SurvivalBlog’s News From The American Redoubt

This weekly column features news stories and event announcements from around the American Redoubt region. (Idaho, Montana, eastern Oregon, eastern Washington, and Wyoming.) Much of the region is also more commonly known as The Inland Northwest. We also mention companies of interest to preppers and survivalists that are located in the American Redoubt region. Today, we focus on Yellowstone National Park’s efforts to boost its Trumpeter Swan population. (See the Wyoming section.)

Ranchers talk with USFWS chief about de-listing grizzly bears. The article begins:

“The nation’s top fish and wildlife official now has a better understanding of what some Montana ranchers think should be done about grizzly bears.

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service director Aurelia Skipwith and U.S. Senator Steve Daines of Montana hosted a roundtable discussion with ranchers on Friday morning in Great Falls.

The ranchers shared their experiences with grizzly bears. Many believe the bears are no longer endangered and should be taken off of the federal endangered species list so management of the bears can be turned over to the state.”

No sign of cooling down: Despite fall’s arrival, Spokane’s housing market to remain competitive. Here is an excerpt:

“Despite fall’s arrival – the time of year when housing markets across the country usually see a cooling in activity that matches the weather – Realtors say the Spokane-area market shows little signs of slowing down.

‘It’s a pretty competitive scenario for buyers right now,’ said Tom Clark, president of the Spokane Association of Realtors, adding although there was an uptick in listings during the last couple of weeks of September, it was common to see multiple offers and homes selling above asking price.

Spokane’s housing market is typically strong in the spring with a lull during summer as people go on vacation. In the fall, activity tends to pick up again, Clark said.

This year was different.

‘In this case, it didn’t slow down for the summer,’ Clark said. ‘It just kept going full speed ahead.’

Record low mortgage interest rates and lack of available inventory pushed Spokane’s median housing price to more than $300,000 for the first time this summer.”

Yellowstone releases trumpeter swans to restore population. A snippet:

“On Saturday, September 19, staff from Yellowstone National Park, the Wyoming Wetlands Society, and Ricketts Conservation Fund released eight young trumpeter swans (cygnets) at Alum Creek in Hayden Valley.

This release is part of an ongoing restoration project to increase territorial pairs of swans which have undergone a decades-long decline in the park. From a high of over 60 birds and 17 territorial pairs in the early 1960s, to only four birds in 2009 and 2010, the swan population has declined for a variety of reasons.”

  1. YAY! It’s Book Bomb Day! Wish I could’ve ordered 10, but ordered 2 from Amazon. Best wishes on your book sales! I think this book will make great Christmas presents for family members who have become interested in “prepping”. I might order more. One year I purchased “Go bags” for everyone in the family along with the supplies to fill them – oooh, maybe 10 years ago, and they still have their bags. We got together and each person grabbed a backpack and we had fun filling with the various supplies. While we were filling the bags we discussed what items would be important and why. Some members thought I’d lost my mind and others thought it was a great idea. There was also one emergency radio for each family. Great family activity.
