This is the birthday of Émile François Zola, a novelist and essayist. He is most often remembered as the author of “J’accuse” (I Accuse!), his lengthy open letter to president Félix Faure, which accused the French government of anti-semitism.

And not only that, but Emile was right! As was Sen. McCarthy. There WERE Communists in the US State Dept. when he made the accusation. Zola was instrumental in getting Dreyfus exonerated of the crime of being a traitor to France, and vindicated. Dreyfus spent years in solitary on Devil’s Island for crimes he didn’t commit. Viva Zola! The closest we have to him in the US is Ann Coulter, and she does pretty good.
