Sweet Spot For the 21st Century With Calibers Beating .308- Part 3, by Alpine Evader

Yesterday, in part two of this “sweet spot” series, I moved beyond telling about my high altitude survival group and our plans and I began telling about my loadout long-term results and recommendations. I’ll continue with this by recommending some ammo.

115 Grain 6.8 Ammo

You’ll find that 115 grain 6.8 SPC Sellier & Belliot (S&B) ammo just got undercut by 115 grain American Eagle; both are about $0.62 per round. 6.8 ball ammo will crush cinder blocks within 200 yards far more effectively than any 5.56 ammo. That’s true even if you include green-tip SLAP rounds out of either a short or long barreled rifle. Try it out yourself on a few cinder blocks and tell me I’m wrong.

I find that 6.8 SPC consistently provides about 50% more sectional density than the best 5.56mm semi-auto round. And within 300 yards, it drops CXP2 game up to black bear size with a single hit, consistently DRT (dear right there). You get better smackdown than 75 gr. 5.56mm and don’t have to buy new ammo carrying MOLLE gear. You get more power close with shorter barrels than 6.5 Grendel. If you’re going to have to go inside a house, 6.8 at 16” or below is your friend.

The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. More reasons why you really want to get your kids out of public school are in the news today. This type of reprehensible behavior is becoming almost a daily occurrence in the news cycle.

Socialism

Reader H.L. sent in the link to this article that accurately describes the relationship between socialism and a ruling oligarchy. the idiots who desire to overthrow the oligarchy in favor of socialism don’t understand that they are actually doing the bidding of that very oligarchy. It seems counterintuitive, but history bears it out. Every socialist revolution promises a better government. Of course, first you have to install the necessary dictatorship. Unsurprisingly, the socialist never makes it past that point. It’s the same old oligarchy, but under a different name.

Reason #5035 To Leave Public School

It’s difficult to add any commentary to these headlines. They pretty much speak for themselves. Remember, these are the authority figures that you entrust your children to when you send them off to school. These are the figures who are considered guardians of your child during the day. Thanks to reader F.M. for the links.

The Editors’ Quote of the Day:

“Now those who seek absolute power, even though they seek it to do what they regard as good, are simply demanding the right to enforce their own version of heaven on earth, and let me remind you they are the very ones who always create the most hellish tyranny.” – Barry Goldwater

Preparedness Notes for Wednesday – October 04, 2017

October 4, 1923 is the birthday of the late Charlton Heston, who was born John Charles Carter. He died April 5, 2008. He is often remembered for movies like Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments, Soylent Green, The Planet of the Apes, and the survivalist classic The Omega Man.

o o o

Tom Petty, a rock-’n-roll superstar, has died at age 66. He known as a perfectionist in his studio recordings, often working for weeks to achieve the perfect sound. Preppers will remember that he had an extended cameo role in the movie The Postman. His later life was a shambles, marred by heroin addiction and a divorce. But his music will live on, in perfection. I’d like to report that he came to Christ toward the end, but sadly, I’ve read that he did not. It would have be great to know that someday I’d meet him in heaven, with the greeting: “I know you. You’re… famous.” – JWR

Sweet Spot For the 21st Century With Calibers Beating .308- Part 2, by Alpine Evader

Yesterday, I began writing by telling the summary up front. I said we recommend against adopting the beautiful, survival standard of .308/7.62x51mm caliber semi-automatic rifles. Instead, I stated, “The least expensive and best upgrade to any existing AR-15 fire team for high altitude blended threats is to purchase standardized barrels and stock up on single-use, heavier bullets.” I also shared about our survival group’s location decisions. So, who am I to make these statements and recommendations?

Author’s Relevant Background

I climbed my first 14,000+ foot peak at the age of 12 in a summer camp located smack dab in the middle of the Colorado Rockies. I am a father who looks out (logistically, physically, and spiritually) for six children within a blended family. My age is between forty and fifty years old and I’m in moderately good shape. Twelve to sixteen mile hikes with lightweight packs are something I still do. Backpacking is something I’m introducing to the children gradually.

I have over 35 years of outdoor experience and between five and ten years of military service with multiple combat deployments. I’ve consulted with law enforcement at various levels for the past twenty years and grew up at high altitude as well as living at sea level. Formal training includes multiple military environmental survival schools and Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape (SERE) training as well as SERE staff time. I am not a Marine Corps or Army Infantry veteran, but I am a combat decorated armed forces non-commissioned officer (NCO) veteran with an additional five years of experience licensed in civilian law enforcement/investigations, performed within remote and urban regions of the Rocky Mountain Southwest.

Economics & Investing For Preppers

Here are the latest items and commentary on current economics news, market trends, stocks, investing opportunities, and the precious metals markets. We also cover hedges, derivatives, and obscura. And it bears mention that most of these items are from the “tangibles heavy” contrarian perspective of JWR. (SurvivalBlog’s Founder and Senior Editor.) Today’s focus is on the U.S. public and private debt.  (See the Troubling Trends section.)

Precious Metals

First off, here is a headline from Monday: Surging US Dollar Sinks Gold And Silver Prices

Stocks:

Morningstar reported on Tuesday: “Political troubles in Spain, after the weekend saw violent clashes over the Catalonia referendum, took a dent out of the main Ibex index, which was down over 1% at 10.527.”

Commodities:

The price of crude oil seems to have stabilized around $50 per barrel.  This is bad news for OPEC.  And it is not reassuring to the Bakken shale oil producers. (Since $50 is right around break-even for them.)

o o o

After a year in the doldrums, the price of nickel ore is back up to where it was in October of 2016. Though only half of where it was at the odd 2014 price spike, nickel is still attracting plenty of investors.  Small investors can of course hedge by stockpiling U.S. 5 Cent Pieces–still available at face value.

Preparedness Notes for Tuesday – October 03, 2017

October, 3, 2014 is the 21st anniversary of the Mogadishu, Somalia raid. The 18 Americans killed were: MSG Gary Gordon, 1st SFOD-D SFC Randy Shughart, 1st SFOD-D SSG Daniel Busch, 1st SFOD-D SFC Earl Fillmore, 1st SFOD-D MSG Timothy Martin, 1st SFOD-D CPL Jamie Smith, 3/75 Ranger SPC James Cavaco, 3/75 Ranger SGT Casey Joyce, 3/75 Ranger PFC Richard Kowaleski, 3/75 Ranger SGT Dominic Pilla, 3/75 Ranger SGT Lorenzo Ruis, 3/75 Ranger SSG William Cleveland, Jr. 160th SOAR SSG Thomas Field, 160th SOAR CW4 Raymond Frank, 160th SOARD CW3 Clifton Wolcott, 160th SOAR CW2 Donovan Briley, 160th SOAR SGT Cornell Houston, 10th MTN DIV PFC James Martin, 10th MTN DIV

The Somalis killed were unnamed and un-numbered, but estimates range from 315 to 2,000 KIAs.

The events of October 3, 1993 were memorialized in the movie Black Hawk Down.

o o o

The Sunday night tragedy in Las Vegas (with at least 59 dead and more than 525 wounded and injured in the panic to escape) is already being used as justification by the Democrats, in calling for additional civilian disarmament laws. But the sad truth is that the law against murder didn’t stop the killer. Nor did laws severely restricting machine-guns. (Those restrictions—including a $200 Federal transfer tax and background checks–have been in the Federal code since1934.) Less than 1/100th of 1% of firearms in the 50 states are registered machineguns. I really doubt that the gun(s) used in this horrific terror incident were Federally registered. No, odds are that at least one was an illegally converted gun. The mass murderer’s motives are not yet clear. But it has been reported that there was Antifa literature found in his hotel room. Please pray for the families of those killed and for the many who were injured and traumatized. – JWR

[UPDATE: Photos just released show an AR-10 and a M4gery equipped with a Slidefire (‘bump-firing”) stock and with a 60-round Surefire magazine inserted. But that doesn’t  match the audio that was released earlier–that has a perfectly-spaced cyclic rate of fire in long strings in excess of 70 rounds. It would take a lot of practice to get a perfect cyclic strings of fire of such extended length when using a Slidefire stock. (Their strings of fire tend to be sporadic.) I still suspect that at least one of the rifles used was illegally converted to full auto. And for strings of that length, there was probably one or more Surefire 100-round or Beta 100-round C-MAG magazines used–or clones thereof.]

Sweet Spot For the 21st Century With Calibers Beating .308- Part 1, by Alpine Evader

This week I finished my five-year analysis on five intermediate range cartridges. I did an overview of semi-auto rifle logistics in six calibers. Scope of operations must support mounted vehicle extraction (Getting Out of Dodge/Bugout). Hostage recovery (Close Quarter Combat) and  a more typical three to four-person Fire Team foot patrol/maneuver element 6,000 feet above sea level must also be supported. We train for pain. But we are smart, hairless apes/intelligently designed, free-thinking primates, so we plan-do-check-act (or use the OODA Loop) wisely.

“Amateurs study tactics,” goes an old saying, “armchair generals study strategy, but professionals study logistics.”

The Sweet Spot That Wins Wars

If you add physiology and endurance athleticism to those fields, you get the fusion of high altitude light infantry– the sweet spot that wins wars.

Have you heard of this saying?

“From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.”

I would hope you’ve heard of this saying. It’s from Luke 12:48 (NIV). It’s why we integrated into a (mountain) community in our philosophy, rather than hunkering down in the virtual middle of nowhere. Our strategy is one of interlocking Mutual Assistance Group arrangements.

The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. Our Hearts and prayers go out to the victims of Las Vegas, Nevada Shooting.

Nevada Shooting

In the deadliest mass shooting incident in modern U.S. history, a gunman has killed at least 59 people and injured 500+ others. The shooter obtained a 32nd floor room facing an outdoor venue at a concert and continued firing until police entered the room and killed him. No official motive has been released yet. Our thoughts and prayers go with the victims, but this also stands as a warning as to the dangers of large congregations of people.

o o o

Never one to let a good emergency go to waste, Hillary Clinton (among others) jumped right on the anti-gun bandwagon claiming a suppressor would have made things much worse and blaming the NRA. Of course, simple physics dictates that a “suppressor” would not have helped the shooter at all. But why let facts get in the way?
