Hugh’s Quote of the Day:

What possible “good news” could there ever be about nuclear destruction coming to America, whether in the form of dirty bombs, terrorist nukes, or ICBM’s from afar? In a word, they are all survivable, at least for the vast majority of American families, IF they know what to do beforehand and have made even the most modest of preparations. Tragically, though, most Americans today won’t give much credence to this good news, much less seek out such vital life-saving instruction, as they have been jaded by our culture’s pervasive myths of nuclear un-survivability. Most people think that if nukes go …
After completion of the five-book Patriots novel series, I’m now drafting the first book in a new multi-novel series, which has not yet been named. I should mention that this new novel series does not tie in to the storyline of the Patriots novels. It will be considered science fiction, since it will be set 40 years in the future, and will include some anticipated technology developments. The first book in this series may be released in late 2015 or early 2016. To give this upcoming novel series the same level of authenticity as the Patriots series, I would greatly …

I only post one reminder each year about Ten Cent Challenge subscriptions, and this is it. Unlike the whining leftist hand-wringers at PBS, I don’t do endless pledge drives. I depend on my readers to help pay the bills to keep SurvivalBlog up and running. Our web hosting on a dedicated server costs $650 per month, and our local ISP bill is $135 per month. We also have a salaried Managing Editor and other expenses including liability insurance, phone bills, computer hardware, software, accounting, subscriptions, writing contest prizes, and so forth. My appeal is simple: If you feel that you …
Note from HJL: The following is the first in a series of articles on retreat locales from JWR’s eldest son, Jonathan Rawles. The series will focus initially on top retreat states, then address specific regions in each state. Idaho has long been considered a mecca for the survivalist, prepper, and for every strain of independence-loving individual. The attractions are clear. Idaho remains one of the freest and safest places in the world. Geographically, Idaho can be split in two. The upper half of the state is largely rugged and mountainous, while the southern end is basin and range country similar …
I always liked the line that states, “Just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean that someone isn’t out to get you.” These days, in addition to physically trying to “get” you, there are also those who are trying to virtually get you by stealing your information for misuse. There are those who might want to wipe out everything with an EMP event so that not only do you not get to use your own stuff, you can’t even get a backup from someone else. It could be a foreign government, a criminal consortium, or even your own government doing the deed. …
I invented the recipe for Merry Morning Muffins to give people an emotionally cheering, gobble-em-down breakfast muffin recipe that was extremely high in protein, nutrients of all kinds, and fiber. They’re low carb, very low gluten, and contain no white flour at all. All of the ingredients can be kept as long-term storage food. Fortunately, children have no idea that these muffins are healthy and good for them. Tell them “Just take one” and then leave the room…. How often do you get to feel stuffed with virtue while you’re stuffing yourself with muffins? Ingredients: 2 cups plain wheat germ …
Hugh, While mostly correct, the light provided to chickens and other egg-laying birds (ducks, geese) should be either full spectrum light for twelve hours per day or an incandescent bulb all the time. Should you place birds in 24 hours of full spectrum lighting, they will damage their reproductive system and stop laying after only a year or two at most. I’ve got one hen who has been laying an egg every other day for seven years now, even in the dead of winter. Also, during winter, change their feed from highly-processed laying feed (crumbles or pellets) to a natural …
