Economics & Investing For Preppers

Here are the latest news items and commentary on current economics news, market trends, stocks, investing opportunities, and the precious metals markets. In this column, JWR also covers hedges, derivatives, and various obscura. This column emphasizes JWR’s “tangibles heavy” investing strategy and contrarian perspective. Today, we look at a possible rise in the Argentine Peso. (See the Forex and Cryptos section.)

Precious Metals:

Both silver and gold appear to be building a base for a price breakout in the new year.  I’m also bullish on platinum, although the more “industrial” price of platinum may dip as we slip into the Biden Recession. But, then again, if a regional war or World War, The Third(TM) breaks out, then the price of platinum will surely zoom up to stratospheric heights.  I’m so confident in the prospects for silver that I increased the pricing divisor to 20.5 times face value for anyone who wishes to pay with pre-1965 U.S. silver coinage when they buy a gun or knife from my Elk Creek Company business.

In my recent shopping trips to both a Big Box hardware store with orange decor and a Farm & Ranch store, I’ve been noticing hardware price increases of around 20 to 30% in the past year. Anything made of steel or brass has gone up dramatically. For example, I just bought some threaded “Chicago Screw” rivets for repairing horse tack. A tiny package of five nickel-plated two-piece Chicago Screws cost me $3.99. I am nearly certain that they were priced at $2.99, last year.

Avalanche Lily mentioned that her most recently-purchased batch of sweetened condensed milk cans was made of very thin steel – and in fact she described them as “dangerously thin.” Skimping on packaging is just another example of “shrinkflation.”

Forex & Cryptos:

One of my consulting clients who dabbles in the Forex mentioned that he was buying call options on the Argentine Peso. The new government, he says, has a good chance of getting the currency’s rampant inflation under control. If the Argy Peso does indeed bounce, then his options may provide him a substantial gain. Time will tell…
