Using the Past to Prepare for the Future – Part 1, by 3AD Scout

It does not take much imagination to realize that our society will come crashing down without the cheap, steady flow of electricity. The world’s electric grids are the lifeblood of our modern lifestyle. Many predictions believe that if the electrical grid was shut down, by something like an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) or a very strong Coronal Mass Ejection (CME), then civilization would be thrown back into the 1800s. Some predictions even think the 1700s or even further back. Regardless of what time period we are all transported back to, we are going to have to find ways to replace all the modern conveniences, instantly made useless, that we currently depend upon for our daily life and survival. As a society, we do not realize how good we have it. Americans and others enjoy several hours of “free time” compared to those living in the 1700s and 1800s. All that “free…

Post-TEOTWAWKI Community and Employment – Part 2, by 3AD Scout

…needed is welders. Once again, some welding rigs require a lot of power. The good news is many welding rigs are manufactured with their own generators built into the rig, the requirement for fuel and consumables such as MIG-wire, rods, gases, electrodes, and others will still be logistical issues. Everyone serious about surviving TEOTWAWKI should be ready to build, if not already have, a wood gasification system. This technology will survive an EMP or CME and can take the place of gasoline and perhaps propane in various pieces of equipment. During World War II, wood gasifiers were used both in the U.S. and the UK to make up for the lack of gasoline available due to war rationing. Blacksmithing, although considered an art form nowadays, has very good survival benefits. Blacksmithing is a relatively old technology. The loss of all our modern technology would not necessarily impact the ability of…

Post-TEOTWAWKI Community and Employment – Part 1, by 3AD Scout

…come to a point, where we enjoy the most leisure time in human history. Diseases responsible for keeping the average life expectancy in the 40s to 60s are now rare and it is common for people to live into their 80s, 90s, and even over 100. Clean water and sewage treatment have also aided in adding to our life expectancy. The Information Age has made it quick and easy to find information and to learn skills at a faster pace. An event, that ends the world as we know it, will erase about 150 years of progress and with it will bring back diseases, more injuries and deaths due to reverting back to manual labor and free time will be a sparse luxury. To clarify, I am not talking about tornadoes or floods but rather large-scale incidents like a coronal mass ejection (CME), electromagnetic pulse (EMP), or other events whose…

The US as Babylon The Great, and What it Means to Preppers, by R.G.

…GHBs are very useful, take heed. If we are destroyed by an EMP/CME, your BOV may be a bicycle or a wheelbarrow, are you prepared for that? For some of you your BOL may be hunkering down at home. Is your home prepared for that? c. Freedom Versus Liberty “And the fruits of the lust of your soul have departed from you…” (Rev 18:14a) America has forgotten the difference between Freedom vs Liberty. Freedom is the ability to do anything your heart devises without repercussions. This is very dangerous while we live in this fallen world. Conversely, Liberty was a French word that spoke to freedom within limits. We can also say something similar about Democracy vs Constitutional Republics. Democracy in its purest form says the majority rules and let the rest take the hindquarter. Conversely, a Constitutional Republic says We the People elect representatives who rule for us, all…

…“possibilities,” not just with GHB’s but most other aspects of life as well. My Assumptions When Deciding What to Pack The only scenario I can imagine necessitating using a GHB for me personally would be a CME or EMP if they’re as bad as many assume and similar to the book One Second After. In those situations, since I’m already aware of what they are and how serious they might be, I’ll recognize the symptoms. While everyone else is still scratching their heads and pounding their cellphones on the dashboard, I’ll have my GHB in hand and headed home before most people even start looking out their windows to see what happened. In any type of slo-mo meltdown such as described in the first chapters in Patriots, I can’t imagine myself watching and doing nothing as the world falls apart around me. I’d have left long before that point since…

Planning Your Escape – Part 1, by JMD

…I recently had a conversation regarding emergency preparations with an acquaintance that commuted back and forth to work – her office was about 20 driving miles away, and it usually takes her about an hour to drive each way. She has a typical office drone job and dresses in decent business clothes for her commute. I asked her how she would get home if major event occurred while she was at work (EMP/CME, earthquake, civil breakdown, etc.) and she couldn’t drive, and she responded that it was “only an hour away” and that she could easily walk that. She had no concept of the actual distance involved, potential weather conditions, roadblocks or any of the other hundreds of factors that could prevent her from ever making it home. RTB planning for shorter local trips that happen every day can be relatively straightforward, but things can get a lot more complicated…

…whose utility district is much of SE Pennsylvania and the City of Philadelphia.” Nope, nothing to see here – move along. Thanks to H.L. for the link. I know my local power utility is fighting for these meters as well, but the hold-up here is that they want the customers to pay for the meters as well as making it mandatory. So far, the PUC has held strong in refusing the request. Geostorm History Reader A.D. sent in this Time Machine article from spaceweather.com that gives a synopsis of the geomagnetic mega-storm the earth experienced 159 years ago. When the sun had a billion-ton coronal mass ejection (CME) that slammed into the earth, campers in the Rocky Mountains thought they were experiencing sunrise and people in Cuba were able to read the newspaper from the lights of the aurora borealis. Telegraph operators were shocked to find their telegraph papers set…

My Family Preparedness Plan- Part 1, by R.S.

…the minutes, hours, and days immediately following an event. I originally wrote this guide for my family and close personal friends. Many of them have little understanding of the scenarios discussed. My hope was to bring some awareness to the issues in hope that, should an event transpire, they would have taken the necessary steps and know what to expect and what to do. If anyone else can benefit from what is, admittedly, a beginner’s introduction to preparedness, so much the better! Events: EMP Grid down Natural disaster (flood, snow/ice storm, tornado) Economic collapse Terrorist attack Martial Law Pandemic EMP EMP This is probably the worst-case scenario, so I’ll start here. An EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) can occur in two ways: a coronal mass ejection or nuclear blast. First, EMPs can occur naturally when a coronal mass ejection (CME) erupts on the sun. These CMEs occur quite regularly; however, the…

Preparedness Notes for Monday – July 24, 2017

July 24 – The late Jerry Ahern passed away on this day, July 24th, in 2012. He is missed. o o o From Spaceweather.com: “On Sunday July 23rd, a spectacular X-class CME emerged from the farside of the sun. . . If this explosion had occurred 2 weeks ago when the huge sunspot was facing Earth, we would be predicting strong geomagnetic storms in the days ahead. Instead, the CME is racing away from our planet … and directly toward Mars.”…

…the benchmark that are wildly different from the spot price at the same time. This is hitting traders, big banks, and investors with surprise market losses or gains. This explains why the companies the LBMA hired to run the silver fix, CME Group, and Thomsen Reuters suddenly quit. (CME Group also runs the COMEX. Doesn’t that make you feel confident that gold futures are priced correctly?) Ronan Manly at BullionStar notes that the London Gold Fix is broken as well, costing traders millions of dollars worth of bogus expenses. South America Going back to SRSrocco, we read that a huge decline in Peru’s silver production may spell shortages in the near future. Peru has been one of the world’s top silver producers since the Spanish conquest of the area in the 1500s. Since silver is a by-product of copper, zinc, or lead mining, when “Dr Copper” catches a cold, silver…

The 100-Year Geomagnetic Storm and The Electric Grid – Part 1, by Tango Delta

An average of once every one hundred years the sun takes aim at earth and launches a ginormous coronal mass ejection(CME). Less than a day later, it arrives as a cloud of charged particles and hits the earth’s magnetic field. It has a southern polarity and, therefore, “couples” with the earth’s magnetosphere, creating swirling “electrojets” of charged particles 100km above the earth. These produce geomagnetically-induced currents (GIC) in the earth itself. These currents flow into the grounding mechanisms of large Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission towers. The current then flows through the transmission lines and into the EHV transformers in the system. This quasi-DC current (in an AC system) produces “half cycle saturation” that overheats and permanently damages those $5-10 million boxcar-sized transformers. The current also produces harmonics that can damage or trick other components in the system, resulting in a collapse of the grid. The most important EHV transformers…

Bug Out: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly–You Can Arrive Alive, by Semper Paro

I.  Introduction – Possible Scenarios.   Your automobile becomes inoperable for a period of time while traveling – it is extremely hot or extremely cold and hours to wait. A natural disaster occurs and you have to evacuate. Chaos occurs due to financial collapse or other major event causing civil unrest. An Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP) or Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) caused by solar flare(s) renders your vehicle dead miles from home. Or, an EMP occurs as a result of a nuclear strike (with collateral fall-out to follow). Use your imagination…in reality, nothing is too far fetched. While these are listed in order from “Bad” to “Worse”, all of these have great commonalities.  The more obvious should be that (1) they are realistic and possible, (2) they can occur and cause mass panic and civil upheaval in a relatively short time, (3) they can land you in a situation that most likely…

Seventeen and Prepping, by Michael on the East Coast

…considered myself safe. Yet such events as a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME), Flu pandemic, economic collapse and innumerable more catastrophes made me reconsider my “high on the horse” mentality quickly. As I did then, I continue to want to leave the East Coast for good, as I see it leading to the destruction of the American way of life and a haven for looters and other miscreants after a TEOTWAWKI event. As it turns out my father has a job opportunity that will take him west after I graduate high school. Naturally, my mother and I will follow him out there. As Robinson Jeffers said in his poem Shine, Perishing Republic, which includes this stanza: “But for my children, I would have them keep their distance from the thickening center;    corruption Never has been compulsory, when the cities lie at the monster’s feet there are left the mountains.” I…
