Editor’s Introductory Notes: The following instructions work with both Tattler brand canning lids and the more recently-introduced Harvest Guard brand lids. The author uses the term “Tattler” generically, just as some people use the word “Kleenex” for facial tissue, even though there are many brands.

I have, many times over the years thought about learning to use Tattler lids because they are reusable – but they are so expensive! So I and managed to put off buying them for a very long time.

Last spring there was a sale on bulk packs of Tattler re-usable canning lids, and I just happened to have some extra money, so I bought 200 wide mouth and 200 of regular mouth size canning lids. I have known for a long time that I needed to learn to use them, and even though I have in my emergency stores over 100 boxes of the regular metal lids, in a long term emergency they would eventually run out, and personally, as a prepper that was not acceptable to me. I like the fact that Tattler or Harvest Guard kids can safely be used repeatedly, if handled properly.

So, now (before I needed to use them) was a good time to figure out how to can with the reusable Tattler lids. I did multiple searches on the Internet, and was totally dismayed to find most people said they had about a 50% failure rate. I figured (hoped) it had something to do with how people were using them, and I was determined I would learn the correct way to can with them.

The lids came with ‘REVISED (easier to follow) CANNING INSTRUCTIONS”. I read the instructions through thoroughly, and noticed on several of the web sites that the instructions were a little different than the instructions I received with the lids. Following a week of heavy snow, we’ve had some unseasonably warm weather. The result was inevitable: It turning our barnyard into an enormous un-flavored Slurpee. Well, it is actually barnyard flavored, but I don’t  wish to sound crude.

I’ve been incredibly busy, trying to get the web pages set up for my new biz. I intend to launch it on February 1st.  Because there is unique descriptive text for each individual gun, and an average of seven photos per gun, this has turned into a big project!  When guns are 122+ years old, there are no two that are exactly alike. So they need detailed descriptions.

I also a lot of snow shoveling and snowplowing. And I also a made a 100+ mile round-trip drive into town, running errands. A lot of this was tackling the ever-changing “Honey Do ” list.

Now, over to Lily, for her more thorough report.  She has a lot to say about her recent kitchen organizing.

Food for Health

I am also working on growing and preserving my own food. This is another family project that my wife and children enjoy participating in. We do not have a large plot of land, so we need to make the best use of what we do have. We really challenge ourselves to see if we can get more than the preceding year. We have had some successes and some setbacks. We learn more from the setbacks than we do from the successes. When the divine hand of providence reaches down and makes our garden thrive, we feel very blessed. It is humbling to see how the natural world of creation is not subject to the whims and fancies of man.

The biggest issue that we have in growing our own food is that we are city bound and unable to have an overly large garden plot. An organization in our city rents out garden plots at a very economical price on donated land and that does help increase our yields. The skills that we are acquiring in gardening under less than ideal conditions will help us when we are ultimately able to relocate. A number of circumstances will not allow us to relocate to a more desirable area for at least two years. It is our hope that when these circumstances are resolved that we will be able to relocate to an area that is conducive to the patriot mindset and self-sufficiency.

Natural Medicine

Another skill I am acquiring, is that of natural medicine and healing. My wife has had a huge impact on this area and could probably contribute volumes to this article. Our family library now consists of numerous works explaining how herbs and natural remedies will help the body. We also have like-minded friends that share many of their recipes.

Not only is herbal and natural medicine an important part of our prepping, but eating a better overall diet is contributing to our survivability. As I stated earlier, I previously took poor care of myself. I can do little to reverse the damage I did earlier in my life. But I am now focused on temple maintenance. By watching my diet and eating good healthy foods and avoiding the over-processed foods that contribute to many of our First World health and dietary issues I hope to at best maintain my health with the hopes of some improvement.

We eat very little white foods unless they occur that way naturally. Mostly we avoid the white sugars and flours that are so over-processed that they have little nutritional value remaining in them. As we age, we need to understand our new limitations and be able to adapt to them, overcome the ones we can and add new skills commensurate with our abilities. The timeless adage “if I knew then what I know now” is quite applicable to my prepping and survival journey. The focus of this article will be on adding new skills that will complement our existing skill set so that we can still be of service and not just survive but thrive in a TEOTWAWKI scenario.

The Importance of Family and Like-Minded Friends

Having a wife and family members that are on board is a huge asset and probably one of if not the most important aspect of preparedness. No man is an island, nor should we try to be when it comes to survival. The most important group of people that should be involved in your efforts are those that live with you. I am blessed to have a family that has a preparedness mindset. My wife as I will demonstrate throughout this article has accepted the challenge of being prepared. She is continually looking for ways to enhance our position in preparing for TEOTWAWKI.

I am fortunate to have a very like-minded wife. She is not turning a blind eye to what is going on around us. It was not easy at first to create buy in with her. Initially, I did not push, but I proposed things for her to look at and allowed her to reach her own conclusions. When a person allows themselves to look objectively at the truth, understanding will come quickly. There are now many days when I come home from work and my wife is pointing out issues out to me.

The Impact of Age and Health

I am now over 50 years old and I do not possess the physical abilities that I had 20 years ago. I am not nearly as fit as I was even 10 years ago. When I was forty, I graduated from a special teams training program at the department of corrections where I worked. It was a proud accomplishment in and of itself but being the second oldest person to ever complete the program made it more special. I turned 40 on the last day of training. We were roused out of our racks in the middle of the night to celebrate my special day with 40 push-ups, 40 mountain climbers, 40 Iron Mike’s et al…   Along with basic training it is one of my proudest accomplishments.

Not only am I in decline in my physical strength, but my overall medical health is not the best. I will spare you all the intimate details but suffice it to say some of my medical issues involve, high blood pressure, gastrointestinal and other conditions that leave me susceptible to infection which could possibly leave me compromised in a TEOTWAWKI scenario. After years of making poor lifestyle choices I have lowered my general health to the point that I cannot return to where I was, but I can work to prevent further deterioration.

My Efforts

I will now show how I am addressing these issues to make myself more of an asset and less of a liability in the event of TEOTWAWKI. What I will recommend is not for everyone. I have only recently started prepping over concern for the downward spiral that our moral, social, political and economic systems are in. I have been seriously prepping for less than seven years. Hopefully most of you have a good skillset and do not need this advice. But, the one thing I have learned in my prepping journey is that I can never learn enough. Knowledge is as important as equipment, possibly more so. Iranian Hackers Prying the US Power Grids

Wired reports: Iranian Hackers Have Been ‘Password-Spraying’ the US Grid. JWR’s Comments:  Nefarious access to SCADA systems can result in more than just short-term power interruptions. By intentionally overloading circuits there could be permanent physical damage to transformers. Similarly, water utility equipment could be damaged by repeated or carefully sequenced triggering of solenoid valves, taking advantage of the “water hammer” effect of water–an incompressible fluid. I suspect that these sort of hacking probes have gone on for years. The hackers may be gathering detailed lists of “vulns” that can be scripted into massive Fire Sale hack attack that would most likely be launched over a holiday weekend.  Be ready to survive power grid failure, folks!
