The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “JWR”.  Today, we focus on California’s 1862 Megastorm.

A Sequel to California’s 1862 Megastorm?

Here’s what a ‘very likely’ sequel to California’s 1862 megastorm would look like. Here are two quote:s

“That singular storm, called the Great Flood, unleashed 10 feet of rain and snow over California in 43 days at the end of 1861 and the start of 1862. The precipitation formed an inland sea that stretched 300 miles down the Central Valley and as much as 60 miles wide. At least 21 people died, the state declared bankruptcy, and, Cox says, ‘it drowned so many cattle’ that California changed from a predominantly ranching economy to the agricultural salad bowl we know today.”
and,
“But even the most humdrum ARkStorm predictions are hair-rising. One in four buildings in the state would flood. Rivers would swell and even coastal communities would be inundated, as floodwaters rushed to the shore too fast for the ocean to absorb them—a situation similar to the long, slow leak Houston saw after Hurricane Harvey. The biggest challenge is the sheer number of people in the path of destruction. The 1860 census recorded just 379,994 in California; today there are almost 40 million. The USGS team estimates at least 1.5 million people would need to evacuate, and still there would be “a substantial loss of life.””

Connecticut: Sandy Hook Lawsuits Can Proceed Against Gun Makers

Reader H.L. sent this: Anti-Gunners Win Case To Potentially Bankrupt Gun Manufacturers in the Court RoomH.L. had these interesting comments:

“As this was being reported on my local television station , I told my sister, “This is awful, and the Politicians will immediately want to further erode our 2nd Amendment Rights!”  Our state has two of the most leftist senators, and the hue and cry is loud!

For months I surfed the Internet trying to find news about the shooter’s background, mother, father, sibling, etc. and his school history.  Much of what I found was not reported by the “left” on TV or internet, or our State Police.  After many months it was confirmed that he had a long term very troubled history in school and in life!  Sadly, his mother thought that by giving him firearms and the two of them going to the range, would help him to mature. Though by this time, she had pulled him from school.  Every photo I have seen of him indicates to me that he was very mentally disturbed.  His eyes were wild!

The last three months of his life, he stayed in his bedroom with black plastic bags over the window. She rarely saw him. She was way in over her head. The parents had divorced some years back and his Dad and brother lived in New Jersey.  Loving a child is so important, but a parent cannot and must not hide their head in the sand about serious mental and/or personality disorders!  Not trying to help the child, and if not possible, keep dangerous items out of their hands is only common sense, and it protects everyone else – hopefully.

It is much the same as not keeping a vicious animal that you know is vicious around other people.  What you do with your own life is your business, but with truly dangerous animals or people all caution must be used to at least protect other people and lives.  So, here in Connecticut the good people suffer — namely those that want to own various firearms – which should never have happened. This is going to be the ‘gift that keeps on giving’, a very negative gift.”

“Alpha Guardian has recalled around 1,250 Stack-On Sentinel gun safes due to lock failure and injury hazard, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.”

“A bolt malfunction can cause the safe to open without the use of a key or combination, allowing access to any firearms stored inside, posing an injury hazard. (Source: CPSC)”

  2. The inland sea formed by the storms of 1861-62 reminds me of the description of such a sea in the book Lucifer’s Hammer. Perhaps the authors took inspiration from this real-life event.

    Carry on

  3. RE: face recognition. If your drivers license is REAL ID compliant (has a gold star) and/or you do not live in a state that does not allow you to get a non-photo license (not having the photo taken at all, that is), then you will never be able to “beat facial recognition.” If you want to have any chance of keeping your biometric markers out of government databases, you need to move to Washington or Wisconsin (or Pennsylvania, but you have to be in a recognized religious group and still get permission) and get the photo waiver.

  4. One of the things that wasn’t reported about the Sandy Hook murderer was that years before the attack he had made threats against the school and a family friend had reported him to the police. They did nothing, making it very similar to the case in Parkland where multiple warnings were completely ignored by Law Enforcement.
