…I’m still learning. Several of the letters above are on track, others not so much. First: EMP and CME are quite different; CME poses no significant risk other than through wild swings of powerline voltage and eventual grid damage/failure. Letter: Problem Running Multiple Generators

Much to the chagrin of my wife, took the box that it was shipped in and [Faraday] lined it on the inside rather than outside with heavy aluminum foil – used spray adhesive, double layered the foil. Used the thin foam packing material to cover the foil. For closing the top of the box, had to be creative to get a good seal, wrapped the box with two 2” wen strapping. I’m more worried about a CME event than a nuclear EMP. Therefore, will ultimately store this generator (stored dry after I ran a little Sea Foam through it) in a galvanized footlocker (actually a decorative item you can sometimes find at the bedding and linen stores). I often have SurvivalBlog readers write to ask me about vacuum tube technology and its robustness in EMP and CME events, and which antique multi-band vacuum tube radios to look for. I’m also asked how to determine which models can be run on both AC and DC power. To begin, vacuum tubes are inherently “hard” to EMP and CME but not invulnerable. They are also relatively safe from lightning strikes–but again not invulnerable. Modern integrated circuits are at the opposite end of the scale for vulnerability. In essence, the smaller gates in a microcircuit, the greater its vulnerability. In recent years, chip makers have been creating chips with gates smaller than .3 microns. They are very vulnerable! Jim: After reading several articles on EMP in the form of a CME/solar flare, my understanding is that we would have hours or even days in which to prepare for such an event. Although I imagine that a massive CME would still cause damage to our electrical grid, I would also think that many homes could be disconnected from the grid and electrical equipment shielded in metal containers before the CME reached us. If we have a massive CME it could have the same EMP effects except worldwide, and at a higher V/m than any weapon could produce. Letter Re: Novel Recommendation–“Solar Flare” by Larry Burkett

…(i.e. a huge coronal mass ejection (CME) with an accompanying X-ray flare burst) is extremely low. Ian O’Neill, one of the chief debunkers of solar flares and similar threats posts at the Universe Today web site. I generally agree with him, but I don’t completely rule out the chance of a massive flare that could have EMP-like effects. Just like the often over-emphasized “magnetic pole shift.” and sudden-onset climate change threats, I personally place the CME threat way over at the far end of the threat matrix. It is the corner of the chart that I label “Extremely low likelihood in our lifetimes, but devastating if it were to occur.” My viewpoint on preparedness for a massive CME event is this: As long as we are preparing for nuclear fallout and EMP as every family should, then we are also preparing for solar flare shielding–since those preparations are nearly identical….

Steve The Obama Administration published a National Space Weather Strategy and Plan in Oct 2015. One action tasked to FEMA was the development of a Space Weather (Solar Flare/CME) planning scenario to be added to the existing 15 National Planning Scenarios. These scenarios form the skeleton of each County’s All Hazards Mitigation Plan. Once the CME scenario is published, counties will begin incorporating a CME into their plans, which are updated every five years. Forward thinking Emergency Managers are already doing this. Providing fuel for generators at pharmacies and hospitals is high on the priorities list. Check in with your County Emergency Manager to see what he/she is doing in this area….
