The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. Good news! The pending Defense Authorization Act has provisions to transfer thousands of Army surplus 1911 firearms to the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

The Age of Junk Science

John Stossel had an interesting segment on his show: The Chocolate Hoax and Media Sensationalism. A media science writer put together a piece on how you could lose weight by eating one chocolate bar a day and used twisted data and facts, ignoring the real science. He then published this piece in a new science journal that did not depend upon peer review for acceptance. The media news, including ABC and TV affiliates along with magazines like Prevention ran with the article. It is a good warning to be skeptical of anything you pick up from the general media.

First Amendment

In a glaring example of why the founders included the First Amendment in our Constitution, a London assembly has stepped off the deep end. The assembly has voted to have pro-life Christians arrested and prosecuted for peacefully protesting abortion clinics and praying for women. Video documentation shows that the protesters stand quietly, offering support and prayer, but not blocking or harassing. Anti-protesters, on the other hand use bull-horns, shouting, insults and even occasionally violence in response. Guess who gets targeted by the government for “harassment”? If not for the Constitution, that would be us. Thanks to D.S. for the link.

Bundy Trial

The Department of Justice has opened a probe into federal prosecutors of the recent trial of Cliven Bundy. A mistrial had been called because the prosecutors deliberately withheld evidence from the defense and lied about it. No word yet on whether the prosecution will pursue another trial against Bundy though. Thanks to K.B. for the link.

Possible Terror Attack

Reader P.S. sent in this link on the police shooting in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania this week. Ahmed El-Mofty allegedly fired on multiple police officers on Friday from three different locations before he was shot and killed by police. Only one officer was injured with non-life-threatening wounds. Local police are refraining from declaring it a terror attack, but Homeland Security has refreshingly issued a statement on Twitter referring to the shooting as a “terror attack”. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck… It is good to see some semblance of sanity seeping back into the DHS with the word “terrorism” no longer banned.

Gun Control

Who was it who said “Gun control is having a firm grip on the gun and hitting exactly what you aim at”? I know, preaching to the choir here, but Fire Breathing Christian has a good short article on gun control. It’s not about the elimination of guns. It’s not about removal of guns from the culture. The whole concept is about consolidating weapons into the hands of the most dangerous organization in all of human history – The government. It’s about making sure the inhumane abuses of government get to continue and go unpunished.

Making Due After Disasters

This has been a tough year for some. California is still on fire with many still homeless and nowhere to go. The South and Southeastern states are still recovering from the beating they took during hurricane season and Islands in the Caribbean are still devastated even though they have mostly dropped from sight in the main stream media. Reader P.S. has asked SurvivalBlog readers to remember that many who celebrate this season will be doing so in a far more meager way this year. If the Lord leads you in that direction, you might try to find a way to help those who are in need. At the very least, continue to pray for them.

Army Surplus 1911

The Civilian Marksmanship Program recently updated its website with the requirements, guidelines and background checks needed to purchase an Army surplus 1911 .45 pistol in 2018. The Army is expected to transfer thousands of these .45s under the National Defense Authorization Act that is currently awaiting Trumps signature. The program caps the number of transfers at 10,000 per year. If you love this enduring symbol of American freedom, you may want to keep an eye on these proceedings. Thanks to L.G. for the information.

Please send your news tips to HJL. (Either via e-mail of via ourContact form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who watch news that is important to them. Due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” news. We often “get the scoop” on news that is most likely ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!

  1. My Grandfather got his 1911 from the CMP in 1964. He paid $17 and some change which included shipping. I suppose this new lot might be a bit more expensive….Gramps gave me the 1911 in 1983, one of my favorite guns, great shooter.
personally, I’d rather see the issued and used by our troops, but if they don’t want them I’ll take them over those puny 9 mils they carry!

  2. Regarding the junk science article. Two things.

First an amusing story I read. I slightly overweight dietician teacher decided to do a personal junk food experiment to show his class how bad junk food was. He went on a strict diet of things like Twinkies and HoHos and stuff like that. He exercised strict portion control however and ate only the recommended calories for his ideal weight. To his great surprise, he lost weight.

Another corollary. A young man I have known for years since he was little is a math teacher and general nerd. He was always pretty soft growing up. He got involved in this club that studies nutritional studies trying to glean what is valid and what is nonsense. They destroy almost all the studies on mathematical grounds. The group has settled on an all meat and dairy diet. No grains. Virtually no vegetables. Their research has lead them to conclude that grains are bad and vegetables are useless. Neither good or bad. And they admit that their conclusions are only weakly supported but in their view the most supported. Their predominate conclusion is that there is almost no valid food science.

Since adopting his nearly all meat diet my young friends soft body has transformed into a rock hard bull strong body. He is of course in his peak years and he would be the first to say that the evidence for what he is doing is weak but it is quite interesting to see the transformation.

    1. There is no agreement among people, educated people, common people, scientists, doctors, etc. about what is a healthy diet and what is an unhealthy diet. The opinions are diverse and those who hold those opinions strongly believe they are right and everyone else is wrong. Probably the closest to the truth is it is all good, perhaps some in moderation and some effort to eat a diverse diet to assure access to all of the various nutrients the human body needs but without the existence of some kind of disease that prohibits or requires particular food it’s all good.

  3. A good organization to donate to is Crisis Response International http://www.criout.com They provide Christian disaster response to hard hit areas. Currently they are gearing up to return to Puerto Rico to continue retooling houses. We had teams there most of last fall. We also responded to Harvey and Irma this year. We are also planning to respond to Dominica late next month.

  4. Nina Planck’s Real Food is probably the best single book on nutrition. She grew up on a farm, and decided to learn to eat properly, nearly destroying her health in the process. The book is quite funny in its way, and will cure you forever of extreme diet theories.

One factor that most writers leave out is: where are you ancestors from, and what did they mostly eat? This means that they were in that place for about a thousand years or so. If you northern European, that means meat and grain, if you are Mongolian, dairy and meat, if you are Phillipino, fish, rice and vegetables, if you are Inuit, meat, meat and meat, and if you are Egyptian, grain and vegetables.

If like most Americans, you are a full or partial Euro-mutt, then you have to go with the majority ancestry, but listen carefully to how your body reacts to different foods and choose accordingly. You may be one-sixteenth Mongolian, but if all those genes wound up in your cells, then you will be going nuts for dairy, and should eat lots of it.

This is one of the major reasons why no single form of diet works for everyone.

  5. Junk science:
Da,…….what a bunch of motards. Keep up the the good work Stossel, keep the socialist media motards honest.
    First Amendment:
To the people of GB, do not give up or give in. Keep up the good fight. We The People need to keep a sharp eye on our employees ( our elected government officials) to make sure they do not try that trash on U.S. Soil! Remember fellow citizens they work for us, so hold their feet to the fire!
    Bundy Trial:
Praise the lord, hot dog, praise the lord! They need to open a investigation on that judge as well!
    Possible Terror Attack:
Well I’ll be…. Finally someone at Homeland Security is not asleep at the switch! If ya’ll can’t tell I like good news, especially when The our employees get it right.
    Second Amendment:
Who was it said ” Gun control is having a firm grip on the gun and hitting exactly what you aim at”?, I DID! Lmao.
    Rules to a gun fight:
    1) Bring a gun, preferably two guns, one for each hand!
    2) Invite all your friends who have guns, preferably two guns, one for each of their hands!
    3) Kill all the bad guys!
    4) Enjoy! Lmao.
    Making Due After Disasters:
My heart cry’s, my eyes cry, I cry for these people in such need and in such condition especially during the silly season, which supposed to be a cheerful time of the year. So, I have given what I can locally ( think southern Oregon the first line of defense against the golden hord coming out of Kommunist Kalifornia) and I give prayer. Dear lord please give these fine people peace and show them your light o’lord, amen. I would like to ask everyone here at SB that all ya’ll pray for these folks, thanx.
    Army Surplus 1911:
Yaaaaaaahooooooo!!!! Finally someone else is getting it right! Now in contrary to the to the Second Amendment article brought to us by Fire Breathing Christians, check it out ya’ll, our employees are selling our militaries used 1911 hardware to us at cut rate prices. Weather they work or need a little TLC or a complete overhaul grab one of these fine fire arms, there are tons of du it yourself manuals all over the place, rebuild them with quality parts! And be prepared, for ya know just in case! I told ya’ll I like good news! Thanx L.G. for the article.
Thanx to my SB family for letting me vent.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays ya’ll!

  6. Incredible what’s going on in London, the devil at work. Thank God for the 1st Amendment. Whenever people get all in a tizzy over the “Royal Family” I remind them that we fought a war to get away from that crap!
Re: the H’burg shooting I loved the witness’ comment at the end,”you shoot at the cops you get what you get” lol.
