Here are JWR’s Recommendations of the Week for various media and tools of interest to SurvivalBlog readers. The focus is usually on emergency communications gear, bug out bag gear, books and movies–often with a tie-in to disaster preparedness, and links to “how to” self-sufficiency videos. Reader E.M. wrote to recommend the book American Nations, by Colin Woodard. Here is how E.M. describes the book:

“It was a New Republic ‘Best Book of 2011.’ Yes, I understand that the New Republic has a very liberal bent, so my recommendation comes with caution, but the author explains how the US developed so differently based on the culture that was established by the earliest arrivals in each area, and how those areas actually represent 11 “nations” today. The book explains, for example, why “Yankeedom,” as he calls it, and the “Left Coast” have so much in common, and why “Greater Appalachia” and “The Far West” do, too.

I consider myself to be a serious student of history, but I learned many interesting aspects about the development of this country’s various regions from this book. The author’s liberal bent is very obvious, but it only proves the point that many, if not most, historians are not truly neutral and their views should not be accepted without serious scrutiny, particularly when author begins to describe present day issues and attitudes.”

When you talk to people about preparing, one of the most common themes you’ll encounter is that they want to ensure the safety and security of themselves, their families and their friends in the event something disrupts the ‘rule of law’. The reality is that even with active law enforcement in normal times there are thousands of break-ins, assaults, attacks, thefts and other crimes committed against people and property every day. Since most of us can’t afford to keep an eye on our entire property 24×7, we need some type of force multiplier that can let us know when an intruder is approaching or entering our property.

The goal of this article is to provide some ideas and suggestions regarding the design and implementation of a security system that can help you detect when an intruder is approaching your location and gather observational data so you can make a decision on what you should do about it, both in ‘normal’ times as well as after an event has rendered rule of law null and void. Note that I’ll only be focusing on detective-type controls to help you detect the presence of an intruder, as opposed to preventive controls to keep them out.

As with any project, the first thing you need to do is to define your goals. I’ve been building and expanding my home security/monitoring system for several years (or as my wife refers to it, the ‘never-ending project’), and I’ve used that experience, combined with what I’ve learned about preparedness over the years, to define some goals for what I’ll be discussing. These are:

  • Leverage technology where it makes sense, but keep it simple
  • Include non-electronic options where possible
  • Support a wide range of detection and observational options
  • Support security for fixed locations, with possible applications for mobile security
  • Keep it inexpensive
  • Make it flexible
  • For powered components, capable of being powered by 12V, 5V USB, or AA batteries

One critical point to keep in mind is safety – I’ll discuss various solutions that use things like primers and flares for alerting, so before you decide to employ anything that could potentially harm you or someone else you need to understand your responsibilities and liabilities. Even if your intent was just to alert you that someone was approaching, a shotgun primer or flare could still seriously injure a curious child that stumbles across your alarm system and you could end up going to jail as well as living with the responsibility for the rest of your life. Understand your local laws and regulations, and don’t do anything that could put innocent people in jeopardy. House Judiciary to Hear Three New Gun Laws During Recess

In Some Deep Schumer: Tomorrow (Wednesday, September 4, 2019), while the rest of the House is still on summer recess, the House Judiciary Committee is scheduled to meet and hold fast track legislation hearings on three proposed gun-related laws:  A permanent ban on 11+ round magazines, a gun ownership restriction on anyone convicted of a hate crime misdemeanor, and a Federal “Red Flag” (Pre-Crime) law. Please repeatedly contact your congresscritters, and remind them of their oath to uphold the Constitution. They must OPPOSE any new gun laws. Then call your two U.S. Senators, for ditto.

“Given what I’ve learned over my lifetime I would, first, urge future generations of Europeans to remember my generation as we really were, not as they may wish us to have been. We had all the same vices and weaknesses as today’s young people do: most of us were neither heroes nor monsters.

Of course, many people did extraordinary things, but in most cases only because they were forced to by extreme circumstances, and even then, true heroes were very few and far between: I do not count myself among them.

The same applies to those who failed in their moral obligations during that time. Of course, there were many who committed unspeakable, unforgivable crimes. I believe that CRKT (Columbia River Knife & Tool) set the trend going, in collaborating with custom knife makers. Many of the designs that they are producing, are the result of collaborations. And, without those wonderful collaborations, the knife buying public wouldn’t have access to some fantastic knife designs, at  reasonable prices. We all can’t afford to purchase every custom knife we see – they are expensive, and oftentimes, there is a waiting lists. In some cases those waiting lists are several years long, with some makers. After all, they can only produce so many knives per year. So, we owe CRKT a big “thank you” for bringing some of these designs to us.

Most CRKT are manufactured in Taiwan, and most readers probably don’t know that CRKT actually owns one of the factories, where many of their products are made, and they lease another factory. To ensure that products are made to their strict specifications, one of the executives from CRKT travels to Taiwan to make sure things are being done right – and they spend several weeks at a time there. So, its not like their knives are being produced blindly, they hold everyone accountable to make sure only the best products with very close tolerances are made for their customers.

In the past, I’ve connected CRKT with some pretty outstanding custom knife makers, and as a result, they did collaborations with those folks, more than a few times. Although I never got rewarded in print, for this, I did get a thank you from the folks at CRKT. I also made some suggestions to CRKT, in the past, on some of their designs, to make them more in line with certain customers. To wit, their M-16 line of knives. I saw some of the first prototypes, and suggested that they make the handle materials in different colors, red for firefighters, blue for law enforcement, green for the military, etc. And, it took CRKT a couple years to bring this out, but they did, and the knife handle color variations were good sellers.Continue reading“CRKT Seismic Folder, by Pat Cascio”

Recipe of the Week: Phil’s DIY Dry Pancake Mix

Reader Phil in Utah kindly sent us his recipe for his dry pancake mix.

Each batch of the dry mix makes enough for about four meals of five pancakes each. To use, just measure out one cup of the dry mix and add the moist ingredients. Presto!

Dry Pancake Mix Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
To Prepare Pancakes

Combine and mix briefly:

  • 1 cup of the above-described dry pancake mix
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil or melted butter

Bake these on an oiled griddle or frying pan, as you would any other pancakes. You may add blueberries, or whatever to the mix.

SERVING

Serve as you would any other pancakes, with a topping of syrup, sorghum, or honey.

STORAGE

The dry pancake mix stores well for two weeks, un-refrigerated — or up to 6 weeks, refrigerated.

A Beginner’s Wood Splitting Journey – Part 2, by The Novice

The Straight Stack

I initially stacked my split wood in straight, eight-foot sections about four feet high. This made each of those sections contain approximately a face cord of wood. Three face cords comprise a full cord. We typically burn six to eight full cords each winter.

I put a strip of tarp on the top of each stack and weighted it down with extra pieces of wood. This kept the rain off the top of the stack while allowing the wind to blow through and the sun to dry the sides.

One problem with straight stacks is that as wood dries, it shrinks. This may make a straight stack shift and become unstable as the drying process progresses. “Gangs have been a pain since a long time for everyone, when in the 60s and 70s crime started to band together to gain strength. This was probably related to the appearance of the urban guerrilla (Castro-promoted), who kidnapped and commit crimes all over the country to destroy the stability and the democracy of the country. They recruited members with criminal experience to assist them in the resources collection to finance their political activities, and this started a lot of other criminal actions, on a more serious level. In the barrios, with a large amount of Chavez supporters, these gangs saw where the power balance was, joining to the “cause” and gained impunity and power, oppressing the opposition people.

This said, gangs roamed all over the different regions of the country, respecting each other terrains, enjoying the loot of their crimes. One of the most famous was the called “El tren de Aragua”, dismantled by live fire by death squads some time ago.”

A New York RINO Defects on Gun Legislation

Mentioned by reader C.B., and also seen linked over at Whatfinger.com is this troubling news: Rep. Pete King is the first Republican to sign on to the assault weapons ban. Here is a quote:

“The Assault Weapons Ban of 2019 was rolled out in February by Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.), with 190 other Democrats onboard. An additional 11 lawmakers signed on after mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, left dozens of people dead and many more injured, with King being among the most recent.

King had been the lead sponsor of a bill improving background checks when Republicans controlled the House and was already one of a handful of Republicans backing that bill now.

He had already been considering the assault weapons ban, but the shootings in Ohio and Texas raised the level of urgency.

“I think the assault weapons ban is timely now, especially in view of the shooting in El Paso and Dayton,” King said.”

JWR’s Comment:  So much for standing on principle and your oath to defend the Constitution, Mr. King! You sound like a weatherman reporting that a barometer has shifted. Law-making should not be based on media-driven sentiment.

Seriously, folks: You need to contact both of your senators, and your congressman, repeatedly, regardless of their party affiliation. DO NOT consider them “safe” just because they are Republicans! Remind them of their oath, and that the Second Amendment is an absolute. The magic number of votes on the House side is 218, and 51 on the Senate side. Don’t let them get there!

Presently, both a Federal Red Flag law and a private party transfer criminalization (H.R. 8 “Universal Background Checks”) seem to be in the fait accompli category. The Democrats are now asking:  “How much more can we get?” They are hoping for a combined “assault weapons” and 11+ round magazine ban.
