Recipe of the Week: Dave’s Elk Stew

The following recipe for Elk Stew is from reader Dave W.  This recipe has a bit of cloves, that can be omitted if you dislike that flavor.

Ingredients
  • 1 lb. elk meat, cubed to bite-size
  • 2 -14.5 oz cans beef broth
  • 1 -14.5 can of diced tomatoes
  • 1 ½ T. all-purpose flour
  • ¼ c peas — preferably fresh, or frozen ones will suffice
  • 2 c. cubed potatoes
  • ½ c. diced carrots
  • ¼ c chopped onions — preferably fresh, or frozen ones will suffice
  • 1 T. Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ c. wine — I prefer chablis. You can also use lager-style beer
  • 1 t. basil (or less, to taste)
  • ¼ t. cloves (optional)
  • ¼ t. white sugar
  • Salt (to taste)
Directions
  1. Brown the elk meat in a pan.
  2. Add flour and stir to make it into a rue.
  3. Add broth and wine (or substutute lager-style beer.)
  4. Add vegetables.
  5. Add the seasonings.
  6. Stir on high until thickened.
  7. Simmer until vegetables are tender.
  8. Cook the vegetables before adding for quick stew or simmer for several hours over low heat until vegetables are soft.
  9. Tastes best if simmered for several hours.
STORAGE

The leftovers are awesome–actually better-tasting on Day Two than on Day One!

The Editors’ Quote of the Day:

“The power which a multiple millionaire, who may be my neighbor and perhaps my employer, has over me is very much less than that which the smallest “functionaire” possesses who wields the coercive power of the state, and on whose desecration it depends whether and how I am allowed to live or to work.” – Frederich von Hayek, The Road to Serfdom

Preparedness Notes for Sunday — November 7, 2021

November 7th is the anniversary of the death of actor Steve McQueen (born March 24, 1930, died November 7, 1980). The many well-publicized exploits in his tempestuous life and his enduring persona are well known. However, the end of his life is actually the most noteworthy part of his legacy, even though it seldom gets much publicity outside of Christian circles; he came to Jesus after he had been diagnosed with mesothelioma. He died with his forefinger pointing to his key verse in his Bible – Titus 1:2.

I’ve reactivated order-taking at Elk Creek Company. We have two payment options shown for our gun and knife prices: In pre-1965 U.S. silver coins, or in Federal Reserve Notes (FRNs). We appreciate your business, regardless of how you pay. Order mailings will resume on Monday. (November 8th, 2021.)

Smith and Wesson MP9 EZ, by The Novice

This is my review and range report on the Smith and Wesson Performance Center M&P9 Shield “EZ” variant.

The Smith and Wesson Performance Center M&P9 Shield EZ is an easily-loaded and easily-racked 9mm handgun with the best overall handgun sights that I have ever used. I am not really a fan of the grip safety, and I wish that the sights were adjustable for elevation as well as windage. Other than that, I can’t think of any way to improve this fine design.

The Backstory

A friend of mine, “Running Man”, recently acquired his first handgun. It was entrusted to him by his father. The handgun is a beautiful, stainless steel Smith and Wesson 4586 in .45 ACP. His father had acquired the 4586 some years ago when his local police department made the transition from .45 ACP to 9 mm.

Running Man brought the 4586 over for a familiarization session. We reviewed the basics of firearms safety, field stripped and cleaned the 4586 to see what makes it tick, talked a little about range safety, worked on how to effectively grip the 4586, and then practiced firing it with both paper and steel targets.

The heavy, solid steel construction of the 4586 did a great job of moderating the recoil of the .45 ACP cartridge. I do not particularly like double-action-only triggers, but this one was smooth enough that I was able to shoot fairly decent groups with it. Running Man proved himself to be a good natural shot. I felt that he and the 4586 are well-matched, with one major exception.

The one major exception is the recoil spring. It is a bit on the heavy side, making racking the slide somewhat difficult.

Several years ago, Running Man got a virus with flu-like symptoms. The virus migrated to his heart, and caused the muscle to begin to deteriorate. Ultimately, Running Man needed a heart transplant.

One of the procedures associated with the heart transplant damaged the nerves running down Running Man’s left arm. As a result, the thumb and index finger of his left hand are numb and weak. The heavy recoil spring on the 4586 makes it extremely difficult for Running Man to rack the slide.

The MP9 EZ

I had previously read about the easily racked slide of the M&P Shield EZ by Smith and Wesson. I had thought about how that feature might be useful to someone with weakness in their non-dominant hand. Now I knew someone who could personally benefit from that feature. With that in mind, I contacted Smith and Wesson so see if I could borrow an MP9 EZ for testing and evaluation. They were kind enough to agree.Continue reading“Smith and Wesson MP9 EZ, by The Novice”

The Editors’ Quote of the Day:

Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;

But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.

Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:

But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.

But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?

Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.

I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.

Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all.

Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.

And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.

Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.

Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?

They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them.

But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.

My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,

I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.

Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?

For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.

Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.

For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.

Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.” – Galatians 4 (KJV)

Preparedness Notes for Saturday — November 6, 2021

November 6, is the anniversary of the day that B-24 Liberator co-pilot Al Millspaugh was shot down over Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, in 1944. I got to know Al at some John Birch Society chapter meetings back in the late 1970s. Hearing his stories was quite fascinating. My novel Liberators is in part dedicated to Al Millspaugh. He is still alive and kicking and he is quite a guy.

How to Quickly Kindle a Fire, by St. Funogas

Comments on SurvivalBlog last winter about some folks having issues starting their morning fire in the woodstove got me to thinking about how crucial fire-building skills should be in our skill-set preps, as well as an important every-day skill for those of us who heat with wood or build fires on a regular basis. If TEOTWAWKI becomes a reality and a wood fire becomes common for heating and cooking, this knowledge will be essential.

Much has been written on the many aspects of building a fire, mostly geared towards wilderness emergencies, but they typically only address how to ignite tinder, not how to set a fire up properly so it will take off on its own once the tinder catches fire. This article concentrates on that most important fire-building skill: the technique of building a quick fire the first time, every time you try. This method applies to home-woodstove fires and wilderness campfires as well.

An important life skill we should learn whether we have a woodstove or not is how to build a fire quickly and efficiently without using dangerous highly-flammable fuels such as lighter fluid or gasoline.Continue reading“How to Quickly Kindle a Fire, by St. Funogas”

Editors’ Prepping Progress

To be prepared for a crisis, every Prepper must establish goals and make long-term and short-term plans. In this column, the SurvivalBlog editors review their week’s prep activities and planned prep activities for the coming week. These range from healthcare and gear purchases to gardening, ranch improvements, bug out bag fine-tuning, and food storage. This is something akin to our Retreat Owner Profiles, but written incrementally and in detail, throughout the year.  We always welcome you to share your own successes and wisdom in your e-mailed letters. We post many of those –or excerpts thereof — in this column, in the Odds ‘n Sods Column, and in the Snippets column. Let’s keep busy and be ready!

Jim Reports:

I’ve just returned to The Rawles Ranch.  Thanks for your patience, while I attended a family memorial service.

I’ve reactivated order-taking at Elk Creek Company. With the recent increase in the spot price of silver (around $24.15 per Troy ounce), this is an advantageous time to pay for your order with silver.  We have two payment options shown for our gun and knife prices: In pre-1965 U.S. silver coins, or in Federal Reserve Notes (FRNs). We appreciate your business, regardless of how you pay. Order mailings will resume on Monday, November 8th, 2021.

Now, over to Lily, who has been capably taking care of the ranch, in my absence. She is an amazing wife and a gift from God!

The Editors’ Quote of the Day:

A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.

A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.

He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

Righteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.

There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.

The ransom of a man’s life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke.

The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.

The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.

Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly.

A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health.

Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.” – Proverbs 13: 1-18 (KJV)

Gunpowder, treason and plot.

Should ever be forgot.”

Establishing a Community Corner, by Mark C.

Introduction

In this essay, I’m recommending a concept. I hope to see some feedback in the blog’s Snippets column, in the next couple of weeks. In a nutshell, I’m suggesting establishing small town Community Cornera — Community-Minded Meeting Places and Event Centers.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a lawyer and seek legal advice for all businesses before pursuing anything spelled out below.

As a Redoubter, I am relocating to a small town with little more than a few restaurants, a gas station, and a coffee shop.  I noticed a small prime location corner suite available for lease. My mind has gone into over drive with the current events surrounding our currency and economy and restriction of movements, products and services via mandates.  “How can I find who is selling items like eggs, honey, bread, beef and maybe there is a need for an item that I can make and trade to add to the community?  Furthermore, how do people in the community know about each other’s goods and services?”  I am willing to foot the bill for several years to develop this idea.

#1 – How do I become part of the town economy and culture without becoming seen as an outsider?  For example if I opened some new age yoga studio California-style in this small mountain town, I likely will be branded a “transplant”. Or if I open a competing business, not filling a need in the economy, but putting “Farmer Bob’s Shop” out of business. I could be exiled.  Instead I want to be an extension of Farmer Bob’s Shop.

#2 – How to encourage participation? Mass mailers? Speeches on the importance of small community economies during hard economic times by experts?  This could demonstrate how the space can be used and its intended purpose.  I want to advertise and show examples of how the space can be used, not my strong point.

#3 – Reaching in and reaching out. Looking for local vendors, services, goods and if none exist then maybe reaching out to the surrounding towns and encourage people that do this sort of businesses to come and use the space.  If this stimulates locals bring it back home to locals.

#4 – And foremost is walking the thin line of legality. i.e.  If I serve food then I run up against the bureaucracy of restaurant regulation, licensing, and liability.  But some places have “Cottage Food Law” and wrapped foods not produced in a kitchen on site could possibly be sold.Continue reading“Establishing a Community Corner, by Mark C.”

Economics & Investing For Preppers

Here are the latest news items and commentary on current economics news, market trends, stocks, investing opportunities, and the precious metals markets. We also cover hedges, derivatives, and obscura. Most of these items are from the “tangibles heavy” contrarian perspective of SurvivalBlog’s Founder and Senior Editor, JWR. Today, we look at America’s new physical tungsten investors. (See the Tangibles Investing section.)

Precious Metals:

The result of the November 2-3 Federal Reserve Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting may be a genuine move toward tapering their bond purchases. (Versus their incessant jawboning, to date.) This could push up interest rates and hence push down precious metals prices, at least in the short term. Don’t let that frighten you. Instead, look at it as a buying opportunity. When interest rates inevitably jump, the prices of both equities and precious metals will suffer. But once Incipient Dollar Doom becomes apparent to all, we will witness both an equities collapse and a precious metals bull market that will make the one in the late 1970s seem small, by comparison.
