a ‘windshield’ experience
In his superb DESERT SOLITAIRE, author Ed Abbey suggests the ‘knowing’ of a place begins with me shutting off the ignition key, stepping out of my vehicle, lacing my boots.
Pack my lunch, abandon my illusion of safety, wander off into the wildness…
What comes next?
The knowing of a place may lead to me knowing me differently.
Fact is, I bet on it.
I admit I am not much for this whole ‘civilization’ experiment of the past ten thousand years or so.
I prefer quiet.
Solitude.
The ‘seeing’ with my ears, ‘hearing’ with my eyes.
Fact is, I seem to have one foot in the pre-apocalyptic hunter-gatherer world of my distant Keltic ancestors.
The post-apocalyptic world won’t be much of a change for me.
Although I am going to miss chocolates!
Saw the one reference to Jackson Hole and I let out a snarky chuckle. Survival Blog readers beware, a deep blue liberal enclave in otherwise wonderful Wyoming. Passed through there last summer. Quickly realized it was not our cup of tea. Then saw a restaurant with a “Defund the Police” sign out front and knew it was time to move on.
Shame the place didn’t get robbed..
Good luck with defunding Jackson. Mere millionaires are being forced to move on by the billionaires. There is a reason why the Fed has an annual meeting there, and it is not because Jackson’s homeowners give 2 shots about the working people who serve their dinner and clean their houses. I live very close to Jackson and haven’t been there for any reason in 5 years.

Rent a Subaru to visit and you’ll blend right in. Eat tofu out of a plastic tub and granola from a baggie.
Ha! One of our vehicles is a Subaru. Not because we’re liberal hippies but because the Subaru handles the type of winter weather here in north Idaho. No, I wouldn’t have had one when I lived in Wyoming (18 years, and husband was born and raised there) but here, they are ice eatin’ machines.
I always threaten to have a bumper sticker made for the Subaru that says “I DRIVE A SUBARU TO SAVE GAS SO I CAN BUY MORE AMMO”, just so no one confuses me with a liberal hippie…. : )
If you change Subaru to Prius, I have actually seen your bumper sticker, at least a picture online.

I had the most spiritual experience this morning as the sun broke through the clouds. It was 2 degrees and I was out with the dog’s. It had recently snowed a good bit, but this morning it was still, quiet, and beautiful, other than the puppies chaotically chasing one another. I looked up at the trees and suddenly the air was full of “glitter”! And there were “diamonds” all over the ground! I gasped at the beauty. I often imagined as a little girl, that the angels all had jobs and some of them were in charge of the clouds, arranging them in fantastical shapes. I’d lay in the grass staring up at the sky trying to make out just what the angels were up to. This morning I thought of the angels as snow fairies who were having fun creating incredible refractions with snow and sun. I was very thankful in that magical moment. Ooooh, it was cold!
I love the look of glitter in the air. Crisp, clean, quiet. I love when the fog is freezing on trees and makes the hoar frost glisten.
