SurvivalBlog Readers’ & Editors’ Snippets

Our weekly Snippets column is a collection of short items: responses to posted articles, practical self-sufficiency items, how-tos, lessons learned, tips and tricks, and news items — both from readers and from SurvivalBlog’s editors. Note that we may select some long e-mails for posting as separate letters.

Chris in Kentucky was the first of several blog readers to send us the link to this anti-gun slanted reporting: Muskets like those from 1776 are mostly exempt from today’s gun laws.  I’m fairly certain if that hoplophobic journalist saw the pre-1899 guns that I sell with no paperwork at Elk Creek Company, he’d have apoplexy.  Speaking of which, refer to the photo above. That is a sporterized Chilean contract Mauser Model 1895. Other than improved bullet designs and the use of non-corrosive primers, the specifications and ballistics of the 7x57mm Mauser cartridge haven’t changed since 1895. – JWR

“Being from the land of big grizzlies and some polar bears, I recommend this ‘Lead Spray’: .45-70 from Buffalo Bore. Butbe sure to read the warning label since this stuff is powerful. My dear friend Frank Monsey (passed away now) once was charged by a Kodiak grizzly from a distance of about 100 yards. He got off one round right into the bears skull (“the dish” as we call it) and it stopped it dead in its tracks about 20 feet from him. Frank was a good gunsmith, a fellow prepper, and a very good marksman. I inherited his gun shop when he passed … and I’ve shot just about every caliber from a .22 up to a .50 BMG … but those Buffalo Bores are something else. The real issue here is accuracy because you generally will only get a chance to shoot one round.

In that incident, Frank was guiding with another friend. Mike Osborn (‘The Oz’, as we call him). and both have told me they needed to get fresh drawers after that surprise encounter. I have seen a photo Frank once showed me and that bear weighed in at 1,350 pounds. Your use of ‘lead spray’ is right on.”

One of my consulting clients recently wrote to ask:

“Is there an efficient way to search for houses with the criteria we want? Maybe since our criteria are similar to what you, Joel Skousen, and others recommend, someone has already made it easy to find properties like this?”

I replied: “When using Zillow, under “Filters” try any of these as Keywords:

  • “Gravity”  (To find properties with gravity-fed spring water)
  • “Artesian”  (To find properties with artesian wells)
  • “Shelter”  (To find properties with either storm shelters or fallout shelters)
  • “Gas well” (To find properties with developed natural gas wells.)
  • “Adjoins” or “borders”  (To find properties that adjoin BLM land, state land, or USFS land.)
  • “End of road” (to find properties with more privacy.)
  • “No covenants” or “No HOA” (to find properties with no restrictions on keeping livestock, hunting, or target shooting.)”
