JWR’s Recommendations of the Week

Here are JWR’s Recommendations of the Week for various media and tools of interest to SurvivalBlog readers. This week the focus is on Victorinox Swiss Army knives.

Movies:

Ben-Hur: 50th Anniversary Edition. JWR’s Comment: The recent remake pales in comparison. Charlton Heston’s performance as the leading man is great, and so is the film-making.

Gear (Victorinox)

Victorinox Swiss Army Sportsman II Pocket Knife. JWR’s Comments:  The Victorinox is a perennial favorite gift for Christmas and Hanukkah–and for good reason. They (along with the Wenger brand) are the original, and the best! Beware of the ubiquitous cheap Chinese replicas. They will simply not last or hold an edge like the Swiss-made originals.

Powerex MH-C9000 WizardOne Charger-Analyzer for 4 AA or AAA NiMH BatteriesJWR’s Comments: This is the best charger for preppers and for RV or pickup camper owners, because it can use either 120 VAC input power or 12 VDC input power.  This eliminates the inefficiency of using an AC to DC inverter.  (There is huge waste in the DC to AC and then back to DC transitions!)

  1. I have the SAK Sportsman that I have been carrying for the past 15+ years. It still holds an edge and I highly recommend these knives. I have cleaned many a rabbit, squirrel, fish, and even a deer using my knife.

  2. JWR,

My suggestion if it has not already been mentioned,

3M Tegaderm Transparent Adhesive Film Dressing.

From experience I recently sliced most of the top of one of my knuckles off unpackaging a factory sharp Morakniv knive*. While I’m not proud of my accomplishment the Tegederm bandage helped heal the wound nicely. The air holes accelerated the healing and what impressed me was the debridement of the outer edge of the skin leaving very little scar tissue because of the air holes.

*Morakniv knives in general. Good quality (may be Japanese steel with Swedish design) for the price. The partial tangs are still reasonable. Ragweedforge.com has a nice selection plus is a locally owned in upstate New York. Shipping and handling is $6 per order (not per item) anywhere in the US.
Also, at the price one could buy many knives that would make a good bartering item in SHTF times.

Ontario Spec Plus Gen II SP50 Knife is also a good knife for the price. The ESEE knives are somewhere twice the price. The handle can be upgraded if desired.

And The Ka-Bar knife for around fifty dollars is an old tried and true ‘friend’ to have around.

As I mentioned before, Hamiltonbooks.com has discounted books over a wide range of topics including survival, your books included which I get for friends. The “Native American Ethnobotany” book at fifty-five dollars while not cheap has thousands of listed uses for plants. Chris McNab’s books are easy to read.
Thanks for notice of Pallidan books recently.

For Floridian Survival Blog readers Eattheweeds.com blog by Green Deane is very good for indigenous edible plants as Florida is different from the rest of the country in various ways. While people are devising ways to get heat, we are trying to get rid of heat for most of the year. And bugs. One last suggestion, I recommend people look up their local USDA or University Agricultural Department websites. There is wealth of free tried information of local conditions from structures to plants.

    Thank you
    Best

  3. JWR:
I agree with you about Charlton Hestons performance in Ben Her far superior. I miss mr Heston outstanding rep of the NRA. I still remember a outstanding quote from a speech he gave, “Political Correctness is tyranny with manners!” Rest In Peace Mr. Heston.
