SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “JWR”. Today, we focus on stress inoculation gun training.
Stress Inoculation Gun Training
I spotted this training video, over at Full30.com: Stress Inoculation Training. JWR”s Comments: I can’t over-emphasize the importance of gun training that involves plenty of physical exertion. That is realistic training. As soon as you have the basic mechanics and fundamentals down, then you shouId add stress to your training drills–both time constraints and physical exertion. Get trained to the point that you are ready to attend team tactics training, such as that offered by Max Velocity. That will be your “Finishing School.”
I can recall as a 12-year old, proudly showing my father a paper target with an unusually tight group that I had deliberately shot with a .22 pump action, at 30 yards. He said, “That looks great, Son. Now, do 20 sit-ups and 10 push-ups an then right away shoot me another ten-shot group.” The results were predictable. I’ve never forgotten that important lesson.
I highly recommend attending competitive shooting matches. The stress of competition is only a fraction of what is felt in combat, but at least it gives you a good idea of how poorly you might shoot on a two-way range! The old saying is: “Your best day in a gunfight will be worse than your worst day at the range.”

Toxic Air Findings
Reader Henry K. sent this from Zero Hedge: Toxic Air Kills 100,000 Americans Per Year, Costs Economy Billions, Study Finds. JWR’s Comment: This is just one more reason to move to a lightly-populated region! But don’tlive down-wind of a major farm that uses herbicides and pesticides. Here is a brief quote:
“Air pollution is poisoning Americans: A new study links air pollution spewed from industrial factories, motor vehicles, and farmlands to approximately 107,000 premature deaths each year.
The report, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, said the economic toll of air pollution costs taxpayers $866 billion per year.”
Triton Malware Versus Critical Infrastructure
Mysterious safety-tampering malware infects a second critical infrastructure site. (Thanks to C.D. for the link.) Here is a pericope about the new “Triton” malware:
“Now, researchers at FireEye—the same security firm that discovered Triton and its ties to Russia—say they have uncovered an additional intrusion that used the same malicious software framework against a different critical infrastructure site. As was the case in the first intrusion, the attackers focused most of their resources on the facility’s OT, or operational technology, which are systems for monitoring and managing physical processes and devices.
“After establishing an initial foothold on the corporate network, the Triton actor focused most of their effort on gaining access to the OT network,” FireEye researchers wrote in a report published Wednesday. “They did not exhibit activities commonly associated with espionage, such as using key loggers and screenshot grabbers, browsing files, and/or exfiltrating large amounts of information. Most of the attack tools they used were focused on network reconnaissance, lateral movement, and maintaining presence in the target environment.”
Once the attackers in the new attack gained access to the site’s SIS controllers, they appeared to focus solely on maintaining this control. This focus involved strategically limiting other activities to lessen the chances of being discovered.
The discovery has unearthed a new set of never-before-seen custom tools that shows the attackers have been operational since as early as 2014. The existence of these tools, and the attackers’ demonstrated interest in operational security, lead FireEye researchers to believe there may be other sites beyond the two already known where the Triton attackers were or still are present.”

Climate Chaos – The Pinkertons Are Ready
Climate Chaos Is Coming – and the Pinkertons Are Ready. (Out thanks to John M., for the link.) Here is a quote that will resonate with many SurvivalBlog readers:
“I was seated in the rear row next to Rakov, a marketing officer who, at 51, had recently shifted his career from more traditional P.R. to Pinkerton. He was now fully fluent in the language of tactical response. He chimed in to observe that preparing for a disaster can carry its own risks. He gave the example of a drought. “If a client has food and water and all the other stuff,” he said, “then they become a target.” López Portillo and Paz Larach uttered small words of consensus in Spanish, while scanning through email on their phones. “And if and when desperate people discovered that cache of water and food,” he continued, it was the Pinkertons’ job to protect it at whatever cost.”

@ climate chaos… Consider this….
“So over the last five years, as the company watched the demand for incident response skyrocket, it began to pour resources into building three data-and-information-gathering centers: one each in Seattle and The Hague, which focus mainly on crunching big data to predict crime trends worldwide, and a “Global Intelligence Center” in Mexico City, which is geared more toward the operational response to those trends.”
The above quote in relation to the recent discussion on Sblog about data mining. These process are certainly connected. While some of you may have a wide variety of understanding on climate change, make no mistake, the real disaster here is the destruction of civil and constitutional rights as to “secure” the system. For those of you who read this article, pay attention to how many times the author is attempting to associate you, the American citizen, to a corporation. This is a narrative that says insecurity is in the future, so let us walk all over your individual constitutional rights, right now.
Regardless of whether you believe in man-made climate change or not, the entire security apparatus of most states (including the US military), public and private, are using climate change as a narrative to increase government surveillance.
Well said, Muddykid. Keep your head down, neighbor.
Carry on
Climate Chaos – The Pinkertons Are Ready
Best sentence in the whole article is “You aren’t prepared enough, and the government is too clumsy to save you.” Read the article. Very interesting, funny and informative.
I do not have a lot love for the ACLU but this case with the students is certainly a just cause. What a person, “student” does when not on the campus is of no concern to a capricious school administration. Their authority ends when a student steps off of the school property. I hope they win a very large settlement that sends a message to other schools that what a student does when not on campus is their parents responsibility not
the responsibility or the right of some politically correct power hungry administration jerk.
Re: Stress Inoculation Gun Training.
Excellent advice. If I may add a few points:
The highest level of stress is experienced during kill or be killed situations. Each individual may process this stress differently, but many experience a loss of fine motor skills, auditory exclusion, tunnel vision, mentally and/or physically “freezing up”, etc. Lt. Col. Dave Grossman covers these occurrences (and others) in his books “On Combat” and “On Killing”.
The ultimate goal is to train as close to the edge of real-world situations as possible, while maintaining a high degree of safety (proper medical supplies on-site, people who know how to use them correctly under stress, hospital location map/routes, and so on). This is why force-on-force training is a must (ideally using Simunition/UTM rounds, to include medical – GSW treatment, proper tourniquet use – and all under low-light conditions), but must be built up to properly, as Mr. Rawles wrote.
The inclusion of physical exertion and a timer add stress to body and mind, but one must strive to maintain a calm mind in the midst of chaos, and that comes from constant work on that two-way range. These are all perishable skills, and they must be honed constantly.
To paraphrase Archilochus: “We don’t rise to the occasion, we fall to the level of our training.”
My firearm training has almost always been outside on my own property. I’m retirement age but I’ve only been to a gun range about two times in my life because I’ve always lived in the country where I can shoot when and what I want. Shooting down in the back forty is a bit more real world shooting in my opinion, at least for me. When it’s windy and dirty with insects buzzing around my eyes and ears and with the sun in my eyes as I lay on the ground with sweat dripping down my face…..well it doesn’t get more real life than that. As far as shooting competition goes I certainly see the advantages of it but it’s not for me. However I have been in a life or death situation twice in my life where it looked like I would surely be killed and I instantly focused everything in me and saved my own life. I believe I would do the same again in a kill or be killed situation concerning firearms. I pray I never find out.
