Notes for Tuesday – August 26, 2014

August 26, 526, is the official anniversary of the invention of toilet paper by the Chinese. We celebrate this, not because of the convenience of it. In fact, it has many shortcomings, some described within the articles and letters of SurvivalBlog. We celebrate it primarily because now we have an official metric of just how hard core of a prepper you are as well as a metric for just how economically unstable your country is. August 26, 1946 is also the official release date of George Orwell’s “Animal Farm.” o o o Today, we present another entry for Round 54 …

Notes for Monday – August 25, 2014<

August 25th is a birthday shared by novelist Frederick Forsyth (born 1938) and American humorist Patrick F. McManus (born 1933.) Forsyth was the author of The Day of the Jackal, The Odessa File, The Fourth Protocol, The Dogs of War, The Devil’s Alternative, and many others. McManus was born and raised in Sandpoint, Idaho, so his books could be classified as American Redoubt humor. JWR met Pat a few years ago, and Pat very kindly autographed his entire battered collection of Pat’s books. Some of these books had been so well-loved that the pages were falling out of their bindings. …

Notes for Sunday – August 24, 2014

On August 24th, 410, Rome was overrun by the Visigoths, an event that symbolized the fall of the Western Roman Empire. This is a moment in history that we would do well to remember. An empire that ruled the world was corrupted from the inside to the point that they could not defend themselves from a much weaker enemy. This could conceivably be the beginning of the dark, middle ages. o o o Today, we present another entry for Round 54 of the SurvivalBlog non-fiction writing contest. The $12,100+ worth of prizes for this round include: First Prize: A Gunsite …

Notes for Saturday – August 23, 2014

August 23rd is the anniversary of the declaration of the independent state of “Franklin” in Eastern Tennessee by the settlers there in 1784. Unfortunately, the Continental Congress rejected it, so the state of Franklin never became a reality. Today, in 1833, Britain abolished slavery in the colonies and 700,000 slaves were freed. I can’t help but wonder had Abraham Lincoln allowed the political process to run its course, as it did in England, and slavery was abolished by the will of the people, as it would have been, rather than executive order, would we have the racial tensions we have …

A recent web search showed that the words “free press credentials” mostly resulted in listings for a few commercial sites that are selling flaky press passes. Sadly, our own spin-off site, The Constitution First Amendment Press Association (CFAPA.org), which provides free press credentials that are legitimate didn’t even make Google’s first page of search results. 🙁 To cure this under-representation, any readers who have personal web sites or blogs are encouraged to make a mention CFAPA.org, with a link, and include the words “free press credentials” in their post. Many thanks, folks! On a related note: Police in Ferguson, Missouri …

I’m officially calling an end to my 4-year running experiment on gardening this week. I’m not calling it quits on gardening, but I have now discovered which of the methods tried is best for our location. In the last four years, I have tried nearly every form of gardening that was practical. The winner, by far, is the method outlined in “How to Grow More Vegtables than you ever thought possible on less land than you can imagine” by John Jeavons. This method, while physically intensive, produces an amazing crop from very small spaces. Anything planted in one of these …

My sons and I just wrapped up watching the “Mad Max” Trilogy (with appropriate fast-forwarding through certain parts) and thoroughly enjoyed them. That, of course, started the discussion of the much-anticipated Mad Max 4 “Fury Road”. We ended up finding this 4-part YouTube video of leaked pictures, concept art, and behind-the-scenes photographs. It’s kind of dated, but perhaps you will find them as entertaining as we did. YouTube Video: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4 o o o Today, we present another entry for Round 54 of the SurvivalBlog non-fiction writing contest. The $12,400+ worth of prizes …
