The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. Of note today  is the survival shotgun. this looks like a handy tool.

Survival Shotgun

Reader W.W. sent in this video reviewing the Chiappa X-Caliber Survival Shotgun. This is basically the old M6 survival shotgun, but instead of a .410 and .22 barrel, you get a 12 ga and .22 barrel. Then they add a series of pistol adapters which are drop in barrel bushings that will allow the shotgun to fire a variety of pistol ammunition as well. It’s a neat concept. Though it is a break-open single-shot type of weapon, so you don’t get a high rate of fire. However, the pistol adapters make it so you can fire just about any caliber of round that you might find laying around.

Flood Recovery Advice

In this Video, The American Gunsmithing Institute’s (AGI) president Gene Kelly, provides immediate Flood Recovery Triage Advice for Firearms owners to prevent further damage to their guns.. Please share this information with others to help the victims of the storms recover their firearms. Our thoughts and concerns are with the People of Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Caribbean Islands and all others that affected. May God Protect and Bless them.

Refugee Status

When you bugout without a destination, you are a refugee – especially when you do not have your preps with you. Reader L.N. sent in this news interview with some residents of a refugee tent city in Port Arthur. While the resident claims to be satisfied and the news media works to put a positive spin, there are some issues that bother me. In an attempt to stop a repeat of the refugee issues of hurricane Katrina, the residence of this tent city are basically under a police state. Not even the news crew is allowed near the tents and all of the residents are wearing wristbands and have a 10pm curfew.

Doing Vs. Talking

Reader P.S. sent in this short article from the Brushbeater blog. The article can be summed up with this statement:

“Get out there and do it, whatever it is. Stop making it a hobby and start making it a lifestyle. Take care of home and hearth along with your close ones, and don’t forget those close by. Even if you think they’re a lost cause, people will surprise you, with a lot more folks into this prepper thing than you realize- with a lot of folks not calling it that. You can learn from them, and they you.”

Internet of Things

The ‘internet of things’ is sending us back to the Middle Ages. Smart, Internet connected devices are becoming ubiquitous. But do we really own these devices? By owning them, I mean do we own not just the device, but also the information that these devices know about us? The companies that produce these devices will generally sell you the hardware, but they retain ownership of the software. The issue of property control has a long history and what we are seeing today smacks of a high tech medieval Europe where the serfs own nothing.

DQ Sign

Reader D.S. sent in this article on a Christian Wisconsin Dairy Queen owner. Having has his fill of social justice warriors, he put them on notice with a sign that should trigger into needing psychological help:

“This restaurant is politically incorrect. We have been known to say ‘Merry Christmas, Happy Easter (and) God Bless America. We salute and honor the flag, give thanks to our troops, police officers and firefighters, give thanks for the USA and give free sundaes to veterans on veterans day.”

We like this store!

Hurricane Health Crises

As is typical with flooding crises, the health crises now follow. The storm sewers have been flooded out and the standing water and mud is now becoming a toxic stew. Widespread infection serious enough to cause hospitalization is happening in Naples. One man has already lost his leg while others have died from complications. Those with compromised immune systems and/or open wounds/sores are most at risk

News Tips:

Please send your news tips to HJL. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who watch news that is important to them. Due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” news. We often “get the scoop” on news that is most likely ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!

  1. Re: Refugee Status,
I have compassion for the elderly persons effected by the hurricanes. However I have no compassion for the others who became refugees from the hurricanes.

For the $600.00 they spent on the latest and greatest smart phone they could of purchased a game cart, 2 7 gallon water jugs and 2 empty 5 gallon buckets for each family member .

1 bucket being filled with old clothes and toilet paper, the other bucket being filled with shelf stable foods such as canned beef stew, tuna, dried soups a metal bowl, spoon and cup.

We as tax payers should not have a pay for the care of stupid people.

  2. Stupid people and jerks grow older too. There lies the dilemma for those of us that want to fight the inner misanthrope…how to discern the difference. My gauge is hand up not hand out when we are able and that is further refined by how it affects our trusted group.

  3. Hugh,

As for shotguns I really feel the 590A1 is the way to go for survival shotguns. Dual extractors, thickened barrel; and the only gun to survive the “US Army torture test for shotguns”.
