SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. There are several interesting articles today, but the EMP article is a good refresher (or starter) for those who want to check on their preps in that area.

EMP

Reader H.L. sent in this article on the effects of EMP. The author believes this is the most likely and most dangerous proposition the U.S. could ever face as few outside of the prepper community are even pondering such an end. Fewer still are prepared to survive such an SHTF event. For those unfamiliar with the effects of the EMP, the initial problem is just the beginning. A large scale EMP attack would cripple the power grid, which would cascade to multiple failures.

The inability to refine and pump petroleum products would cause the trucking industry to grind to a halt. This would, in turn, create a supply disaster for the large cities that cannot feed themselves. Medical services would be extremely hampered and law & order would easily break down. As the famous government report states, this sort of event could result in over 90% casualties to the U.S. population within just a few short months.

Power in Venezuela

Large swaths of the socialist utopia of Venezuela are without power as the economic chaos leaves the power companies without the funds to repair the grid. A nation with one of the largest oil reserves in the world cannot keep it’s own lights on now. Blackouts are nothing new to the country though. They’ve struggled for over two decades of socialist rule, but they are more frequent and last longer now. One profiled community has been without power for over a month when a power transformer exploded. The officials repeatedly promise that it will be fixed tomorrow. As reader S.R., who sent this link in, reports: It’s reminiscent of the scene in Atlas Shrugged at the end of the book when the power goes out. The collapse is nearly complete.

May 5th is the birthday of Pat Frank (1908-1964). This was the pen name of newspaper journalist Harry Hart Frank. His novel Alas, Babylon is a survivalist classic. His personal life was marred by alcoholism, but his writing is admired and still surprisingly popular today. (Alas, Babylon is still in print, after more than 50 years!) As an homage to Pat Frank, one of the settings in JWR’s novel Expatriates is Mt. Dora, Florida, which was fictionalized by Pat Frank as Fort Repose in Alas, Babylon.

Guess What? We Grow Up, by The Autistic Prepper

It was good to read about dealing with autistic children and their special needs in survival situations, and I’d like to thank Grey Woman for her article. There have been articles about the elderly, the physically handicapped, those with dementia, but we on the autistic spectrum have been largely ignored. Our differences are too bizarre for most people to understand.

Adult With Autism; We Grow Up

Let me introduce myself. I’m an adult with autism, and I’m also a fervent SurvivalBlog reader and occasional contributor. I also like to watch water going down a drain, insist that my egg be on the right side of my plate, and relax by studying the structure of the knotholes in our paneled den. “Quirky” is putting it mildly.

Prefer “Difference”

Incidentally, I never really liked calling what I am a “disorder”; I prefer “difference”. For some reason, no one understands, my brain works differently from that of other people. Human brains, like human faces, are very different. It’s doubtful Mozart could have written “Hamlet”, and I doubt Shakespeare could have dreamed up the prototype helicopter da Vinci designed. The autistic brain is just different. Sometimes this difference is good; sometimes it’s uncomfortable and unpleasant for me and those around me.

If you ever meet me, you won’t perceive anything unusual. I’m good at hiding my differences. Besides, I rarely speak to people. I don’t relate well, because I can’t perceive the subtle cues in body language or sometimes even speech. I usually miss jokes, and teasing goes over me like a waterfall. I just don’t get it.

This week was dominated by gardening tasks, horse work, and looking after our rapidly-growing chicks.

Lily and our kids had a bit of a rodeo, getting ready for our local farrier’s regular hoof trimming visit. But it went well.

I did some organizing in JASBORR, and the whole family did a seasonal re-organization of our bug-out bags.

We also did a repair on our main garden fence. (Even cedar posts rot out, eventually!)

Aircraft Incidents

China is reportedly increasing their lazing of American military flights near a U.S. Military base in Africa. High power lasers are being aimed at U.S. aircraft flying over the east African country of Djibouti, aimed from the Chinese base in Doraleh resulting in eye injuries for two American pilots. The U.S. has lodged a formal complaint with the Chinese government, but China has not officially responded. China has complained about U.S. flights over it’s Djibouti outpost in the past though. Eleven Farm Attacks in 100 Hours

According to this article sent in by M.S., the situation in South Africa continues to escalate with 11 attacks against White-owned farms in 100 hours. In those 11 attacks, there were three murders committed. With an estimated 30,000 farmers, being a white farmer is now one of the most dangerous occupations in South Africa. The included video brings to light the escalated violence showing looting, burning, destruction and chaos during the riots in the North West province. It should also be noted that while the violence is escalating, the media coverage is headed in the opposite direction.

On May 4, 1970, Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire on anti-war protesters at Kent State University, killing four students and wounding nine others. Also on this day in 1994, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and PLO leader Yasser Arafat signed an accord on Palestinian autonomy that granted self-rule in the Gaza Strip and Jericho, creating what the world believed would be peace at last in the Middle East. Of course, the Palestinians then, as now, threw away the peace agreement and resumed hostilities towards Israel.

When I was growing up, my parents owned a store in the tiny town that shared our zip code. Dad sold guns, ammo, tack, grain, used furniture and whatever else happened to come in to the “Horse Trader”. He also sold hunting and fishing licenses and was the town’s only UPS drop. Although the Horse Trader filled a niche in the local economy, perhaps its greatest contribution was that of a meeting place.

Every small town, especially isolated mountain towns, need a place for people to come together. It is in these meeting places that lives are shared and burdens lifted, and that the woes of the world are passionately discussed. The Horse Trader, with its homemade wood stove, bottomless coffee pot and locally made pastries was the very hub of community influence.

As a child and young adult, I spent many hours in the Horse Trader. I organized and dusted and poured coffee. And I listened. I listened while conservatives ranted about eroding freedoms and liberals decried social injustice. I listened while opposing sides discussed current events, mocking the others’ lack of intellectual capacity. I listened and I thought and I came to my own conclusions about the world around me.

Through the years, I have continued to follow current events. I have continued to listen to opposing sides each trying to convince the people of their particular truth. I have filtered these “truths” through the empirical truth of God’s word, and in the process, I have come to see the true agenda of the political forces at work in our world. And what I see is death.

Letter: Gun Violence

Hugh,
There is unacceptable gun violence in our country. Pro gun versus anti gun citizens and groups go head to head and fight over gun control. I believe we should all be working together to figure out what the real causes of this violence is, working as a team to erase mass shootings and gun crime.

These occurrences make all Americans look bad. We are all to blame– gun owners as well as those who are fighting to end the right for citizens to protect themselves and exercise their constitutional rights.

Maybe there should be a nationwide policy through which the names and details of these shooters lives are erased and the reward of becoming a household name or a name immortalized in the history of our nation is removed from the equation. Furthermore, they should be condemned by all leaders of our society, political or not, as the most disgusting subhuman cowards to ever have existed.

I believe, as a gun owner, there are many reasons why this is happening in our society and gun control alone is not the only answer. Kids can 3D print weapons in their homes. People are fabricating fully automatic weapons in their garages. The technology for firearms is over 600 years old and cannot be kept from evil doers. Removing it from law abiding citizens is unconstitutional. These tools are available in large numbers, due to the cold war and other military ventures, and this very old technology is impossible to keep away from people.

Chevrolet, however, was not beaten so easily and at the 25-mile post his number lead the others on the score board. Shortly after this, however, Burman again gained command, and from that point on held his field in check. All the way, however, he was grimly pursued by Chevrolet.

Burman, however, had plenty up his sleeve and nearing the finish he felt so safe that he stopped at the pits to take on a supply of gasoline and oil. Reducing the Breadcrumbs Produced By Your Digital Life, by P.L.

None of us want to unknowingly share personal information, but it’s happening everyday if you browse the web, use email, or have a mobile phone. You could decide “I’m going off the grid!”. That’s great if you can, but it’s not practical for 99% of us.

The Breadcrumbs

So, how might you go about reducing the breadcrumbs produced by your digital life?

ProtonMail

First, consider using ProtonMail for your personal email. There are no ads and no tracking. A basic account is free. I paid for the Plus account, since I wanted more features. I access ProtonMail on my iPhone using their app (instead of using Apple Mail or another mail app). I was using Google’s Gmail and the Gmail app on my iPhone.

Tor Web Browser

Consider using the Tor web browser instead of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, or anything similar. Tor is free. If not Tor, then consider using Firefox , which is also free. I was using Chrome and now use a combination of Tor and Firefox.

Configure Browser to Use DuckDuckGo

Consider configuring your web browser to use the DuckDuckGo search engine instead of Bing, Google, or Yahoo. It’s a weird name, but it is real. Look in Preferences or Settings for your web browser, search the Internet for the simple instructions, or ask a friend. I was using the Google search engine before.

iPhone

If you need a smart phone, then consider switching from Google’s Android to Apple’s iPhone. Apple makes money from the device, not from capturing and utilizing your breadcrumbs. I continue to use an iPhone. I’m not acting as an Apple fan boy here; I believe there are some deep “hooks” in the Android operating system that will continue to emit your breadcrumbs, even if you remove a bunch of the Android-provided apps.

Letter Re: Normalcy Bias

Hugh,

According to Wikipedia, “The normalcy bias, or normality bias, is a belief people hold when facing a disaster. It causes people to underestimate both the likelihood of a disaster and its possible effects, because people believe that things will always function the way things normally have functioned.” It may refer to a disaster, but surely it has a cousin that causes people not to see or consider a “sea change” in technology and its impact on life and politics.

Impact of Computers on Life

Consider how people viewed the impact of computers on life, say 30 years ago. Few people thought computers would have any impact beyond the occasional absurd bill in the mail “some computer generated”.

I think we may be on the verge of another “sea change” in technology. It might be well to consider its impact, if it happens.

Compact Fusion Generator

Recently the Russians have bragged about a cruise missile with nuclear power and “unlimited range.” Absurd? Then consider that Lockheed Martin received patents in February 2018 for a “compact fusion generator” which would provide vast amounts of energy, based in large part on Russian Tokomak technology. Lockheed Martin is a company of proven technological superiority (from the U2 to the SR-71 and its rumored successor), and they are not given to making wild boasts. In 2014 they predicted a demonstration of this technology in five years. Then, last month they again stated a demonstration by late 2019.
