SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “JWR”. Today, we focus on gun ownership in California.
The Murderous Malware of the Middle East
Reader “F.” forwarded us this from MIT Technology Review: Triton is the world’s most murderous malware, and it’s spreading. Here is the article’s teaser: “The rogue code can disable safety systems designed to prevent catastrophic industrial accidents. It was discovered in the Middle East, but the hackers behind it are now targeting companies in North America and other parts of the world, too.”
Hard Lessons: Hurricane Florence
Reader C.F. recommended this article: Hard Lessons: Hurricane Florence. Here is a key quote:
“In the wake of Hurricanes Florence and Michael, a few things do become clear. First and foremost: if you decide to evacuate, make every effort to leave early. We’re a coastal community in a state defined by a large number of sizable rivers. Every path to safety led over a bridge or six and the roadways got crowded quickly. Gas was available, but lines were occasionally lengthy as folks rushed to get on the road. This got worse during that brief period when we were anticipating a Category 4 landfall…”

Despite Tougher Laws, Twice as Many Gun Owners in California
DSV sent us this: Report: California Saw Huge Increase in Gun Ownership Over Last Decade Despite Strict Gun Laws. Here is a snippet: “What those data show is that, as of 2019, there are more than 2.5 million gun owners in California, compared to fewer than a million in 2008. That figure translates to about 8 percent of Californian adults owning guns, compared to 3.4 percent in 2008—a more than two-fold increase, even when adjusting for population.”
Admiral Warns About South China Sea Buildup
At Zero Hedge: US Admiral Warns About ‘Hazardous’ Military Buildup In South China Sea . Here is a pericope:
“‘It’s a hazard to trade flows, the commercial activity, the financial information that flows on cables under the South China Sea, writ large,’ Davidson added.
As Bloomberg pointed out, Davidson’s comments appeared to assuage US allies’ concerns about a possible US pullout from the region, which have intensified thanks to President Trump’s isolationist rhetoric.
Davidson’s comments are the latest from a senior U.S. official seeking to reassure allies in Southeast Asia of the American commitment to what Washington refers to as the Indo-Pacific region. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo last week in Manila assured the Philippines that a defense treaty would apply if its vessels or planes are attacked in the South China Sea.”
Gavin Seim Documents a Felony Setup Conspiracy
The latest video from erstwhile congressional candidate and now expat Gavin Seim: They Filed Fake Meth Charges Against Me. JWR’s Comments: Since I’m also a high profile patriot activist and I’ve been repeatedly libeled and targeted by the Southern Poverty Law Center, I would greatly appreciate it if any SurvivalBlog reader who has a subscription to a background check services would do some checks on my full name: James Wesley, Rawles (more likely: “James Wesley Rawles” or “James W. Rawles” in their records.) Many Thanks!
SurvivalBlog Archive USB Sticks: Running Low
The first batch of 1,000 of the SurvivalBlog 2005-2018 Archive Waterproof 16 GB USB sticks sold out in just five weeks. The second batch of just 550 is selling rapidly, and is running low. When I last checked, there were 320 of the second batch remaining. This may be our final batch of this year’s edition, so order yours, soon. It is noteworthy that many folks place order for two or three of them at a time.
Lowering the Voting Age to 16?
Several readers sent us this, at The Hill: Dem lawmaker introduces amendment to lower voting age to 16 in federal elections. JWRs’ Comments: The Democrats have clearly gone schizophrenic. The same folks who claim that a 18, 19, or 20 year-old lacks the maturity to buy a beer, buy a pack of smokes, own a handgun, or own a Ruger Mini-14 also claim that people even younger people somehow have the maturity, wisdom, and discernment to guide our nation’s government? They can’t have it both ways. Either congress should raise the voting and draft age to 21, or lower the age of legal possession of all alcohol, tobacco, or firearms to 18–to match the current voting and military draft eligibility age. Oh, and they should make the age of consent match that, as well. ‘Nuff said.
Shipping Delays: Shelves Bare at Hawaii Stores
“Shipping delays between Hawaii and the mainland have left some grocery store shelves empty on Oahu, officials said.
Officials with Honolulu-based Matson Inc. confirmed Tuesday that deliveries have fallen behind schedule because of a combination of bad weather and mechanical problems on ships, Hawaii News Now reported.
Some residents on Oahu have taken photos in recent days, showing grocery stores with bare dairy sections.”
