SurvivalBlog presents another edition of the Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods– a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper.
RKBA
President Donald Trump’s full remarks at NRA-ILA Leadership Forum in Atlanta. While his speech was not specific on particular gun law policies, it was encouraging. He previously mentioned that he is in favor of the Hearing Protection Act.
Columnist who defended NRA quits after being suspended. JWR’s Comment: I’m confident that a conservative network like Fox would benefit from hiring Stacy Washington!
Tactical Training
Fort Bragg released a video of a team engaged in an active shooter drill. The video underscores the importance of training. As the writer points out, the reason we train is so foolish (and costly) accidents don’t happen. I like his saying: “Remember, amateurs train until they get it right, professionals train until they don’t remember how to do it wrong.” (Warning: The second video is graphic.)
The left has lost its mind
The left continues their absurd, whining diatribes as they continue to refuse to take responsibility for their own actions. Fox news interviews Dakota Meyer on New York Magazine’s claim that the NRA benefits ISIS. This claim is the epitome of foolishness.
Don’t forget your Mother!
Have you remembered your mother for this coming Mother’s Day? Just in case you forgot or don’t know what to get a mom who preps, PantryParatus has you covered.
Survival Weapons
Robb Moffett has posted a review of an inexpensive crossbow pistol: 10 good reasons to buy 80 lb pistol crossbow and 4 bad ones not to. This could be the option for you if you live in an area where traditional firearms are restricted Robb also reminds us that InfoGalactic has an interesting unrelated article: Arrow poison
EMP
SurvivalBlog has been beating this drum for quite some time, but it’s now making the mainstream media: Congressional Expert: North Korea Prepping EMP Catastrophe Aimed At U.S. Homefront. In the words of Reader W.W. “Maybe buy some extra batteries this week.”
Now might be a good time to review some of the articles in SurvivalBlog’s archives like: A Prepper’s Guide to EMP
Clearing the City
Chicago contiues it’s downward slide into oblivion: Thousands Flee Chicago For Safer Areas Of The Country As America’s Third Largest City Becomes A Gang-Infested Wasteland. The number of murders has increased 60 percent in the last year alone. This is a city where if you are capable, you are bailing as fast as you can. Democratic, leftist progressive at it’s finest!
Re NRA benefits ISIS:
I was expecting one or the other to challenge the lie that firearms are available online without background checks.
The Ft Bragg public relations, training and safety personnel should both remove their video and retrain their staff. Fingers on triggers and curled near triggers while moving and under stress are a disaster waiting to happen. Swinging the muzzle of a gun across an instructor or observer is also very poor performance.
I am amazed anyone would not think the video is a primer on all the things to not do.
At the very least, I hope they post another video showing much improvement in the team. This video is a PR nightmare – for those who understand. However, to the vast majority, it looks just like what they see on TV.
One would be in at least as much danger from this “team” as they would from the active shooter. Just another example of an agency reducing their liability by providing “training”. How do I know? I’m a retired LEO and after Columbine we got similar “training” that basically involved us throwing ourselves at the problem sans equipment and adequate and regular follow up training. When I suggested to brass that they might consider equipping Sgt cars with much needed equipment for the responders and do more training I was told to shut up and quit being a “trouble maker”. Nope, CCW (there are no rules when it comes to your survival) and keep you head on a swivel…
I am reminded of an old saying when I was in TKD: “Practice only makes permanent. Perfect practice makes perfect.”
I’ve got to say that I am not a huge fan of the new format. And, I wish you would return to some of the previous layout. Like other commenters I have read here, I find it a bit more cumbersome to navigate (clicking back and forth to access everything). I did like the ability to scroll down easily to view each item, article, link, etc. But I also like the ability to comment and see all the comments in one string.
However, with that said, I will not be leaving SurvivalBlog (like I saw some write) for the simple fact that I believe SurvivalBlog….it’s founder and editors… bring to bear the most relevant and timely information and sources for survival and preparedness-related information far better than I have seen anywhere else.
Thank you for what you do.
@Jay, What many don’t understand is that much of the new format is driven by the SEO requirements of *oogle. If the format doesn’t get changed to match what they want, *oogle suppresses returns on searches. Even though we have far more relevant information with many more articles on subjects, people don’t know because we didn’t do what *oogle wanted. As I write this, I have a song running through my head (but with slightly different words than the original): “We fought the *oogle and the.. *oogle won…”
Regardless, the content will remain the same high-quality, original content that it has always been. it’ll just be presented a bit different than people are used to.
Except for comments – that’s just SurvivalBlog giving voice to it’s readership.
I agree. It’s much too difficult to navigate the new format. I’m not leaving either, but I dislike the change.
We are still tweaking to get *oogle’s SEO the way they want it without too much annoyance to our readers. It’s still a work in progress. Hang in there.
I have to enlarge the print to read it and it’s really hard to do on a ipad so I’ve mostly given up on SurvivalBlog.
What your seeing is the “mobile responsive” feature of the blog. This puts you in control of the print size on the blog rather than us. Under your settings, find the entry titled “General settings”. Inside that entry, you will find an option titled “Accessibility”. Open that one and you will see a setting for “Larger Text”. Enable that and pick the size of text you want.
On android, you will find “Accessibility” under the “Device” tab. Then pick “Font size” and select the size you want.
The reader has much more control over how they read the blog now.
Yes, it can be adjusted the way you describe, but that then resizes the text for everything (web pages, mail, apps, etc.). It was much easier when I could just pinch the screen to expand the text for your web page. To do what you describe just to read Survival Blog, and then set it back is a lot of “clicks”.
I’m not leaving either, but I don’t read as much or as often as I used to…it’s just to hard on the old eyes.
Also, as a side note, it makes the hair on the back of my neck bristle to think this change has been mandated by *oogle…so now *oogle gets to mandate the layout of websites?
*oogle mandates in a round-about way. If you don’t meet their requirements, they simply don’t return your site on searches, no matter how relevant the content is to the one who did the search. They are the gate-keepers of information nowadays.
Re: the left has lost its mind.
A quote from Theodore Dalrymple:
“Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, nor to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better.
When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is to co-operate with evil, and in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed.
A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.”
Hugh posted, “@Jay, What many don’t understand is that much of the new format is driven by the SEO requirements of *oogle. If the format doesn’t get changed to match what they want, *oogle suppresses returns on searches.”
While I, and prob’ly many dislike change, your explanation resonates with me Thank you for knowing and choosing WHICH BATTLE is worth fighting. God confirm your work!
