JWR’s Recommendations of the Week:

Here are JWR’s Recommendations of the Week for various media and tools of interest to SurvivalBlog readers. This week the focus is on the new movie The Highwaymen. (See the Movies section.)

Books:

This book was recommended by Wendy McElroy: Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder, by Caroline Fraser. The New York Times Book Review described it:

“An absorbing new biography [that] deserves recognition as an essential text…. For anyone who has drifted into thinking of Wilder’s ‘Little House’ books as relics of a distant and irrelevant past, reading Prairie Fires will provide a lasting cure…. Meanwhile, ‘Little House’ devotees will appreciate the extraordinary care and energy Fraser devotes to uncovering the details of a life that has been expertly veiled by myth.”

Movies & Television:

For those with a Netflix account, SurvivalBlog readers should be sure to watch the new Kevin Costner movie The Highwaymen. This film has some violent scenes, so it is definitely not for children.

Take a look at this brief clip from the movie to get a taste of what it was like to go shopping for guns, just before the National Firearms Act of 1934 was enacted. Those were the days!

  1. BOOK: The Essential Truths of The Christian Faith, by R.C. Sproul
BOOK: Chosen by God, by Dr. R.C. Sproul

DVD Series: Foundations, An Overview of Systematic Theology, also by Dr. R.C. Sproul

Dr. Sproul was my Theology Professor in Seminary and holds a special place in my heart.

  2. The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association ~ April 27, 2016. = Genocide: Calling It What It Is. =

… “ISIS bombings, beheadings, torture, rape and wanton killing of religious minorities led many religious groups, members of Congress and world leaders to urge the U.S. State Department to label the group’s actions genocide. The European Parliament applied that label in February.

But it took a House Resolution, passed unanimously March 15, to force the State Department’s hand, requiring a response by March 17. After the State Department initially signaled that it would not meet that deadline, Secretary of State John Kerry finally issued a statement that ISIS’ actions constitute genocide.

“The fact is that Daesh [another name for ISIS] kills Christians because they are Christians; Yazidis because they are Yazidis; Shia because they are Shia,” Kerry said. “Its entire worldview is based on eliminating those who do not subscribe to its perverse ideology.”
[GGHD ~ Shia are Muslims, too of a different line from Sunnis]

Many welcomed Kerry’s declaration. Nate Lance, advocacy manager for International Christian Concern (ICC), stated that his organization was grateful “that Secretary Kerry has decided to call ISIS for what it is: genocidal. Their killing, enslavement, human trafficking, rape and destruction of Christian and religious minority communities in Iraq and Syria can be classified as nothing else.”

Still, Lance and others questioned why such extreme measures were needed to force the State Department to issue its statement.

“What took so long?” asked Franklin Graham, president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan’s Purse. “The fact is, genocide has been carried out by Muslims for centuries. The Turks committed genocide against Armenians at the turn of the last century. There used to be a large Jewish and Christian population on the Arabian Peninsula, now Saudi Arabia. They’re not there today—they have been exterminated or forced to leave over the centuries under Islam. Muslims throughout Africa and Asia continue to carry out genocide. Why? Because the Quran teaches followers of Islam to kill and destroy nonbelievers. This is what their prophet did, and true followers of Islam want to emulate their prophet. It’s time our government recognizes it is Islam that fuels this hatred and death. Call it what it is.”

Franklin was not alone. Retired Lt. Col. Ralph Peters said the Obama administration was basically “shamed” into making the genocide designation.

“This administration still romanticizes Islam,” Peters said. “It still finds Christians somehow distasteful. It’s almost as if the administration feels Christians have no real right to be in the Middle East. And Christians were there a long time before Muslims were—six centuries.”

[GGHD = Now days, the largest group of victims due to Muslim violence are fellow Muslims. We should encourage the majority of peaceful Muslims to speak out ~louder against the violent Jihadists.]

      1. M-ray, according to the limited polling-date about ordinary Muslim beliefs, ~you’re probably right.~ … Yet hopefully, the Natural-Law encoded in the human-heart will emerge; particularly ~ “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
[Appartently, there are ~written documents in Islam, where this Natural-Law applies to ~only fellow Muslims, and NOT to anyone else.] … But, God works through all human-hearts.

  3. The Promise, (2017) about the Armenian Genocide, staring Christian Bale is currently available on Amazon Prime. Wife and I enjoyed it very much.
Incidentally, I watched a documentary on how difficult it was to make this movie, and the great efforts to keep the true subject matter a secret. Seems there was, is, opposition to this story being told.
God Bless the filmmakers for having the courage to make this. I guess not all of Hollywood is evil.

  4. Watch “the highwaymen”. Accurate or not, it’s a good flick, especially for us experienced citizens. Reminds me of “secondhand lions” which you also should have seen.

    1. My wife & I recently watched The Highwaymen, & I concur. It shows how the use of guns was freely allowed in our society in the 1930s, for good & for evil. Also noticed that those lawmen were more interested in getting the murderers than in reading them their rights. While not recommended for children, I think it’d be good for older teens & young adults to see what our society was like before gun laws.

I’ve been looking for an emergency chocolate ration, specifically tropical chocolate bars [hard to find a current source] and had never heard of Scho-ka-kola.

    Thanks and appreciation for posting…

  6. I have an in bed diesel tank in my pick up, when both tanks are topped off I have a 2,000 mile range if I’m running light. With my travel trailer it gets me close to 1,000 miles before refueling. As a for instance, we topped up in West Yellowstone, Montana, then hitched up and drove to Moab, Utah without needing to refuel. Well worth it to me. Installation is simple, takes a couple of hours with simple hand tools and a drill. And my in bed tank has a tool box on top so it doesn’t look like a fuel tank.

Mind you, these cannot legally be used for gasoline and have a constant rate if flow due to federal law and general safety. But diesel is perfectly fine.

    1. There are in bed transfer tanks that are approved for gasoline transport. They are more expensive and require / have a DOT plaque. They cannot be piped into the vehicle fuel system, transfer only. There are also gasoline approved 12vdc tank mounted pumps with hose/nozzle like at a gas station so numerous vehicle tanks can be refilled from the in bed transfer tank.

  7. Prairie Fires is clearly a leftist effort to push the positive aspects of LIW’s books out by showing that she was an example of what today is called “White Privilege”. I’m glad I didn’t have to purchase the book, read it through my libraries digital loan system.

We also walked away from Netflix when I saw what the majority of their programming consisted of.

  8. I have the GL.Inet version without the antennae. It was under $50 IIRC.

    1. be careful of the micro USB power connector as it can come loose as it is not a thru-hole. If you are mobile or connect, disconnect, or it drops or is hit it might be a problem.

    2. It runs OpenWRT, that has multiple adblock options (also blocking malware, spyware, etc.). I have it lock out google and facebook and their minions. Also I’m running Anonymize.com VPN on it.

    3. I have a USB (!) hotspot which it works with. I can easily unplug it and see if it is working or not – I’m not sure if my carrier bothers with spying on hotspots. I can also plug it directly into my phone or tablet.
