Notes from HJL:

February 2nd is the birthday of Ayn Rand (born Alisa Zinov’yevna Rosenbaum in 1905 and died March 6, 1982). She is, of course, remembered for her novel, Atlas Shrugged, which is considered a Libertarian classic. While I sharply disagree with her views on religion (atheism), I admire both her skill as a writer and her ability to articulate some core precepts of human liberty.

Notes from HJL:

February 1st is the anniversary of the secession of Texas from the United States in 1861. A State Convention considering secession opened in Austin on January 28th, 1861 and on February 1st, by a vote of 166 to 8, adopted an Ordinance of Secession from the United States. It’s important to note that not all Texans favored this act. Though the state Governor, Sam Houston, was loyal to the union, he refused offers from President Lincoln to keep him in office and was subsequently deposed as governor. February 1st is also the day that the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated over …

Notes from HJL:

Our prayers are sent on behalf of those in the Southeast who have been hit by a severe winter storm. WHNT has a story with links to several videos: Alabama EMA: 5 People Died, 23 Injured in Tuesday’s Winter Weather Alabama has been hit the hardest, but other states are suffering as well. It is important to remember that in these states, the temperature generally stays pretty warm and when snow hits, it’s a recipe for black ice. One more reason to always be prepared. Stay safe!

Notes from SurvivalBlog Editors:

Note from JWR: On a recent trip to the eastern U.S., my wife and I had the opportunity to finally meet face to face with sci-fi novelist Mike Williamson, (SurvivalBlog’s Editor at Large) and his family. It was great fun to put faces to names, and to build stronger bonds than is possible through mere correspondence. Notes from HJL: January 27th is the birthday of the late Helen Chenoweth, (born, 1938, died October 2, 2006), a controversial Republican congresswoman from Orofino, Idaho.

Notes from SurvivalBlog Readers:

Sometimes SurvivalBlog gets small emails from our readership that just are not big enough to warrant placement in their own blog post. Some of these can be quite profound too. Rather than just let them fall by the wayside or respond privately, I will post them in this section. – HJL —– A quick note of thank you from B. Jim, Pat will be greatly missed. Us southern Louisiana preppers will keep him and his family in our prayers. – B. —– And another quick note from P.W. HJL said it “The reality is that we can’t go it alone.” …

Notes from HJL:

January 23rd is the birthday of John Moses Browning, (born 1855) the brilliant designer of dozens of guns including the M1911 pistol, Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), and the venerable M2 .50 Caliber Machine gun. The latter is still in service in at least 95 countries. And I wouldn’t be surprised if it is still in service in 2075 or even 2100. — Pat Cascio has decided to cap his pen and retire from his position as SurvivalBlog’s Field Gear Editor. His last reviews will be posted in April. Please don’t send him any more products for test and evaluation. — …

Notes from JWR:

The Managing Editor position at SurvivalBlog has been tentatively filled. My sincere thanks to the more than 50 people who sent resumes. There were a lot of wonderful candidates, but only a couple of them met all of our experience requirements. — I have a very trustworthy friend who is looking for a live-in caretaker or house-sitter position at a retreat in northern California. (Preferably anywhere between Tuolumne County and Shasta County.) He is a conscientious non-smoking single man in his 50s. Please e-mail me if you presently have an opening for a caretaker or house-sitter position in that region. …
