The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. A reminder to pay attention to OPSEC today.

OPSEC

Reader D.S. sent in this reminder about maintaining OPSEC at all times. Thieves in Huntersville, North Carolina have been scouting parking lots for NRA decals in local car thefts. The local sheriff is saying it’s a good idea to remove any form of gun or hunting sticker from your car because the sticker alerts potential thieves that you may have a firearm. While most of the time, a person with a concealed carry will probably have that firearm on their person, there are certain places that you just can’t take it (bank, post office, court buildings) and the thief will expect you to leave the firearm in the car. Even if you have a lock box that you keep it in, the thief won’t know that until he has already broken into your car.

Sweden’s Preparedness

Reader M.R. sent us an English copy of Sweden’s new civil defense and preparedness brochure, “If Crisis or War Comes”. The brochure has some good, simplistic information in it on preparedness. Of particular note is the civil defense portion though. The brochure makes it clear that the population has a significant responsibility to work with the government in maintaining the security of the country. I particularly like the callout on page 12: “If Sweden is attacked by another country, we will never give up. All information to the effect that resistance is to cease is false.” This is obviously targeted at a military invasion, but I wonder if the government would be surprised if the population took that tactic over the current Muslim immigrant invasion that is destroying the country?

Clearing a Bullet Over Bolt Stoppage

Reader T.J. sent in this video with Reid Henrichs of Valor Ridge giving a demonstration of clearing a bullet over bolt stoppage on an AR-15. This is a fairly rare stoppage on that platform and I’ve not actually ever experienced this particular form of stoppage. In a normal stoppage, you simply tap the magazine and rack the action, but that will not clear this form of stoppage. When you have this form of stoppage, you will immediately feel the problem. His method is simple and effective and worth practicing because you can clear it quickly while in the firefight. You don’t have to be out of the game.

Free Medicine

Patriot Nurse has a neat video on identifying medicinal plants that most people call weeds. You will often find these medicinal herbs in areas that are unkempt and overgrown, even in cities. This is very useful information for the prepper to know and practice. While modern medicines are often more effective than these herbs, you may not always have access to those. This is a perishable skill so you need to practice finding these plants and learn where to find these plants.

Kill or be Killed

Reader S.M. sent in this article from The South African. ITV is airing it’s divisive land expropriation feature titled “It’s kill or be killed”. ITV News Correspondent, John Ray, traveled across the country, meeting those who claim ancient heritage ownership of the land and those who are taking up arms to protect their property. The racial animosity in the country is growing and the main stream media is largely silent on the issue, preferring instead to focus on what outfit Melania Trump is wearing or whether or not it is appropriate for a divorced woman to wear white at her royal wedding. South Africa is a very real example of what happens when racism runs rampant in the communities and the government caves in to the pressure.

Homeschooling

Reader DSV sent in this email that she got from “Ron Paul Curriculum”:

This cheered me up. Rush Limbaugh posted this on his website.

“Have you seen the former education secretary in the Obama administration, this guy Arne Duncan, he’s out there saying that until we get this school shooting stuff fixed, until we’ve gotten guns out of the hands of people, parents need to start boycotting schools.

“Hey, Mr. Duncan, you may not know this, but parents started doing that a long time ago. It’s called homeschooling. And more and more parents are boycotting the public school system each and every week in this country. These eggheads are so, so far behind things.”

This lays it on the line. Parents don’t have to wait for terrorist-immune public schools. They don’t have to wait for teachers carrying guns. They can keep their children in a safe environment starting tomorrow: at home.

A parent may think this: “But I don’t know how to teach my kids!” No problem. My site’s instructors know how to teach them. They do the heavy academic lifting. To find out more.

Yes, you can do it too! This is just one of many different options out there to help parents homeschool their kids. Get them out of the progressive/liberal indoctrination centers public school!

Please send your news tips to HJL. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who watch news that is important to them. Due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” news. We often “get the scoop” on news that is most likely ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!

  1. Jack Spirko makes a neat case that it shouldn’t be called public school that’s a propaganda name. It should be called gov’t school. Public can’t go in there. Public isn’t in charge in there and so on.

Thank you M.R. I looked for an English translation when I read about this Swedish publication. Didn’t find one, then without trying again ran into this today on my favorite blog. I’m sure many people like me were wondering what was in there.

  2. I am a member of the NRA and proud of it. But, I never have felt comfortable about placing their stickers on anything that I own. Why advertise to the world that one might find guns here? I can’t be home all the time. So, I never place those decals on my car or home. They also sent me a plaque that says “This is not a gun free zone.” I placed it on a cabinet in my bedroom. Only my wife and I and trusted family members are ever allowed in my bedroom. So, I feel that is a good place for this plaque! Remeber theold WW2 saying: “Loose lips sink ships!”

  3. I’m a Benefactor member of the NRA, that’s several levels over life member and proudly display the fact with a decal and a license plate frame.

I understand your concerns in high crime areas about people breaking in to your cars, that problem doesn’t exist around here except maybe in the city.

I can guarantee you my chances of getting car jacked are reduced, first with the deterrent of the stickers and second with the actual deterrent.

Plus maybe someone will be reminded to join the NRA and help keep the Guvment at bay.

    1. Montana Rancher. I live in a freedom state, deep in the hillbilly redneck zone. Everyone has a gun and carries hand guns, most conceal carry but open carry is legal and some do. There is an outdoor shooting range four miles from my farm. On any day except Sunday morning, when all us rednecks are in church, there are large caliber hand guns, shotguns and real (not liberal defined) automatic rifles being fired. Almost everyone has a “We don’t dial 911” sign and there are “Warning, you may encounter US flags, armed citizens, the Lord’s Prayer and loud country music” signs with real bullet holes in them nailed to trees. There are also Sherriff Association and Volunteer Fire Fighter decals on cars. However, there are few NRA decals or signs; not sure why. Possibly, the annual fee is a little high for hillbillies?

  4. Was going through the Canadian border and the customs official gave me significant grief over the NRA sticker on my window. Big hassle. That said the people in line in front of me were Canadians from Alberta and I can’t know for sure but he appeared to hassle them quite a bit about something as well. And other Canadian border officials have given me absolutely no trouble and are usually friendly and quick.

That said while I am an NRA member the sticker was placed on the car by the previous owner and I will probably scrape it off. I think all stickers on cars illicit unwanted responses from someone at some time. I am surprised how many people get ramped up for I don’t know what reason over the various stickers showing a stick figure or zombie figure or whatever rendition of a family and maybe their pets. I am of the opinion you express nothing on your cars or clothing.

    1. When I entered Canada through Idaho I was wearing full military woodland cammo and the female attendant pretty much freaked out. I was required to park my truck and go inside. Seeing their distrust in me I volunteered to show them my concealed carry permit thinking they would relax knowing that I had been checked out by the FBI. WRONG! I was then questioned and bodily searched. They also searched my vehicle and dumped out my luggage. There they found two empty holsters. I knew better than to carry a pistol in to Canada so I had left it on the American side before entering. When they couldn’t get me to confess to hiding a pistol in my truck somewhere they threatened to bring a dog to sniff for it. I told them to bring their #@&% dog. Finally they gave up and let me enter. When I came back a few hours later the American border guard said “I heard they gave you a hard time a little bit ago.” So will I ever go to Canada again? Not on your life. The people there aren’t citizens, they’re subjects. And on a similar note, I later talked to a man who was from Canada who was about 55 years old and he told me that he never knew anyone who actually owned a hand gun. Wow!

  5. Sweden.
“If Sweden is attacked by another country, we will never give up. All information to the effect that resistance is to cease is false.”

Certainly you asked the right question which is mine; What about the hordes of 7th century barbarians already inside the gate?

  6. My last truck had four US Army Infantry Division patch stickers, Jump Wings, Air Assault Wings, Scuba Flag, Pilots Wings and several other Army unit stickers, and an NRA patch. Nobody ever bothered it. But then again, I live in the South. Your mileage may vary.

  7. As a Ham , I learned early on that putting my call sign on a license plate or vinyl lettering on a window translates to “expensive radio equipment inside.”

    1. @Ace,
I got my callsign on a plate right before I sold the car. Here, the plate stays with the owner, not the car. Now I have a nice license callsign plate sitting right above my radios at home 🙂
The time left on the registration transferred to the new plate for the new (to me) car.

  8. Comments on another site regarding the NRA sticker car theft issue: A few people suggested that “left wing” stickers on liberals’ cars be covered with NRA stickers just to see what happens.
Of course I’m not suggesting that anyone do this. NO! NEVER!
    .
My vehicles are virgin. Nothing on them except what the state requires.

  9. Not related to this thread, but I’ve noticed several double posts of the last several days
Don’t know if it’s fumble fingers (like mine) or a glitch in the software.

  10. RE: the statement “…there are certain places that you just can’t take it (bank, post office, court buildings)

Specifically, about banks – I had heard this, so about 20 years ago I wrote to the NRA legal staff and asked if there were any federal banking laws or regulations that prohibited legal armed carry inside a bank (I specified “legal” and referenced state-issued CWP and state laws permitting open carry or not requiring a government-issued permit for concealed carry).

The response several weeks later was that NRA legal staff could find no law or banking regulation disallowing legal carry in a bank.

I recognize some banks post their buildings with “no weapons allowed” signs, many of which comply with state laws regarding signage, many which do not (but I understand the sentiment so I do not deal with them).

Are you aware of, or in possession of, new information regarding laws or banking regulations prohibiting legal carry in banks which are not otherwise specifically posted against carry in accordance with state statute?

Unless something has changed, I am not aware of any federal prohibition against legal armed carry inside a bank.

    1. As a part of my job, I enter various banks on a frequent basis and had this conversation with a bank officer recently. I had always assumed it was not legal to carry into a bank, but he told me that it was perfectly legal.

    2. Here in Utah, I personally see a member at our Mountain America Credit Union open carrying routinely, no problem with staff or other members. Keep America Great!

  11. I deal with two financial institutions in Oklahoma, a bank and a credit union. The bank carries no signage indicating it is a gun free zone in any of their branches, but the credit union does in all of theirs. Also, there are several U.S. Post offices I enter on a weekly basis and they do not have the gun free signage displayed.

    P. S. – As a family we are planning to move to the Redoubt (SW Wyoming) within the next year. (Lord willing and the creek don’t rise)

    1. Here in MN, you can not enter a building under Federal control,( Post Office, SS Office, etc). I believe that is a Federal rule, but is for sure taught in our state permit to carry classes.

  12. RE: Concealed carry in a federal or State building;
Unless the building has (armed) security guards and/or a magnetic gate, I carry in and out freely. Do I tell? Do I advertise? Do I open carry? No, no, and no. But I carry.
