To be prepared for a crisis, every Prepper must establish goals and make long-term and short-term plans. In this column, the SurvivalBlog editors review their week’s prep activities and planned prep activities for the coming week. These range from healthcare and gear purchases to gardening, ranch improvements, bug out bag fine-tuning, and food storage. This is something akin to our Retreat Owner Profiles, but written incrementally and in detail, throughout the year. We always welcome you to share your own successes and wisdom in your e-mailed letters. We post many of those –or excerpts thereof — in this column, in the Odds ‘n Sods Column, and in the Snippets column. Let’s keep busy and be ready!
Jim Reports:
A lot of my time in the past week got expended with trips to town. These included a 2+ hour drive to pick up an antique Mauser and some ammunition, lunch and a consulting session at retreat/ranch in our region, and a trip to ferry two vehicles to a body shop for a bumper swap. The latter was to transplant the very heavy-duty deer and elk-protective bumper from our old SUV onto our new one. (Well new to us, that is. It is about a decade old.)
On one of our trips to town, we bought 8 bales of straw, because we had been running low. They nicked us $5.25 per bale. Ouch!
Otherwise, it was just a normal winter week of livestock care and feeding, other chores, and writing.
Now, over to Lily…
Avalanche Lily Reports:
Dear Readers,
I do not have much to say this week. The weeks are absolutely flying by. I’m not feeling like I have a grasp on my time to accomplish things. The afternoon temperatures were in the high thirties and low forties with some rain that allowed for the ice rink parking lot to begin to melt.
We had some sun this week. Thank You, Lord!
This week I cleaned out the Hen House.
I spent three afternoons chopping a path in the one-to-two inch-thick ice of a section of our driveway about the length of our house and four feet wide, then shoveled that ice to the side. Our half-grown puppies H. and K. were out with me and enjoyed running after the thrown ice chunks.
We went stock up shopping, twice. I reorganized our large chest freezer in the garage, and boiled down two more of our own frozen chickens into chicken broth and pressure-canned eighteen pints.
I did a lot of vacuuming, cooking, and laundry, as usual…
I went skiing a couple of times. I walked the driveway a couple of times. I lifted weights and did sit-ups, twice.
And I went with Jim to the on-site consulting meeting.
I read chapters 16-21 in Genesis in Hebrew and Latin. I also spent some time reviewing ancient Hebrew letter pictographs.
May you all have a very blessed and safe week.
– Avalanche Lily, Rawles
