Here is SurvivalBlog’s News From The American Redoubt. This weekly column features news stories and event announcements from around the American Redoubt region. We also mention companies of interest to preppers that are located in the region. The emphasis this week is on the Boise Gun Company Store Closing Auctions.

First off, gun-owning SurvivalBlog readers in Southwestern Idaho and Eastern Oregon should plan to attend the Boise Gun Company Nampa Store Liquidation Live Auction on Friday, April 20th. This will be the first of a series of live auctions and Internet auctions. The auction goods all come from a well-stocked business with two retail stores that sadly recently closed their doors. As with all other inventory auctions, it is wise to do plenty of research on prices. At the very minimum, bring a few mail order ammo, reloading component, and gun parts catalogs with you–so that you will be a well-informed bidder. They will be auctioning: “1,000’s of Rounds of Factory Ammunition from .50 BMG on Down, Scopes, Reloading Supplies/Powder, Leather Belts, Gun Cases, + Store Fixtures/Cases/Racks.” (You can click to expand any of the photos.) It appears that the store’s gun and magazine inventory will be sold in other auctions–most likely online.

Many folks have never heard of the little town of Atlanta, Idaho. I recently found a nice drone video showing the town, in late summer. Atlanta is a little former mining town at just over 5,000 foot elevation. It is a 40 miles drive in on winding gravel roads to get there. The population is around 300, but I suspect that figure is lower in the winter. There are still lots of patented mining claim parcels in and around the town. Atlanta town is situated in in Elmore County, Idaho, which has more than 22,000 residents. But right next door is Camas County, measuring 1,079 square miles.(A little more than half the size of Delaware.) That mostly-remote county has only 1,100 residents, 416 of whom live in the county seat of Fairfield!

Idaho Falls, in southeastern Idaho was recently hit with a damaging hail storm that prompted hundreds of insurance claims for dented cars and house roofs. The hail stones ranged from .75 inches to 1.75 inches!  I found a video clip from a part of that city where the hail was much smaller. Skip forward to the 1:30 minute mark, for the dramatic portion…

Russian Chemical Attack

Don’t believe anything you read, and only half of what you see.

The article says that Russia claims that the OPCW’s Swiss lab determined the sample to be the US agent BZ. BZ is not a nerve agent. It is the closest agent to LSD that the US weaponized in quantity, as an incapacitant. Whatever else is true, no way a good analysis could confuse it with any nerve agent. I’d believe the conspiracy theory that it was a false flag operation with western-produced Novichok before I would believe that one. BZ is not even toxic enough to be on Schedule 1 of the Chemical Weapons Convention, and it’s only on Schedule 2 because it was weaponized.

Which Penetrating Oil is Best?

Reader J.C. sent in this article that examines penetrating oils and makes a determination of which one is best. While I do not like using such light oils for lubrication of moving parts, there are times when getting just a tiny bit of lubrication into a stuck bolt can mean the difference between successful disassembly and a busted bolt. Occasionally, it can save your child’s ears from hearing those filthy words that seem to slide out of your mouth when you have busted your knuckles up. Something to keep in mind though – As good as penetrating oils are at helping to loosen stuck parts, they do not have long term protection capabilities. Do not depend on them to keep that part from getting stuck.

April 16th is the birthday of two notable novelists– J. Neil Schulman and Samuel Youd.

Agorist-Libertarian activist J. Neil Schulman (born April 16, 1953) is best known as author of the novel Alongside Night.

The late Samuel Youd (born 1922, died February 3, 2012) was the British novelist who was best known for his science fiction writings under the pseudonym John Christopher, including the survivalist novel Death of Grass (titled No Blade of Grass, in the American edition) as well as the Tripods Seriesof young adult sci-fi novel series. A fascinating man, Youd wrote prolifically, using eight pen names. He was a good friend of sci-fi novelist John Wyndham, and both of them were famous for writing what are often called cozy catastrophes.

Actor R. Lee Ermey passed away yesterday. Ermey was known far and wide as the sadistic Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Stanely Kubricks “Full Metal jacket” but I loved him best in his role in “Mail Call”. We will miss him.

Also passing away is Art Bell of the “Coast to Coast AM” show. JWR was a guest on the show several times of the last few years.

Typically, when we think about a survival situation, like TEOTWAWKI or SHTF, our minds race to food storage, defense, clean water, growing gardens, and raising livestock; often times, we forget other necessities, like good medical care and childbirth. According to the CDC, about 11,000 babies are born in the U.S. every day. If anyone in your family or group is of childbearing age, you might want to think about preparing for an out-of-hospital birth. Most people have never witnessed a “natural” or med-free birth. Therefore, they have no idea what natural birth looks like or how to prepare for it.

If you are a Bible-believing person of faith, you might also remember the verse in Matthew where Yeshua (Jesus) was speaking of the end of days and his second coming.

“For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.… let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:” – Matthew 24:7-8,17-20

Important We Prepare for Mothers and Children

If Yeshua openly foretold of these mothers, it seems mighty important that we prepare for them and their children. Unfortunately, almost everything that we have ever been told about childbirth comes from dramatic television shows and movies, designed to play on our emotions based on this sudden “emergent” event. How could I best prepare you for a true, med-free delivery in a survival situation, that would help you feel confident if the situation arose?

Preparedness Notes for Sunday – April 15, 2018

April 15th, 1912, is the anniversary of the sinking of the “unsinkable” Titanic. 1517 people lost their lives on the maiden voyage. As research into the incident has progressed over the last 100 years, it seems as if, one way or another, the ship was just going to sink. Impact with an iceberg, raging coal fires in the fuel supply, wrong turns, locked-up binoculars, weak rivets, too few lifeboats, and more. Perhaps this whole incident was really the result of man’s hubris.

Sunday April 15th, 2018 marks the 15th anniversary of Commander Zero’s blog: Notes From The Bunker. I believe that it was the original blog on individual and family preparedness. (Yes, Jerry Pournelle talked a bit about survival topics in his famous Chaos Manor blog, but that could hardly be considered a preparedness blog, per se.) Notes From The Bunker had already been up and running for two and a half years before I ever started SurvivalBlog. Consider this: 15 years in Blog Years (sort of like Dog Years), makes it an Ancient, Grizzled, and Pioneering blog. Congrats, Commander Zero!

The DHS: Acquiring a Core Competency in Tyranny

Did you see this recent news item at Forbes? Department Of Homeland Security Compiling Database Of Journalists And ‘Media Influencers’’. Hmmm… That’s interesting. The contract will be for “DHS Media Monitoring Services.”  Ah, that sounds suitably mundane. But digging deeper into the original FedBizOpps announcement to read the Statement of Work (SOW), I noticed that it begins with:

1.) Core competencies. Introduce your company’s core competencies and relate those to the specific needs of the attached SOW.

That gave me a laugh. How does one describe a Core Competency in Snooping?  Or a Core Competency in Tyranny?

I see that they want to contract with a company that to start has these abilities:

    • Ability to track > 290,000 global news sources
    • Ability to track online, print, broadcast, cable, radio, trade and industry publications, local sources, national/international outlets, traditional news sources, and social media
    • Ability to track media coverage in > 100 languages, including Arabic, Chinese and Russian. Translation function to instantly translate these articles to English.
    • Ability to create up to 20 searches with each unlimited keywords
    • Unlimited coverage per search (no cap on coverage)
    • Ability to change the searches at keywords at any given time
    • Ability to create unlimited data tracking, statistical breakdown, and graphical analyses on any coverage on an ad-hoc basis

With all of their handy-dandy parameters and deep archives that never forget, this database tool will be able to constantly monitor individual trade journalist and bloggers. It could certainly watch for their use of certain key words or phrases. And presumably, if they ever used the, ahem, wrong words, then they could be flagged for action.  End result:  Something much worse than a traditional Ban List or Round-Up List. Instead, the DHS National Protection and Programs Directorate will have a database that constantly watches the article topics and phrasing used by hundreds of thousands of journalists.  And if any of them ever use the wrong words, then they could effectively self-select their names for a constantly-updated Action List.

Danish Television Series

A new Danish television series that will start airing on May 4th looks to be pretty fascinating: The Rain. The series picks up six years after a brutal virus wipes out most of Scandinavia’s population. Two siblings join a band of young survivors and the adventure begins. Lately, Netflix has been pushing the SJW movement through the series and movies that they have been picking up and I would expect that since this one is from Europe, it will be no different. Perhaps the telling of the stories will make up for the obvious SJW problems. I plan on giving at least the first episode a chance.

Seneca on the Good, the Honorable, and Virtue

“Your letter roamed, over several little problems, but finally dwelt upon this alone, asking for explanation: “How do we acquire a knowledge of that which is good and that which is honourable?” In the opinion of other schools, these two qualities are distinct; among our followers, however, they are merely divided.

This is what I mean: Some believe the Good to be that which is useful; they accordingly bestow this title upon riches, horses, wine, and shoes; so cheaply do they view the Good, and to such base uses do they let it descend. They regard as honorable that which agrees with the principle of right conduct – such as taking dutiful care of an old father, relieving a friend’s poverty, showing bravery on a campaign, and uttering prudent and well-balanced opinions. We, however, do make the Good and the honorable two things, but we make them out of one: only the honorable can be good; also, the honorable is necessarily good. I hold it superfluous to add the distinction between these two qualities, inasmuch as I have mentioned it so many times. But I shall say this one thing – that we regard nothing as good which can be put to wrong use by any person. Editors’ Prepping Progress

To be prepared for a crisis, every Prepper must establish goals and make long-term and short-term plans. Steadily, we work on meeting our prepping goals. In this column, the SurvivalBlog editors review their week’s prep activities. They also often share their planned prep activities for the coming week. These range from healthcare and gear purchases to gardening, property improvements, and food storage. This is something akin to our Retreat Owner Profiles, but written incrementally and in detail, throughout the year. We always welcome you to share your own successes and wisdom in the Comments. Dear SurvivalBlog Readers,
The snow finally receded to point that I was able to get into the woods here at the Rawles Ranch and start cutting firewood. With the heavy snow this winter there were so many downed trees that I won’t even have to cut any of the remaining dead standing trees.

We also re-positioned a couple of our cedar plank raised beds. And then it started to rain, and rain, and rain, three days of it, thusfar. And there is more rain predicted until Tuesday. I’ve heard that on the east side of the Great Divide, the precipitation will be in the form of snow.  There could be 2+ feet of Spring Snow in parts of the Midwest and and the northeast. Welcome to the Grand Solar Minimum, folks! Call Al Gore, because we’ll need all the Global Warming we can get!

Avalanche Lily Reports: Earlier this week I did some roto-tilling in the garden in anticipation of planting some store-bought onion sets and my own indoor-sprouted broccoli seedlings. We will also be planting the seed potatoes that we saved from last year. The shady part of our garden plot still has patches of snow 3-to-8 inches deep. I got a kick out of plowing the edge of this snow under as I was making the turns. Take that, you snow! We’re going to beat you yet!
