May 21st is the birthday of weapons designer John Douglas Pedersen. (Born 1881, died 1951.) Among other inventions, he is known as the inventor of the M1903 Springfield Pedersen Device (pictured) that converted the M1903 rifle to shoot a smaller-capacity .30 caliber cartridge, semi-automatically.
