In the French Caribbean, fear and looting grip the island in the wake of recent hurricanes. Chaos reigns in the streets and the strong take what they want. Politicians cry for armed European soldiers to come to their aid. Meanwhile, Texans have their own brand of law and order. This picture of the time honored tattoo placed upon looters is priceless. Hepatitis Outbreaks

SurvivalBlog reader P.S. sent in this article outlining a hepatitis A outbreak that has been declared in Los Angeles county. So far 10 cases have been confirmed among the high-risk homeless population. Four of those confirmed cases have been identified as individuals who spent time in San Diego which has also previously had a hepatitis A outbreak. You can get hepatitis A if you come into contact with an infected person’s feces or through contaminated food or objects including, water, drug paraphernalia and/or certain sexual practices.

Asset Forfeiture

Reader V.T. notified us that Illinois has just reformed it’s asset forfeiture laws in what appears to be a very positive way. We do not have confirmation or details at this time, but if you live in Illinois and/or are familiar with the laws in question, you might consider giving SurvivalBlog readers a heads up on what has changed.

Russia Gets it Right

Russia unveiled a monument to Mikhail Kalashnikov, inventor of the AK-47. While a Kremlin guard of honor stood to attention and the Russian national anthem was played, the statue was revealed with a Kalashnikov quote hewn onto the pedestal: “I created a weapon for the defense of my fatherland.” It’s too bad Americans can’t erect monuments to John Moses Browning, or Eugene Stoner, or any of the uniquely American great firearms architects. Instead we create powerpoint presentations on workforce diversity and harassment. Thanks to J.N. for the link.

Chicken Thief

According to this article sent in by reader J.C., four people asked to hold some chickens are a Colorado farm that prides itself on their humane treatment of animals. Though destined for consumption, the chickens lived a free range life on large pastures, were fed appropriately and humanely slaughtered unlike the large chicken farms. However, the four people promptly tucked the chickens under their arms and walked off with them. An animal rights group has publicly claimed responsibility for the thefts. They claim that the birds have been released at a “sanctuary”. The Larimer County Sheriff’s department is investigating and may file felony charges against the four.

The Dark Side of Amazon

If you’ve shopped on Amazon, you know about the recommended products when you view any particular product. It’s a great way to find associated products that may go well with the one you have. A few times, I’ve actually changed my selection based upon these recommendations. However, it is a complex algorithm that uses data like what other people have purchased and what your purchase history may be. Now the British are claiming that when you purchase certain items used to make homemade bombs, Amazon will recommend other products that help with that. That is an interesting claim to say the least.   2. Be careful of the Amazon “Recommended Products”. I’m seeing this on a few sites, not sure how true it is or not (urban myth?), but apparently Amazon is “Recommending” that their customers buy an adapter for an Airsoft Glock that supposedly is a full auto converter for a real Glock. And the BATFE-ces comes a-knocking at your door. YMMV

  4. Good article on the risks of an all electric automotive society. Given our pall mall push toward driverless cars, and the associated idea of ride sharing rather than car owning (i.e., we just rent the cars when we want to go somewhere and others use it when it would just be sitting–meaning higher and ongoing profits for the car owners) and the likelihood of those becoming mandatory at some point “for our own safety and for the general good” we need to be wary of that, too. If you don’t own the car and have it immediately at your disposal, it won’t be there when you need it most.

  5. Here in England after the London riots in 2011 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_England_riots It was on the news that baseball bat sales had gone up. So I looked it up on Amazon and it came up Customers who bought this item also bought balaclava/ski masks.
    At work I told someone about this who said “they buy baseball bats? Pickaxe handle are a lot cheaper”.
    About 25+ years ago I was looking at a sales list for a large sports shop, and me being me looked up baseball bat and sales of bats outnumbered baseball sales by four to one. You would think that people would buy a ball with the bat so they would have a reason for needing the bat [yes you do need that in the UK, it is that sad/bad].

    1. I like a cheap aluminum bat from a secondhand store. No reason to buy the Cold Steel plastic bats since a) they’re $40, b) aluminum > plastic, and c) try explaining to a jury why you have a bat that’s only for hitting people. Even the regular aluminum ones online are $20 when you can have a pre-dented one from the Goodwill for $5 or less.

  7. Wasp spray will travel 20 feet so the looter doesn’t have to be right up next to you to feel the sting of your bat. Also, they would have to go to the hospital to have it removed out of the eyes. Keep it by your bed and spray anyone who decides to come visit you uninvited.
