The Straight Stack

I initially stacked my split wood in straight, eight-foot sections about four feet high. This made each of those sections contain approximately a face cord of wood. Three face cords comprise a full cord. We typically burn six to eight full cords each winter.

I put a strip of tarp on the top of each stack and weighted it down with extra pieces of wood. This kept the rain off the top of the stack while allowing the wind to blow through and the sun to dry the sides.

One problem with straight stacks is that as wood dries, it shrinks. This may make a straight stack shift and become unstable as the drying process progresses. A New York RINO Defects on Gun Legislation

Mentioned by reader C.B., and also seen linked over at Whatfinger.com is this troubling news: Rep. Pete King is the first Republican to sign on to the assault weapons ban. Here is a quote:

“The Assault Weapons Ban of 2019 was rolled out in February by Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.), with 190 other Democrats onboard. An additional 11 lawmakers signed on after mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, left dozens of people dead and many more injured, with King being among the most recent.

King had been the lead sponsor of a bill improving background checks when Republicans controlled the House and was already one of a handful of Republicans backing that bill now.

He had already been considering the assault weapons ban, but the shootings in Ohio and Texas raised the level of urgency.

“I think the assault weapons ban is timely now, especially in view of the shooting in El Paso and Dayton,” King said.”

JWR’s Comment:  So much for standing on principle and your oath to defend the Constitution, Mr. King! You sound like a weatherman reporting that a barometer has shifted. Law-making should not be based on media-driven sentiment.

Seriously, folks: You need to contact both of your senators, and your congressman, repeatedly, regardless of their party affiliation. DO NOT consider them “safe” just because they are Republicans! Remind them of their oath, and that the Second Amendment is an absolute. The magic number of votes on the House side is 218, and 51 on the Senate side. Don’t let them get there!

Presently, both a Federal Red Flag law and a private party transfer criminalization (H.R. 8 “Universal Background Checks”) seem to be in the fait accompli category. The Democrats are now asking:  “How much more can we get?” They are hoping for a combined “assault weapons” and 11+ round magazine ban. Preparedness Notes for Saturday — August 31, 2019

August 31st, 1992 is the day that Randy Weaver surrendered to the Federal Authorities, ending the 10-day siege at Ruby Ridge. This is the incident that preceded the Waco siege and is known for the unconstitutional rules of engagement and overzealous actions by the jack booted thugs of the federal authorities that resulted in the death of two innocent people– Sammy and Vicki Weaver, Randy’s son and wife. It is notable that Randy was acquitted of all charges except missing a court date and violating bail conditions on an ATF sting operation where it is suspected that Mr. Weaver did nothing wrong but that the ATF informant altered the shotguns sold to him by Weaver resulting in Weaver’s arrest. In addition, the missed court date was due to clerical errors by the court. All involved Federal agencies were publicly reprimanded, and the state of Idaho attempted to press charges against some individuals for their actions but were stymied due to federal interference.

A Beginner’s Wood Splitting Journey – Part 1, by The Novice

Six years ago, my wife and I slipped the surly bonds of suburbia and sought refuge in less densely populated parts. We settled in a log home in the woods. The northern woods in winter are beautiful but cold. Keeping warm led to a discovery: propane is expensive. So in the interest of fiscal responsibility, we henceforth heated our home by the sweat of my brow.

The details of felling trees, limbing, bucking logs, and hauling billets belong to a tale for another day. My story today concerns splitting wood: the experiences of a smooth-handed greenhorn reducing billets of wood into pieces that will stack and dry well and then be easily handled as they are fed into a wood stove.

I began my wood splitting journey with the heritage of my fathers: two axes, one inherited from my father, and one inherited from my father-in-law. The planes of my father’s axe are concave, tapering gently up to the eye where the head of the axe surrounds the handle. The planes of my father-in law’s axe tend toward the convex, curving more quickly outward toward its maximum width as it sweeps up toward the eye. These characteristics make my dad’s axe a felling axe, and my father-in-law’s axe a splitting axe.

The felling axe cuts deeply but spreads little. This makes it good for cutting across the grain of the wood. The splitting axe widens the cleft abruptly, before the energy of the blow can be dissipated by the friction of penetration. This makes it good for forcing the billet apart as it explosively creates a cleft parallel with the grain of the wood.

Although it is old, my father-in-law’s axe is a finely crafted and highly effective tool. I have subsequently used many different splitting tools, but I was blessed to begin my wood splitting journey with one of the best.Continue reading“A Beginner’s Wood Splitting Journey – Part 1, by The Novice”

Jim Reports:

We had some family travel early this week, to be at the hospital to assist a relative, in eastern Washington. Thankfully, the doctors had a good report. Praise God!

I’m coming down to the wire on my deadline for the first half of my manuscript for “The Ultimate Prepper’s Survival Guide: An Advanced Preparedness Handbook for Uncertain Times“. That is scheduled for release by Carlton Publishing of London, in mid-to late 2020. My deadline for the second half of the manuscript is September 22nd.  Needless to say, I will be very busy, in the interim.

In my “spare” time, I’ve been building slash piles, hauling wood, and splitting rounds. With the help of our kids, I should have all of the wood we’ll need for the winter stacked under cover by the middle of next week. That way, we’ll feel truly ready for winter.

I have a gun show scheduled for the weekend of 6-7-8 September, in Kalispell, Montana. Then, soon after that I’ll be traveling out of state to assist an elderly relative. Have Macbook, Will Travel. It is nice being able to take my work with me.

August 30th is the 100th birthday of the late Joachim Rønneberg, a hero of the Norwegian resistance during World War II. He was born in 1919. His exploits earned him the War Cross With Sword, Norway’s highest military honor. In April 2013, Rønneberg was presented with a Union Jack during a ceremony at the Special Operations Executive (SOE) monument in London to mark 70 years since the successful Gunnerside heavy water plant sabotage mission. Rønneberg died in 2018, just a year short of his 100th birthday.

Having been a reader of SurvivalBlog for a couple of years, I have read some fascinating articles. The body of knowledge out there is truly astounding. There have been many articles about preparing for the difficult times ahead which I found to be helpful and unsettling. Sometimes, I feel the dread of knowing a powerful storm is heading our way and there is going to be much hardship as a result. My family lives in the hurricane belt, and one of the frustrating things is knowing a storm is on the way and trying to develop an action plan when the course and arrival time of the calamity is constantly changing. We face the same unknown with the likely coming collapse of society. We all see signs of increased political tension and name-calling by the media. The political left controls the media, or vice-versa…I am not sure it isn’t the media controlling the politicians at this stage. The result of this is a constant feed of propaganda. An entire generation has been brainwashed as a result. Right-leaning media does the same, so there are few sources of truth to be found.

In a recent conversation about media bias, I argued bias can also be defined by what is not reported. Try finding any information that reveals how lawlessly the previous administration behaved. You will have to search long and hard to find anything. With the recent mass shootings, there is another round of knee-jerk anti-gun legislation heading our way. There is no doubt, the left will not be content until all guns have been confiscated except those used for their protection. At what point will the tipping point be reached? How will we know?

The purpose of this article is to explore how we are to recognize when the tipping point has been reached and the Second American Revolution has begun. Some prefer to call it the Second Civil War…by either name, we are going to be in for some difficult times ahead. I do not claim to have the answers, but am very interested in learning what others who may be more informed have to say about the subject. As a result, my hopes are to initiate discussion in the comments section by making observations and asking several questions in this article. Key yield curve inverts to worst level since May 2007, 30-year rate under 2%

“Long-term Treasury rates added to their monthlong slide on Tuesday, aggravating a key yield curve inversion and sending the 10-year yield to its lowest level against the 2-year rate since 2007.

The yield on the benchmark 2-year Treasury note, more sensitive to changes in Federal Reserve policy, held steady at 1.533%, 4 basis points above the 10-year note’s rate of 1.493%. Earlier, the spread between the two yields dropped to 4.2 basis points, its most-negative point since May 2007.

The spread between the 3-month Treasury yield and that of the 10-year note — the Federal Reserve’s preferred inversion metric — slumped to -50 basis points, its lowest since March 2007. The 30-year bond yielded 1.978%, near its all-time low; the 30-year rate fell under 2% for the first time ever on Aug. 14.

Falls of the 10-year rate below the 2-year yield are viewed by fixed income traders as important recession prognosticators, marking an unusual phenomenon as bond holders receive better compensation in the short term. The Dow Jones Industrial Average retraced a 155-point gain on Tuesday as bond yields fell.”

Garlic deserves a place in a survival garden. Both for it’s culinary attributes as well as medicinal qualities, garlic is a champ. Plant the largest nicest-looking cloves you can find, as you want your crop to have good genetics. After harvest, dry the crop carefully. Store the biggest heads of garlic in a separate place to replant for the next crop. Either soft neck or hard neck garlic will work. Hard neck garlic produces green scapes which need to be cut off; these can be used in cooking. Hard neck garlic is reputed to have better flavor than soft neck garlic. Soft neck garlic can be braided and will store longer. I honestly can’t tell the difference in terms of flavor and grow and enjoy both kinds. Note: Elephant garlic is not a true garlic. It is more closely related to leeks. It doesn’t have the same medicinal or storage qualities as traditional garlic. I don’t recommend it for a survival garden situation.

Onions are another champ in the garden. Their culinary impact on your meals is a real plus. You can harvest some onions fresh for immediate use. Reserve most for storage, for the non-growing season. Grow what are known as storage onions — not sweet onions such as Vidalia. Sweet onions are not meant for long-term storage.

What about greens? Nutrient rich and flavorful, greens such as kale, chard, and spinach are worthy of a space in a survival garden. They’re all easy to grow, can be harvested by the leaf (instead of pulling the whole plant) and will survive light frosts if covered. Spinach is finicky about hot weather and does better in cooler temps. Some varieties of spinach are better suited to warmer weather and others do well into light frosts. If your family isn’t used to eating these crops you’ll want to be sure to introduce them to these star veggies before a crisis situation. Lacinato kale is nicknamed “dinosaur kale” due to the appearance of the leaves which may induce kids to be willing to try it.
