Letter Re: Article V Convention

JWR & HJL:

After reading the article Bloomberg’s Anti-National Concealed Carry Reciprocity Bill Editorial Shoots Itself in the Foot – DSV, with reference to ten years from now, I was reminded of an article concerning the proposed Article V Convention. This I believe is one of the most, if not the most, important matter we need to keep ourselves aware of and do all in our power to defeat it before the required number of states can be met. This is an outstanding website with untold valuable information concerning our country and Constitution. I believe your readers would benefit from using the info contained to educate themselves and others on how our Republic was set up and how it’s “supposed” to work.

This particular article has links referencing one of the supposed new constitutions (there are five already pre-written) that could be enacted should an Article V Convention be called. Reading the one linked is nothing short of scary, and I served three tours in Southeast Asia and don’t scare easily. One in particular: Article I – B – Section 8 reads; “SECTION 8. There shall be a responsibility to avoid violence and to keep the peace; for this reason the bearing of arms or the possession of lethal weapons shall be confined to the police, members of the armed forces, and those licensed under law.”

Please read through the proposed “Constitution for the Newstates of America” and come to your own conclusions.

I don’t hear much regarding this matter posted anywhere and believe your readers, and many more, need to be made and kept aware of it. It is my firm belief that should an Article V Convention be called, with this present day political climate such as it is, America as we know it will cease to exist, and the conclusion will be a most disastrous affair. It will, I believe, inevitably lead to the second revolution with the outcome the same, with many more deaths. But perhaps that is what is needed in our present day– for the Tree of Liberty to be nourished with the blood of patriots and tyrants. Semper Fi – God – Country – Corps – N.S.

Journalist Arrested For Defense of First Amendment

JWR’s Comment: We’ve mentioned Gary Hunt’s web site in SurvivalBlog in the past. I hope that readers took my advice and saved the content of those pages before they came under a Federal gag order. It was Hunt who named the large number of paid Federal informants that had infiltrated themselves into the Bundy protest group. And these men, we learned, were not just informants. Many of them were in actuality Agent Provocateurs who actively pushed the group to take illegal actions. Federal Judge Anna Brown apparently felt that Gary Hunt publishing that information constituted a threat—not a threat to a safety of the Federal agents but rather a threat by exposing the FBI’s 21st Century modus operandi. (Of the 22 “holdouts” at the Malheur Refuge, seven of them were paid Federal informants!) Hunt’s arrest is a bad precedent, as it indicates that the Federal courts have no respect for the First Amendment—at least not when it comes to journalists who expose Federal perfidy.

Ruger/CRKT All-Cylinders +P, by Pat Cascio

For some reason I just can’t get some people to understand that gun makers don’t make the knives with their names on them. Remington knives have been around for a long, long time, and some are highly collectible, too. It’s the same with Winchester knives, and some are collectibles. I even suggested to one gun company, and I won’t reveal who it is, that they do collaboration with a knife company and have knives made with the name of the gun company on it. They did!

This isn’t all that hard to understand, but it is for some folks. It takes a special kind of tooling and people to operate those machines and to manufacture knives. Gun companies simply aren’t interested in investing the time and money to do this, so they go to a knife company and have them produce knives with the name of the gun company on the blade and/or handle. Some knives are designed in-house; some are designed by well-known knife makers. Some of these knife makers/designers may or may not get credit for their efforts.

Another area that remains a mystery to many people is that gun makers don’t make the magazines that go in their semiautomatic firearms. Yes, I know; magazines for Colt 1911 handguns are stamped “Colt” on them. So are magazines made for Ruger firearms and all the other gun makers who produce semiautomatic firearms. But trust me, the gun companies have well-established magazine companies produce their magazines to the specifications outlined by the gun company. The magazine maker stamps the name of the gun company on the magazines. Again, it is quite a process to tool-up and train people just to make magazines, so it’s easier to let a company who specializes in manufacturing magazines do it.

A couple of years ago, Columbia River Knife & Tool– CRKT started producing knives for Ruger firearms, and they also stamp CRKT on the knives as well as Ruger on the blades. Best of all is that most of these knives are designed by some pretty well-known knife makers/designers. As many readers will undoubtedly know, CRKT produces one of my knife designs– the OC3 double-edge fighting knife. It was a joint collaboration between Brian Wagner and me. I can design knives, but I can’t make them, I’m sad to say. However, Brian Wagner and I met at a knife show, and I could see his designs were on the same wave length as I was. He has produced several of my designs over the years. Believe me, it is no small task to do any sort of collaboration and get it into the hands of the public. In my case, the OC3 took four years to finally come out.

Let’s get back to the knives that CRKT is producing for Ruger. If you know anything about Ruger firearms, you will know that, at least in my humble opinion, they over-engineer most of their firearms. Their firearms are strong, very strong, and that’s a good thing. I’ve always said that Ruger produces firearms for blue collar types, like myself. I requested one particular knife sample from CRKT, which they are producing for Ruger, and I picked this design because it was the brain-child of fellow Oregonian, Bill Harsey. Harsey was hand-making the Applegate/Fairbairn double-edge fighting knife for the late Col. Rex Applegate when I was working for him. For whatever reason, my path never crossed with Harsey’s whenever he brought a run of knives to Applegate’s home. However, Harsey’s reputation is well known in the knife industry, and he produces some stout and well thought out fixed and folding knives.

The sample I requested from CKRT is the All-Cylinders +P, and it is definitely a +P design. It is a massive folder with a five inch blade. You can also get a smaller version, too. The All-Cylinders +P has a locking liner and a thumb stud for fast opening; however, on my sample, the blade tension screw was a bit too tight. A few seconds later with a Torx driver, the blade was easy and quick to open with the thumb stud. I like the black stone-washed look on the blade; it’s very tactical looking, and the black/gray G-10 handle scales is made of super tough stuff that I’d expect with any knife with Ruger’s name on it.

The bolsters on the front of the handle are black anodized aluminum, and there is one really cool feature– the revolver-style cylinders on either side of the blade where the tension screw is. Well, as I said, it looks like the cylinders of a revolver. The blade is a drop point design, but it’s not your everyday style. It has the well-known Harsey shape to it. There is a two position pocket/clothing clip on the front of the handle, and you can switch the clip from right hand/pocket carry to left hand/pocket carry.

The blade steel is stainless steel 8Cr13MoV, and it has a Rockwell of 58-59 hardness. The knife is massive, and it is 6.18 inches closed and 11.25 inches opened with the 5-inch blade. This is no light-weight folder, either. It comes in at 11.6 oz. There is also a lanyard hole in the handle, but it isn’t positioned at the very rear of the handle; it is forward of the butt about an inch. The knife is slightly more than half an inch wide, too. The blade has a raised ramp on the back of it with friction grooves for a sure thumb placement when holding the knife in the fencing position. The liner-lock is very thick, with no worries about it slipping or breaking under some harsh conditions, either.

I have but one concern, and that is the narrow and thin clothing/pocket clip. Compared to the rest of the knife, it seems to be a little flimsy. However, I’m not about to second guess Bill Harsey’s design. I carried the knife if my right front pocket. The clip did catch on some items, but the clip didn’t bend or break, and I’ve had this happen with lesser folders, where the clip completely snapped off. Still, I would have liked a much more robust pocket/clothing clip, in keeping with the overall massive appearance of the knife.

Hands down, this may be the sharpest knife I’ve ever tested right out of the box, from CRKT. It was hair popping sharp, and it held the edge during my testing, which consisted of kitchen use, cutting open cardboard boxes, and easily slicing through blackberry vines. All things aside, this is one super-stout folding knife and one that will serve your daily carry needs, as well as hunting and survival needs. Many of our readers have asked me to test some “bigger” folding knives, and here is one that won’t let you down; it’s a brute. Saving the best for last, the full retail price is only $99.99. Yep, you read that right. It’s under a hundred bucks, and you can shop around and find it even less expensive on the ‘net. And, for those who are interested, this knife is made in China, but you get as good as you want from China. I suspect if this knife were made in the USA, it would be double or more in price.

I’d love to see Ruger sell some of their handguns or rifles and include this knife, or for that matter any of their knives that CRKT is producing for them, as a package deal. I’m sure a lot of gun buyers would jump on a package deal– a gun and a knife all at the same time. Check out www.shopruger.com for full details and ordering information on this and the entire line-up of CRKT/Ruger knives. The line-up is growing.

Recipe of the Week: Pork with Cherries, by MHL

This recipe is my version of an old traditional French recipe, Porc aux Pruneaux, which I altered several years ago after a bumper crop of cherries. This is one of the treats of November after a hog is slaughtered and there’s lots of fresh pork on hand.

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds pork shoulder or boneless rib meat, cut into bite sized chunks
  • 1 large onion, cut into large dice
  • 3 cups chicken stock OR 3 cups water & one bullion cube OR just 3 cups water
  • 1/2 cup white wine, if available (increase water by 1/2 cup if not using)
  • 1 1/2 cups dried cherries. (Sour cherries work best, but use what you have available.)
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 Tablespoon dried rosemary leaves
  • 1 Tablespoon dried rubbed sage
  • 1 or 2 garlic cloves, peeled & left whole
  • 1 Tablespoon flour
  • 2 Tablespoons oil or other fat, but not butter
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Heat oil over medium heat in a heavy dutch oven that has a lid.
  2. Toss meat with flour to lightly coat and then brown in batches in oil. Remove from pot & set aside.
  3. Sauté onion until translucent, adding more oil if necessary.
  4. Add garlic, rosemary, and sage; sauté for 1 minute. Stir in wine, if using, scraping up any browned bits on the bottom of the pot; then add stock and bay leaves, and return pork to pot.
  5. Cover pot and lower heat to a simmer, checking liquid level periodically until meat is tender, about an hour to an hour and a half, adding stock or water if needed.
  6. Add cherries and continue to simmer until cherries have re-hydrated and liquid has thickened. If you think it is too thin, stir in a bit of cornstarch mixed with cold water, or if it is too thick add a little more stock. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Serve over noodles or rice.

Household Basics in TEOTWAWKI- Part 9, by Sarah Latimer

Last week, I began this part of the series on the subject of oil in TEOTWAWKI. I rejected the GMO oils, namely corn and canola oil, for health reasons. I spoke about my favorite oils– coconut and olive, for their many uses and health benefits, and I explained my inevitable problem with their inaccessibility or short supply. I also shared that we own a Piteba nut and seed oil expeller, which is designed to produce consumable oils from many types of seed, nut, and bean sources.

Health and Storage Issues With Lard

Now that you are caught up, let me address another type of oil that I have rejected but need to explain, because it may be your choice for oil. Years ago, I read an article (which I can no longer locate online) suggesting that there are some health benefits as well as flavor and texture reasons to cause a person to consider using lard (rendered pork fat) for cooking. This article somewhat shocked me, as I thought animal fats were well known to be taboo because of their health risks, but I read the article just the same to see what was said. I am willing to make changes when I receive information that convinces me to do so, even if this information goes against what I have heard growing up, such as thinking that solid, animals fats are unhealthy for our hearts and arteries. I dug into the facts a bit and tried to set aside the memories of how my mother would keep some rendered fat in the refrigerator for seasoning beans but use it meagerly, especially after my father’s health conditions became a concern for our family. Lard, of course, has plenty of fats, fatty acids, and cholesterol, but it also has a small amount of Vitamin D, Zinc, Selenium, and something called Choline, which is a mineral that plays a role in the B-Vitamin complex and is important for cell health. I initially wondered if this article had a valid point about lard being “healthier” than I thought. I recognized that there were some benefits to saturated fats and that the hydrogenated polyunsaturated fats that have been marketed as healthy actually are not. However, not all saturated fats are alike. Lard has omega fats, which I knew about, recognize need to be in balance, and can source through other plants/oils. Lard also had this choline stuff, which was new to me. I discovered that though our bodies naturally synthesize choline, many people find their bodies require additional intake of this mineral, especially postmenopausal women, pregnant and nursing women, as well as some aging men and women, too. In a published medical paper on choline by Dr. Steven Zeisel, M.D. states that the adequate intake (AI) for women over 19 is 425mg and for men over 19 is 550mg. One cup of lard has approximately 102mg of choline and beef fat (tallow) has approximately 164mg, according to the USDA National Nutrient Database information. However, just one slice of pan-fried beef liver provides a whopping 338mg of choline, one cup of roasted chicken breast meat provides 119 mg, a cup of 2% milk has 40mg, a cup of cauliflower and a cup of cooked black beans each have 60mg of choline, and even a 1.63-ounce bag of peanut M&Ms has 17mg. Choline is in many things. In addition to the vitamins and minerals I discovered are in lard, tallow also had Vitamin E, but it had a higher level of cholesterol than lard. I knew that not all cholesterol is bad, yet I still was not convinced it was the best way for us to cook. I have grown plants/seeds that contain these same vitamins and minerals with what I believe to be less risk to our heart and arteries.

Biblical Issues With Lard

Even more significant than the health factors associated with lard is the fact that in our home we do not consider pork products to be “food”. Because our God– the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob– says that pork is not considered food for His people (in Leviticus 11 and Deteronomy 14), our family does not consume any kind of pork or pork byproduct. I know that many people eat things that the LORD says are unclean (not food) for His people, and they choose to do so. There are people who eat roaches, rats, cats, horses, and dogs, but we don’t choose to eat these things or any of the things the LORD God says are unclean. You probably don’t eat the things I listed above either, yet I don’t have the authority to tell anyone else what they can or cannot eat. That’s between each person and God. I didn’t make this earth and all that is within it, so I don’t make the rules. I recognize that God made all things, and He did not make all things for people to consume. Some things are for the consumption of plants and animals, according to their position in the food chain, which differs from mankind’s. Our God has an order to things, and I choose to respect it. I love horses, but I don’t eat them. My extended family and I have had many kinds of pets, including pet pigs, but we didn’t put them on the barbecue. I acknowledge that others eat what they choose. Some will argue that we can eat anything. They may even cite Peter’s dream with the sheet coming down with unclean food on it, but if they will read this in context, they may realize this vision was to show Peter that he needed to accept “unclean” people, specifically the Roman named Cornelius, with whom he would normally refuse to dine or enter his home. Peter’s willingness and obedience to go to Cornelius’ home, accepting his invitation to stay with him, was very significant. The obedience of these men to go outside what was familiar to them paved the way for expanded knowledge of Jesus and the redemptive story to be spread to the Gentiles. The vision was not about food but something much greater. None of us is clean without the forgiveness and mercy of our Lord and Savior! For me though, eating what my LORD instructs is about obedience, and as a follower of Jesus I want to do what my perfect Messiah did. He didn’t eat pork or lard, so it is not an option for me to eat it either. I will choose to honor him by keeping my table “clean”, where He could comfortably dine with me and also to teach me to adjust my tastes for His tables, which I am sure will not have any pork products. His Father and He are one, and they clearly said not to eat of it, so I will not intentionally disobey my Master. Therefore, lard is not an option!

Tallow

We can eat beef, venison, and mutton, and so tallow (rendered fat) from these animals might be an option, but it would be low on the list of oil preferences for health reasons. In TEOTWAWKI, we will need added calories, but we will still want our arteries, heart, and brain to function optimally. My family members who most enjoyed eating highly fatty meats are the very ones who struggled with heart conditions, clogged arteries, and alzheimer-type symptoms. This is circumstantial evidence, I know, but it supports what my doctors tells me too. I won’t say that I would not ever consider using venison, mutton or possibly beef suet for an oil option, but my preferred options will remain vegetable oil. Some pastries will require either tallow or butter, but one factor that concerns me regarding animal-based fats is the requirement for refrigeration. I don’t want to be required to refrigerate or freeze my oils, and animals fats are usually produced in bulk and then require refrigeration for storage beyond a month. Tallow is a good thing to render for many homestead purposes other than for cooking, so we need to know how to do it. It is easy!

To make tallow, cut all the meat and blood out of the fat/suet. Then, finely chopped or cut it into small cubes (less than one inch in size) and put it in a crock pot on low or in a heavy pan on the stove over a very low heat to slowly raise the suet temperature to 180-200 degrees and then simmer it for about six to eight hours until the moisture has evaporated and the impurities separated. The solid impurities, called crackle, will form and may rise to the surface. After the simmering time is complete, put on protective gloves, as the rendered fat will be very hot and can cause serious burns. Carefully, strain the rendered fat through cheesecloth in a colander. It is important to remove all of the crackle solids, no matter how small, so it is a good idea to run it through cheesecloth a second time or even to pour the hot rendered oil through a coffee filter, switching out the coffee filter if it gets clogged with solids. Once all of the solids are removed, pour the hot tallow into a clean, dry storage jar and keep it in a cool, dark place for up to a month or in the refrigerator for up to six months.

Hand-pressed Vegetable Oils

Vegetable oils are the healthiest options, and the Piteba expeller will be the means by which I process my vegetable oil– my main oil in TEOTWAWKI. Let’s look at vegetable oil production.

The Piteba site provides valuable information, including information on obtaining oil from each type of vegetable product. For example, it indicates an extraction efficiency rate for each seed/bean/nut type that range from the soya bean at only 67% to pistachio nuts at 87% efficiency. Their website also provides the estimated ounces of oil per pound of raw seed/bean/nut used. Obviously, to make any quantity of oil, many pounds of the seed, bean, or nut are required. While some of these seeds and nuts could be stored long term, waiting to be pressed into oil, we would still end up with an exhausted supply eventually. I am looking for a renewable, long-term source in the event that other oils are not produced and/or made available in my area after TEOTWAWKI occurs. Whatever raw material I use to make oil, I need to be able to grow it on our property or obtain it locally. It’s our preference to have control of the supply by growing it ourselves.
