SurvivalBlog Readers’ & Editors’ Snippets

This weekly Snippets column is a collection of short items: responses to posted articles, practical self-sufficiency items, how-tos, lessons learned, tips and tricks, and news items — both from readers and from SurvivalBlog’s editors. Note that we may select some long e-mails for posting as separate letters.

S.4986, the Stop Harassing Owners of Rifles Today Act (SHORT) Act needs more co-sponsors. This bill would remove short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and other weapons from regulation under the National Firearms Act (NFA). Given the ATF’s recent arbitrary redefinition of arm-braced pistols as SBRs, this bill is quite important. If elected, it would keep millions of American gun owners with arm-braced guns from becoming felons, overnight. Please contact both of your state’s U.S. Senators, and ask them to co-sponsor this bill.

“I always enjoy SurvivalBlog and SaraSues’ contributions. After reading her latest snippet regarding buying pigs to raise for bacon I have a few observations based on my experience raising my own hogs. To raise a pig to butcher weight, especially a weight required to have enough fat for bacon (280 lbs +-) is very expensive. The infrastructure required to raise a few pigs to that size must be very robust. Hogs are destructive. In my AO (central Florida) raising a hog to butcher weight, in my case 180 pounds, the cost to end product ratio has put me out of raising my own hogs. The last pig I raised to butcher cost me $1,200 which includes paying the butcher $5.00/lb hanging weight for his work. This netted me 80 pounds of finished pork from a 180-pound hog. That’s $15.00 per pound. That does not include bacon because I didn’t raise my hogs to be fat enough for bacon. I do wish SaraSue best of luck if she moves forward in the hog business just please go forward with eyes wide open and do much research before jumping in. Thank You, and blessings to all.”

“This past week was all about getting ready for more potential bank collapses.  I made sure I had enough cash at home.  I pre-paid some bills.  I stocked up on animal feed, filled the gas tank, and reviewed inventory.  I changed my auto deposits to a local credit union.  I had set up an account at the local credit union last year in case I needed it.  My strategy was/is to have a national bank, a regional bank, a local bank, and a local credit union to spread money out over.  I’m not in the stock market, but I requested my mother’s investments be quickly reviewed.

Being already stocked up is a blessing during times like these because my stress level wasn’t as high as it could have been.  My house was full of visiting family including my elderly mother who required constant attention.  All the big projects went on the back burner, but I did contact a lot of local farms seeking bull services for my Jersey dairy cow.  I contacted several Dexter breeders trying to find the right age bull to purchase.  So far, I’ve come up empty.  I got 2 more barn cats this week for a total of 3.  I have one more thing to do this week and that is go to Costco to stock up on a few things, but life will keep going without those things.  Then, I’m going to hunker down and just watch events from the perceived safety of the Farm.  I will spend my time doing things that matter, including things that give me joy.  I continue to pray.  Be calm everyone and stay safe.”
