The Beecher quote is OK as far as it goes, But Beecher was the one American preacher who did more damage to Christianity than any other before or since. He ushered in the era of “social gospel” where the spiritual wasn’t nearly as important as the physical. He was an advocate of Darwinism, including a kind of social Darwinism where society is evolving to a higher and higher place. Even proponents of such a concept now have to admit that society is not any less evil than previously. Beecher diminished the role of God in the affairs of men. Not a nice guy.
