the older tech and I had a good laugh. I asked if it was something they had access to in their software/settings, and was told no. It’s hard-coded into the imaging engine firmware itself at the factory. Big brother run’s deep (some people naively think electronics aren’t tampered w/ just because the box’s tape is intact…)

  4. Several years ago FLOTUS 0bama commented (to the effect) that that was the first time she had been proud of our nation.
Today I watched a bit of the ‘Comey/Senate Panel ‘show trial’ which was live on all the TV networks and several cable channels. For the first time (since Carter presidency) in my adult life, I was thoroughly ashamed of our nation for its elected and appointed(if, formerly) officials.
The hearing was virulent partisan ‘gotchas’ and judgmental opinion, each grandstanding on steroids! We need more light, not more heat. Dirty Laundry is NOT suitable for TV, which is a force multiplier of this propaganda.
As it has been well said, “Even cats know some things ought to be covered.”
Shame! Shame on TV, but shame on the Senators and Comey.

  5. Great article on passphrases. I’ve been using them for years for passwords and for email accounts because they’re so unique and easy to remember. However, there’s no way I would let an app generate one for me. If you have trouble thinking up something, just glance down at any reading material nearby; this will give you such phrases as “nomoreunderdonechickenorvegetables” or “whiskingeggwhites, whippingcream, andbeatingeggbatter” (I’m reading this month’s “Better Homes and Gardens”.) “taketwiceadaywithwater” isn’t bad, either. I have all my phrases written in a little book because I don’t want them on a hackable computer. This is a fantastic idea and I hope more people will try it.

  6. JWR,

I have said it before on this site and will reiterate, the VCDL is a wonderful organization and deserve support from patriots regardless of where you call home. Please visit their site and make a small donation, it is money well spent.

    God Bless
    Mike in VA
