Reminder: There is a “silver strike” on the banks planned for today, May 1, 2013. Send the banksters a message and withdraw your extra cash today and use it to buy physical silver! — May 1st is also the birthday of Louis Cukela, a Croatian-born American Marine, born 1888, died March 19, 1956. He was one of only 19 two-time recipients of the Medal of Honor. — Today we present another entry for Round 46 of the SurvivalBlog non-fiction writing contest. The prizes for this round include: First Prize: A.) Gunsite Academy Three Day Course Certificate, good for any one, two, or three course. (A $1,195 value.) B.) Ready Made Resources just started a 25% off sale on Mountain House canned long term storage foods. Check it out! — The volatility in the precious metals markets is continuing, with some dramatic intra-day swings in spot prices. My long-standing advice has been “buy on a dip day”, but perhaps presently it should be: buy on a dip hour. Once silver resumes its bull charge–past $30 and then the $40 per troy ounce, you will be glad that you “bought low.” OBTW, sales have been very strong for the new American Redoubt .999 fine silver coin. These very attractive 1-ounce …

April 28th is the birthday of Aimo Johannes Lahti. (Born in 1896.) This clever Finn designed (or co-designed) an amazing array of weapons including the L-35 Lahti pistol, the Suomi M-31 submachinegun, the Lahti-Saloranta M/26 LMG, the famous Lahti L-39 20mm anti-tank rifle, and even the 20 ItK 40 (a 20 mm dual anti-aircraft cannon.) — Today we present another entry for Round 46 of the SurvivalBlog non-fiction writing contest. Today is the birthday of Carolyn Cole (born 1961) a well-known staff photographer for the Los Angeles Times. For a few years in the late 1960s, the Cole family lived next door to my parents’ house in Livermore, California. That little girl with whom I played hide-and-seek would grow up to earn a Pulitzer Prize, two World Press Photo awards, and be named Photojournalist Of The Year. Congrats and Happy Birthday, Carolyn! — Today we present another entry for Round 46 of the SurvivalBlog non-fiction writing contest. The prizes for this round include: First Prize: A.) Note from JWR:

I learned about the planned Internet Blackout for today at the 11th Hour, after I had already assembled and edited all of the posts. So instead of blacking out my blog site, I’m merely delaying posting a feature article that I had written. I have also specially selected a quote of the day. Granted, these are just token protests, but I believe that the CISPA Bill is bad legislation, and that it should be stopped. The bill is on its way to the Senate, so please add it to your list of topics for the next time that you contact …

Notes from JWR:

This year April 21st is Aggie Muster Day, for all Texas A&M Corps of Cadets graduates. Aggie Muster celebrations and meetings are held as far away as Japan, Germany, and Afghanistan. I should mention that my maternal grandfather (U.S. Army Cavalry Corps) was an Aggie–something mentioned so often that everyone in our family also felt like de facto Aggies. Other than the officers that matriculate though West Point, the three institutions that seem to have the greatest ongoing esprit de corps for their graduates are Texas A&M, The Citadel, and VMI. I felt almost obliged to include an Aggie character …

Notes from JWR:

April 19th marks multiple anniversaries: The Battles of Lexington and Concord, the Warsaw Ghetto uprising against the Nazis in 1943, the BATF’s costly raid on the Branch Davidian Church in Waco (20 years ago, today), the gun turret explosion on the USS Iowa in 1989, and very sadly also the Oklahoma City bombing, in 1995. April 19th is also the birthday of novelist Ralph Peters. Coincidentally, we I both have the same literary agent, Robert Gottlieb. — Today we present another entry for Round 46 of the SurvivalBlog non-fiction writing contest. Notes from JWR:

The Toomey-Manchin-Schumer scheme has thankfully failed to muster enough votes, but be vigilant. BHO is reportedly livid, so don’ be surprised to hear of some new Executive Orders related to firearms–for example restricting importation of full capacity magazines, military surplus gun parts, military surplus ammunition, and “non-sporting” guns. Since the administration no doubt already has them in their back pocket, some new E.O.s could be announced as soon as Friday. — Today we present another entry for Round 46 of the SurvivalBlog non-fiction writing contest. Notes from JWR:

Please pray for the families of those killed and injured at the Boston Marathon Bombing. OBTW, my cursory examination of the videotape leads me to believe that it was an act of domestic terrorism. And the brownish color of the smoke just after the blast does not bode well for American target shooters. I suspect that the explosive used was Tannerite–a binary low explosive that is legal for use as an explosive rifle target in most states. — You’ll note that today’s blog coincidentally includes two similar-looking but unrelated acronyms: COMEX and CONEX. The former is an abstraction of something …
