On June 16, 1896, the people of Japan awoke to find that many of their friends, neighbors, and family had perished in the night due to a tsunami. A disturbance in the Japan Trench resulted in an earthquake that reached 7.6 on the Richter scale. This caused a large displacement of water, which caused the tsunami to hit Japan about 20 minutes later. In some places, the wave may have reached up to 115 feet high.
