Montana just got a little bit more bureaucratic. From the Montana Fish & Wildlife website:

“Beginning July 1, everyone ages 12 and older will need a Montana Conservation License to access most state lands. This includes all types of recreation—launching watercraft, hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, etc.”

JWR’s Comment: I heard from reader N.S. in Montana that there is a small optional add-on fee that someone can pay when they register a vehicle in Montana, for this. And it is also a non-optional fee included when getting a Montana hunting or fishing license. This just goes to show that the quest for revenue by state governments is insatiable — even in a largely rural state like Montana.
