Guest Post: Dealing With Hypothermia by Joe Alton, MD and Amy Alton ARNP

Joe and Amy are authors of The Survival Medicine Handbook: The Essential Guide For When Help Is Not On The Way and Alton’s Antibiotics And Infectious Disease: The Layman’s Guide To Available Antibiotics In Austere Settings. They also run doomandbloom.net which is an excellent source for austere medical knowledge. The environment plays a large role in your success as medic in survival settings. If you don’t take weather conditions and other factors into account, you have made the environment your enemy, and it’s a formidable one. Different areas may pose special challenges. If you live in Miami, you might be treating a lot of people with heat stroke. If you live in Siberia, you’ll be treating a lot of people with cold-related exposure. In many places, you’ll be at risk for both, depending on the time of year. Illness related to cold temperatures is known as ‘Hypothermia”. Normally, the body…

The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

…want to be falling into. Md is not a gun friendly state. Tunnel Rabbit Re: Lyme Disease It is a very serious disease. If I look for and if I see what remotely resembles the symtoms, I will self medicate. There are several braod spectrum antibiotics that can knock it out if treated with in the first two weeks. Again, highly recommend Dr. Joe Alton’s 300+ page book available at Survival Medicine.com, Alton’s Antibiotics and Infectious Diseases ( for austere times…). I have a signed copy ordered directly from his web site. I read it in one long sitting. It is written for the layman. Using a PDR, or a Merck manual is not for the layman, but are good references for difficult infections. Another bargain is the 700+ page Survival Medical Handbook. Combined, these books far exceed the scope and instruction of Where There is No Doctor, as it…

Poll Results: Why are You Preparing to Survive?

…the world as we know it begins to fall apart – most likely permanently- he will be just coming up in age and entering what should be the most wondrous years of a child’s life. For him, and for my future children, I will fill their youthful imaginations with nature, tools, projects, outdoor adventure and practical knowledge. Before I let the idiot-box and America’s media-driven junk-culture destroy their understanding of their place in God’s kingdom (and the animal kingdom), they will know what to eat and how to hunt it, how to garden, how to fix stuff and how to avoid trouble in a society that in the future will eventually fail entirely by trying to eliminate all risk of failure here in the present. They will be encouraged to learn practical trades: veterinary sciences, engineering, construction, medicine and alternative medicine, martial arts, food production and off-the-grid technology solutions. No…

Odds ‘n Sods:

Reader “Ed7B” sent us a link to a page at the Medical Corps web site with an account of an emergency appendectomy in a submarine in WWII – with not a doctor for many miles, and a dearth of proper equipment, tools and drugs. Ed’s comment: “They still managed to get this sailor’s appendix out and have a happy outcome. Pertinent to what people can expect when there is no hospital open, let alone a doctor to be found.” Speaking of preparedness for austere medicine, don’t miss the outstanding Medical Corps training on August 24-25-26 at the Ohio State University Extension Campus in Caldwell, Ohio.   o o o Frequent content contributor SF in Hawaii sent us the URL for Frontier Natural Products Co-Op, a mail order firm that has a lot of organic spices and mixes in foil packages. SF’s comment: “Spices and precious metals used to trade on…

Stock Up on Potassium Iodate–Pronto!

With the growing nuclear threats from China, North Korea, and assorted Muslim terrorist groups, it is important to get prepared for surviving radioactive fallout. At the minimum, I think that there is a very high likelihood that at least one sub-critical mass radioactive “dirty bomb” will be be set off within the continental U.S. sometime in the next 10 years. Near term worst case: One or more of them go off on September 11th. (Two weeks from now.) Plan accordingly. Study the prevailing wind patterns. Get a copy of Nuclear War Survival Skills. (It is available for free download from the good folks at the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine, so you have no excuse not to have a copy on your bookshelf!) If you have a big budget build yourself a fully equipped blast shelter with HEPA filters. But even if you budget is austere, you should at…

Letter Re: Herbal Medications and Remedies

…things that might have an effect on reducing my need for my own services). What I have observed is that there is not much out there in the way of good research on herbal preparations. What little there is shows mostly negative or equivocal results (which makes it hard to get published). What little halfway decent research my wife found back in the late 1990s was mostly out of Germany, but most of it was pretty disappointing. I guess the bottom line is that under austere conditions (WTSHTF), it doesn’t look like mother nature is going to provide us with the equivalent of our modern pharmacy. In a long term collapse, preventative medicine, simple surgery, orthopedics, midwifery/obstetrics will be left. Life spans will be shorter. You won’t be able to prolong your death by a month with a $250,000 ICU stay if the technology isn’t there. – Simple Country Doctor…
