SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. If you have chickens, you are going to want to see the videos on preserving eggs in today’s edition.
Farmers’ Markets are Racist
Two professors at San Diego State University have now criticized the whiteness of farmers’ markets in a chapter of “Just Green Enough”. From reader H.L. “Just when I thought that professors could not say anything more insane, I found this article. Of course, it is The Republic of Kalifornia, but more and more younger people want Socialism, and of course, they have been infected by schools, and their parents are clueless how to raise a child that loves freedom, and really understands the free market, and the evils of socialism/communism. I remember that in Germany of WWII, the teachers were requiring the school children to ‘rat’ on their parents if their parents did not like Hitler! Think it cannot happen here? Something like it is already happening. Some teachers suggesting that children need to “tell” someone in authority if their parents do something they do not like. Examples vary. Children “required” in some schools to answer on paper very intrusive questions about their home lives. The government wants to be in everyone’s life. George Orwell’s ‘1984’ is becoming our reality! We need to get our heads out of the sand.”
Preserving Eggs
Reader J.C. sent in this video on preserving your eggs using water glassing. This is a long standing historical method that is easy and effective. There are several different water glassing mediums, but this video show you how to use readily available hydrated lime (also known as pickling lime and slaked lime). There is also a followup video produced eight months later about those same eggs.
Cold Weather Handout
Reader M.S. sent in this link to the U.S. Army Cold Weather Student Handout. If you are living, plan to live, or just travel through some of the colder regions where the temperature consistently stays below freezing, this PDF needs to be in your preps and you need to read, study, and practice the survival techniques in it. I was recently reminded how quickly things can get bad. My shop is detached from the house and I regularly walk between the two without a jacket. Yesterday, at 0400 hours, I left the keys in the shop, closing the door behind me. This locked me out of the house and the shop with the temperature hovering around 20 degrees. It didn’t take long to realize I had to wake someone else up in the house or I was going to be in real trouble.
Is Your Canned Food Spoiled?
How long have your canned foods been in your storage? Even if you regularly rotate through them, it’s not unusual to find a lost can every now and then. I’ve even had cans that were well within their expiration dates go bad. Can you recognize the signs? Reader DSV sent in this quick article on 10 easy signs you shouldn’t eat that.
Reach Out and Touch Someone
The U.S. Army has officially canceled its search for an off-the-self 7.62mm Interim Combat Service Rifle to replace the standard-issue M4 carbine. They have re-prioritized funding for the Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) to replace both the M4 and the M249. Both programs are focused on getting a 7.62mm weapon back inside the squad showing that the Army recognizes the shortcomings of the 5.56mm round, especially when it comes to penetrating body armor. Thanks to JMC for the link.
Refugee Admissions
It would appear that Trump is following through on another campaign promise. The data shows that refugee admissions into the U.S. has seen a reduction of 70 percent in the first year. In addition, the percentage of the refugees who are Christian is up. This is an important factor when it comes to refugees integrating into society. Thanks to D.B. for the link.

Please send your news tips to HJL. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who watch news that is important to them. Due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” news. We often “get the scoop” on news that is most likely ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!
About the Farmers Market:
I once read a book by James Clavell titled The Children’s Story, a quick read and will totally show you how the school system can change your children. It scared the pants off me, having worked with kids in school I could see just how easy it can be done.
I suggest people adopt a security item I use now: a small locking keybox mounted inconspicuously. You can change the 4 digit combination easily, they are manual (non-electric). Put one outside by your shop.
Ours have saved our bacon several times. Additionally, I can let someone know where it is and what current digits are to access the key, when needed.
HJL,
I do like the 7.62 round as well.
For me in terms of costs, would mean substituting my 556 AR, for a 7.62, or .308 round; in a AR platform.
So be it, and God bless

The Children’s Story
A dramatization of this short story was broadcast “…without commercial interruption…” in 1982.
It’s available to watch free on the Internet.
A caveat… it was broadcast on televisionprogramming. Indeed, during the introduction, the actor clearly calls it ‘programming’.
This was an excellent video on preserving eggs without refrigeration, very informative and well presented. This is definitely something that will come in handy when the Schumer Hits The Fan. Trekker Out
